I like this series, it’s a car that’s not beyond reach of a lot of people and you’re keeping it real. Other TH-camr’s you can’t knock for where they started and have ended up, but fixing interesting performance cars for normal people is where it’s at 🙌
Check the fusebox under the bonnet for water. The engine ECU lives in there and it's really common for the ECU to have a little swim. The drains block in the bottom 👍
I can guarantee that valve cover is gonna leak again. You should have used drei bond and put it in the groove where the gasket sits in the valve cover. Also you should have put a drop of drei bond where the vanos cover and the heads meet and lastly while you were in there you should have changed the plastic vanos covers with slon covers. Also I believe the torque for the bolts is 6nm not 10nm
Yea you need to clean the inner surface of the cover where the gasket seats or it will leak best to power coated them or the NRW valve covers second if you don’t use sealant where the vanos cover meets the cylinder Head the gasket will also leak.
On the indicator stalk look up how to read the code on the car, scroll up to "check" then keep the button pressed and itll gove you a ccid code that you can then look up
not sure if it was misfiring before or not, if it wasn't check the new plug gaps as anyone could drop them along the way before gets to you. if ur sure everything i back together properly. if no communication at obd port check power is going to pin 16. you can back probe it and provide power straight into the line the the right power probe alternatively check if the obd has a fuse.
Seems silly but it's happened to me twice on 2 different e92 335is with no connection to the ECU and same symptoms as you it may or may not be a similar ECU and have the same common faults but when they sit the ECU for some reason does this and then won't read through the obd. I've found a free fix which worked both times for me is to unplug the ECU and disconnect the battery then leave it unplugged for a day or 2 I believe so that the capacitors on the board discharge then plug back in and should be fine. It seems so silly but it's happened to me twice on 2 cars so I wouldn't say it's a coincidence and I know other people who have done the same and worked aswell. I hope it works!
Spark plug gap👀 I bought Oem plugs and they weren’t gapped properly, 2 of them had been dropped(assuming) and closed the gap the slightest bit, I regapped them and it was sweet! :)
This may seem like a stretch but check the fuses. Im a car flipper and there has been several times i couldnt communicate with an ecu just to find it was a blown fuse. Replaced each time and no problems afterwards. I guess i could call myself lucky
That was a slow pour Chris! The stability light, my mates old man had an e46 and had an encounter with a narsty pothole, can't remember if it threw the tracking out but.... it switched everything off and popped a warning up on the screen to tell you, ziss is dangerous, avoid driving and take to BMW IMMEDIATELY! It left mass 11's all over the road and ended up facing the wrong way a good chunk of the time.
Does the battery have enough power in it. My scanners couldn’t connect to my BMW 100%, when the battery voltage was low, but it still allowed me to start the car. I hope I make sense.
Are the rocker cover bolts single use? The early N52 with the magnesium cover has single use bolts so should be changed after they’ve been torqued up. Might explain why that one snapped. The later N52 engines with the plastic covers (and others like the N54 etc) had rocker cover bolts that could be reused.
Can't think of any reason why you can't read the code for the MIL light to be on. Just check the car carefully, even when the gas-cap is not correctly closing it will trigger the MIL light. But then, any OBD reader should present the code to you. Without a code it will be hard. Have a good look at the coils, they must be seated all the way in, otherwise a misfire can occur.
Most of that oil leak looks like it was coming from the oil cap (very common) Also did you check the condition of the vanos covers? They can be brittle and break, if it gets into the oil system it can damage the engine.
throttle actuator need replacing as common issues with these bmw. They fail after 40,000 miles. Or manifold throttle actuator control system stuck open
I might be wrong but when you filled the car with fuel was there a red plug in the end of the filler neck or is that the filler? Might be in the fuel tank now 😬 hopefully not
Hey Chris, loving the channel!! what cameras are you using? I'm currently rebuilding a murcielaego and keep saying I'm gonna document some of it but only have crappy iPhone vids

Completly agree with this. Supercars are nice but unobtainable for most people. These sorts of cars are much more interesting.
Agreed
Agreed. 👊🏻
Agreed
Absolutely

Ethan seems like a helpful person. Really lucky to have him around
Hes a proper legend 😅
@6:30 The rocker covers are actually made of magnesium, not plastic.
M539 restoration just done a M3 engine rebuild. Streten is the ultimate guide
Great work Chris, my E92 M3 had a few misfire/limp mode issues that turned out to be the coil packs, may be worth a check. Dan

The rocker covers are magnesium and very expensive. Can also go porous over time.
Yea you need to clean the inner surface of the cover where the gasket seats or it will leak best to power coated them or the NRW valve covers second if you don’t use sealant where the vanos cover meets the cylinder Head the gasket will also leak.

