A truly bizarre film. So happy to see Lizabeth Scott, one of my favorite Film Noir actresses. She was 50 when this film was made in 1972, 23 years after she made one her best movies "Too Late For Tears'.
Wow, an unknown gem. Caine is perfection with the dialog; typical dry, English wit, understated, and brilliant. The "Alice in Wonderland" references are essential.
Mr Caine...."the Guv'nor & legend. And then the guy who looks like Bogart standing next to a bird and, when asks what it is and the guy says "Maltese Falcon",.....Priceless!
I have to visit Malta. A scene from this film got stuck in my mind for almost 50 years. Since then, I've been looking for it and suddenly it just showed up here. The scene was the one with and old man and a Coca-Cola bottle. Thanks for sharing.
This is a unique film; a bit of a spoof on the classic detective story. It also satarizes Hollywood with insider hands; sort of breaking the 4th wall a bit. Michael Caine is great as always. And all the acting is spot on. This makes for a very interesting and entertaining movie. 😅
mickey rooney doing a funny kind of disco flavoured boxing gyration in front of his narcissist wardrobe of mirrors is a great moment of comedy, all the while caine is marvellously understated... and nadia cassini's legs are to die for! -what a great little movie from a great year of cinema 1972.
that part was incredible. I have a lot of respect for him, and showing himself like that. He is before my time, but wow, the energy he has is unbelievable. This guy... without seeing any of his other movies, I realized (with him alone)... that there MUST NOT be actors or actresses like this anymore. It was a different time, lack of tech and access to tv/movies helped perpetuate that Golden era.
I felt so bad for the couple that Preston "ribbed." He's one of those guys where, everyone just fears you... and there's not a single, honest person around him (IF they were honest, theyd prolly be dead shot :D) Thanks again for posting, I LOVE this film and have been routinely playing daily.
I had to check who this actor reciting "Alice in Wanderland" lines was. He is Dennis Price, stage and film English actor. He was in "A Canterbury Tale" (1944 - a film by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger). These filmemakers produced together a few masterpieces such as "A Matter of Life and Death", "Black Narcissus", "The Red Shoes", "The Small Back Room", "Gone to Earth", "I Know Where I am Going". Just naming the ones I saw. If you are a cinephile it's really worth watching.
20:02 Sollozzo made it out alive in spite of the head shot from Michael Corleone... Dead in a bathtub allegedly, but made it out again. Love the sarcasm and cynicism in the script and cadence of the cinematography...
Distant memories of Malta roads are rough as wild boar's ass. Bus drivers travelling at break neck speed. Ancient ruins are older than the pyramids of Egypt. The carriage rides around the capital of Valletta. It only takes an hour forty five by boat, to reach the island of Sicily where the Mafia began. I've always liked films with Michael Caine (now 90). I particularly liked the hectic key clanking enthusiasm of the audio typing pool.
Cheeky stuff with lots of little jokes throughout. Must've influenced the Monty Python troupe. "What kind of bird is that?" "It's a Maltese falcon." It's no coincidence the actor looks like Peter Lorre. Or the American cop resembling Bogart.
"And the struggling Nigerian author, S. Odomy." If you're wondering how to take this film, imagine your friends made something and surprised you with it. So, relax.
Strange film, appreciate the ALICE IN WONDERLAND references and it's a nice surprise to see Dennis Price getting a better role than what he had to work with in some of his later movies.

It's Sunday morning in New York. Last night put's me in mind of a traditional English Fry up. If I recall. Bacon and sausage fried up. In the rendered fat, several eggs and sliced red tomatoes fried up. Thick slices of white bread toasted(?) and slathered with butter. All washed down with black tea, mixed with milk and granulated sugar.

@@grindupBaker so, it wasn't the typewriter we all think about when talking about a typewriter. They were good as one could type outside, not needing electricity supply, I agree on this aspect. Your electric one was amazing I'm sure but nowadays, there's no point having them as the computers are superior in every way. Printing afterwards saves a lot of paper as we can preview the layout, let someone read it before we print out the hard copy. I can't see a single advantage of having an electric typewriter whatsoever. One probably can install all sorts of devices on them to make it possible to save text etc, but that will turn them into computers. I've seen a guy at a train station, with a huge, very old typewriter, typing some text and atrracting quite a lot of attention. I was wondering if the typewriter had a string case to wheel it around as these old machines were so heavy. I had exactly the same model, that's why I know how heavy it is. 🙂
GEM, Thanks for providing this movie-Michael Caine good as always. However the footage at the end of the wild boar being hunted by dogs was unnecessary and quite upsetting!
1:18:31 No need to pretend that guy's missing an arm, especially since it's painfully obvious he still has it, and it has nothing to do with the plot, or the character. Why showcase such a failing of the industry?
