  • On this episode of R&T's Three Lap Reviews, Travis Okulski and Sam Smith take the 2018 Cadillac CTS V-Sport out at Lime Rock Park and discover this American sedan is more of a 5-Series than any 5-Series BMW has built in years. It's also damn good at drifting.

    I own one of these and everything they said is true. It’s a great performance car but also can be docile around town, plus it looks spectacular even to this day. Mine is a 15 and stands out at the market parking lot. Best 30k value you can get…nothing performs close.

    They are wrong in this video about the engine being related to the ubiquitous GM 3.6 used in cars like the Malibu. The same displacement is about the only thing the engine in this car has in common with rank file permutations of that block. The engine in this car has been reengineered from the block on up. It shows, too. It pulls like like a V8 and you would never know it was turobcharged. He is right that it is absolutely the right engine for that car. While, I do like a V8 like anybody else, it's simply out of place in cars of this size. I've been in M5s and CTS Vs and, to me, those cars feel like project cars... like somebody said, "Hey, let's drop an old 350 in this little car and see what happens!" The VSport is an incredibly engineered car.

    • @aluisious
      @aluisious 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You do know its turbod but only in a good way. I have never been in any car that pulls uphill on the highway in top gear under 2krpm like this. Even a v8 will shift down. The crazy ass torque right off the bottom is astonishing too. You'd have to spin up a mustang or a Corvette a little but the twin turbo v6 is smoking tires off idle.

    No one buys them because they like their brand, they are brand snobs. Yet they have to get rid of them in 3 years because they fall apart. How do I know, because I worked at both BMW and Mercedes for fours years a piece. I saw cars coming in with around 20-30,000 kms and you would think they had 150,000 by the amount of trouble they had with them.
    Head gaskets at 10,000kms, rear end issues, transmission problems, leaks inside, paint issues etc. Thank god they had warranty. What I laugh at is the people who say "they hold value better" that is true to an extent. They hold better value in the first 3 years but when you have to trade and get one with warranty because it might fall apart, your value doesn't equal what you have remaining. That goes most every brand I know but other brands will last to the point of equal or great trade value.
    Beautiful cars but I wouldn't waste my money. Not sure what Audi is like but the other two brands aren't the greatest. No matter how much people say they are.

      I hear this a lot but I love the interior of my car. I think the problem here is a) I see the VSports in the media that have the RED interior. A red interior never looks good except 50s era 'vettes. b) they usually use the non-premium version with the analog gauges which are admittedly pretty low end looking. Also they don't come with the full leather package like mine. The horn on my steering wheel is leather for God's sake! My dashboard is leather! So much leather!!! You don't get that in the German cars for under six figures. c) some people don't like piano black but you know what, a LOT of manufacturers are moving towards it. Like Audi, Bentley, ... It looks so great and Cadillac was at the forefront. d) this is nearly the same interior as the Escalade which NOBODY complains about (except for the column shifter (which is crazy)).

    What people truly fail to realize the bargain they are getting. With a simple cold air intake, down pipes and a tune. They will have the same power as the V at the cost of a V-sport. Granted you won't have the sweet sound a that nasty LT4 but there are exhaust options for the Cadillac Vsport as well.

    • @difioreraviolishop7002
      @difioreraviolishop7002 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      As a vsport owner I can tell you you'll never get v power out of a vsport. No one has even broken 500hp with one yet. There's next to no performance parts available for this car.

    • @transam2002ws6
      @transam2002ws6 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@difioreraviolishop7002 why not is it's the basis for the LF4. I'm sure if they did the same upgrades that have been done the the ats-v. The results would be close to the same. You saying a tune, down pipes and a cold air intake wouldn't net similar numbers. The LF3 is already making 420hp/430tq compared to the LF4 464hp/464tq. They aren't that far off from each other stock. So similar upgrade would have similar results. At the very least make 550hp at the crank.

    • @difioreraviolishop7002
      @difioreraviolishop7002 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@transam2002ws6 no one makes down pipes or an intake for the vsport. You can adapt atsv stuff to fit. 1 guy did and had a custom tune done to match. His gains weren't worth to effort and money. The vsport has a very free flowing exhaust and good intake stock so there isn't much to be gained. And also no one has ever gotten a stock vsport to dyno in at 420hp. They usually show around 385ish stock. While it is close the the lf4, that's still just a better motor. Trifecta the company that makes the best tune for this car will even tell you it's pointless to spend the money on intake and exhaust stuff. Gm milked pretty much every last bit of power out of the lf3 they could. The tune gets you the last bit. The other issue is the lf3 turbos are weaker than the lf4. Can only get so much out of them. Plus our fuel delivery system can't handle a whole lot more than what it does. It'll starve for fuel. I'm eventually going to try and break the 500hp mark with a meth injection, also something never been done on this. I figure that with a proper tune should get me there. The highest rating I've seen on forums was 460ish.

Start small, it's not about buying a 200k home right away, start at 50-100k and go from there. If your pay is decent and credit is ok you can definitely qualify for a home loan on something smaller. As much as I want a CTS-V it would be the one of the dumbest purchases to make without having additional income first... I deluded myself into thinking I was open minded and went to look at BMWs and Mercedes before I bought my car but I found all kinds of reasons not to buy one. I would never buy one of those cars. I'd always find something wrong with them. That's the way it is with people against Cadillacs. The reasons they come up with now are crazy. Things like, "If they're so great, why isn't anybody buying them" or the "fit and finish isn't up to Germans" from people who don't even know what that means! Now, I will say you might be onto something regarding the exterior styling of this car . From certain angles it looks like the coolest car on the road and from others, it's awkward at best.

      Funny how Caddy's CUE gets criticized for having a touch screen when Tesla doesn't...

    What I find interesting about ANY review is that they all sound the same no matter who does the review. When I buy a car, I look at the whole package not just all out performance. I am well endowed, so getting to the next light first is unimportant. I already have a fast German car but I wanted to look at a Corvette. Great performance at a great price. But the interior quality and the Batmobile looks (personal choice) turned me off, so I bought a Porsche GTS. Hell, I didn't want to be the richest man in the cemetery. As for an everyday driver, I have a luxury Japanese car. Dead reliable and I keep them well over 10 years. Sorry Cardiac!

    I hear that this V6 is only good for 120k miles and then its shot! That is.. If you take good care of it it will last 120k or so.

      Not true at all. In the v-sport forums there are a ton of tuned v-sports well over 100k and some in the 150k who regularly track these cars and no issues at all. These cars are overbuilt and made to take abuse. I personally only have 50k on my tuned v-sport and I beat the crap out of the car daily and its still consistently drops 12.3 quarter mile runs the same as 48000 miles ago with no cylinder pressure drop and consistent oil analyses done.

    the reason people don't buy it is because Cadillac is crap.....one of the highest cost to own brands there is. Get a Lexus

      Jack Class no thanks, Lexus is boring. Whats crappy about Cadillac? I think they look awesome, offer good performance, cost a fraction of its European competitors and way more reliable than its european competitors. Pretty nice id say.

      Lexus are grandma cars, with the exception of the GSF, and that thing is damn near $100k.
