  • Influencing has changed everything consumers thought they knew about advertising. Using the trust and loyalty they’ve built with their viewers, influencers oftentimes use the facade of not being paid to sell products. However, over the past few years, viewers have turned on social media creators who got rich at their expense. Deinfluencing, thought to be the anti-influencing and anti-consumerist movement, is ironically led by influencers and, ultimately, brands desperate to rebuild trust with their viewers. Whether it’s through influencing or deinfluencing, there is no doubt that people are being influenced to spend. But why is the pull so powerful? Ivana says she’s so influenced to spend that she is most likely addicted and asks, “What would I do all day if I didn’t shop?” Then, Sara, an influencer and confessed overspender who has experience working with brands, admits that sometimes she felt she wasn’t able to be honest about products in the past. Next, hear what Alyssa, a marketing specialist whose deinfluencing posts went viral, says is the difference between influencing and deinfluencing. Plus, Paige says says she’s a former overspender who was able to turn her finances around and now has a successful career as a spending coach. And finally, hear from Brendan Gahan, partner and Chief Innovation Officer at Mekanism, a creative agency that specializes in the development and production of marketing campaigns, commercials, and branded entertainment, and what he says about being a brand in today’s world. I grew up extremely poor and I still have a shopping addiction. I went most of my life not being able to beautify myself or my home so now I do it unapologetically. There’s are multiple different types of shopping addictions and why people do it.

Have a brother in law who watches QVC ALL THE TIME and buys stuff, then asks for help to get car repaired or food.

I think some of this has to do with age. I’m 35 in June. I don’t follow influencers. I also studied fashion and marketing. Worked in luxury fashion for years as a specialist and manager (Gucci, Burberry, Agent Provocateur) I find influencers over saturate the market and almost make me want it less. Other people don’t make me want something. If I like it, I buy it. Seems more, and I could be wrong, wanting to fit in, insecurity and validation. It also seems to be a lot of cheaper fast fashion. It also shows a lack of personal identity/ style if you just want it because someone has it but you wouldn’t necessarily choose it if not for the person posting it.

I know i will always be a shopping addict but i haven't bought anything useless for almost 60 days. I learned what triggers me and that shopping doesn't make me happy. I saw the full episode and the girl said: "People that are not shopping must feel miserable." No honey, WE are miserable.

Yes I have spent over 100k too on shopping. Since I was a child my parents spoiled me rotten, then I had men who will send me thousands of dollars, just because they like me most times and because they fancy me being very educated, I shop second hand designers, then I sell some of the stuff, then I give out the ones I don’t sell. I only keep the ones I’m very attached to. My shopping triggers sometimes is because I’m upset, nervous or just very happy- anything can trigger it. I don’t like people touching the items I’m very attached to though.

I just finished the meditation book called "30 Days to Stop Being a Shopaholic" by Harper Daniels and it helped to calm my thoughts before shopping. I learned my attachments to clothes were very anxiety attached.

i dont really like dr phils approach here . he sux. and i call bs on her motivation being FOMO. but he is right about it being an avoidance tactic. there is some aspect of her life that she feels powerless to change, and thats where shopping comes in.