When these get remapped some mappers block the ECU.
I came across it a lot with Evolve and the E46 M3
What a car, what a build
This man is hard working!! Can't wait for you to hit 200k subs🔥
Hi Chris, I had same issue on mine and it was the throttle body actuators! It’s normally either the cogs or the electrical panel.
not sure if it was misfiring before or not, if it wasn't check the new plug gaps as anyone could drop them along the way before gets to you. if ur sure everything i back together properly. if no communication at obd port check power is going to pin 16. you can back probe it and provide power straight into the line the the right power probe alternatively check if the obd has a fuse.

Thanks for cool music on vid. I felt videos was a bit robotic but this one is more lively with music. Thanks
The music during the ice blasting was great!!
For low torque specs I tend to use a better torque wrench like a digital one as it's easier to hear it
Great video mate, dont forget to check the Rod bearings aswell so your engine doesent blow! It seens to be a common problem on these cars! 🔥👊
The UK and Ireland are the only countries that know what a jubilee clip is, the rest of the world call them hose clips
love the videos
In Germany we call the jubilee or hose..in Austria too and I've lived and worked in Aus on cars and it's jubillee too...
Spark plug gap👀 I bought Oem plugs and they weren’t gapped properly, 2 of them had been dropped(assuming) and closed the gap the slightest bit, I regapped them and it was sweet! :)
Loving the Linking Park music at the start Chris! 👌🏻
This may seem like a stretch but check the fuses. Im a car flipper and there has been several times i couldnt communicate with an ecu just to find it was a blown fuse. Replaced each time and no problems afterwards. I guess i could call myself lucky
Hello, nice job, I would check the intake manifold that you removed because the gasket could have collapsed and the left one is getting air
Your whining noise is the power steering pump. Low on hydraulic fluid. Refill and done.
starting the video with linkin park is just 😍
another interesting build, looking forward to seeing the niggles get ironed out and the bodywork sorted. will be a lovely car when done.
Them rocker covers are prone to warping and usually the gasket is good it lifts in the middle. You might have to replace them if they leak again. 🤞👍
Check the actuators
Would it not have been beneficial to change the thermostat whilst you had the plenum off? The thermostats are known to give problems.
Totally awesome simply love you and Matt Armstrong mate🎉brilliant Attention to detail.
You can use a length of hose like a stethoscope to locate noises throughout the engine compartment
That was a slow pour Chris!

“First run down the drive”.. lol😂 Also known as a blast down the street past all the neighbours.
🤫 😂
Would have done throttle actuators both banks and rod bearings aswell just as peace of mind even with the service history
Thanks Mr slix that song is firmly stuck in my head. You are gold😂❤keep up the good work.
Probably a bad sensor. Might wanna change your crankshaft position sensor as preventative maintenance to see if that helps.
Spandau Ballet, absolute OG's
Valve covers are made of magnesium or sum like that and their inside with years and mileage start to fall apart and drop stuff to the engine.
You are gold! Whole segment had me dying 😂 channels grown loads since i met you at highcross meet 🤟🏽 keep going man 💚

Also limp mode can be caused by a shortage with one of the cables at the engine
Most of that oil leak looks like it was coming from the oil cap (very common)
Also did you check the condition of the vanos covers?
They can be brittle and break, if it gets into the oil system it can damage the engine.
Just commenting to support the channel
Keep up the good work Chris!!!! Luvvin the work fella
Would suggest you change the engine mounts given the mileage they will be knackered!
Ideally you need inpa or inta d to read codes properly.
Try the replaceing throttle valve actuators ?? Or watch naz boost
It’s SLIX time !!!
Another cracking video.
Keep the content coming. 👍🏻
Liking purely for the ice blast montage, had me groovin’
Had same issue on mine it’s the abs sensor
I bet the issue was simply the ground at the back of the driver side valve cover. I've seen this issue happen before.
Car rebuild videos need more Spandau Ballet as their backing song. Quality 🙂
Rocker covers on these a renowned for becoming porus…..
The half engine light is limp mode. How do you not know that 😆
SB is the band
Another great vlog mate love a m3
Now this was the video i was waiting for 🙌
Did you gap the plugs before fitting? Could cause misfire.
Nice car and nice video 👌you should clean the inside of the air box , it was dirty , and it's more important to be clean than the outside
Well done fella!
Hi mate I had 3 of these and all had similar issue actuators! I Have the blokes number who sell them and we’re the cheapest around
15:38 I know, right?! 😂🕺🏾
Drop the year on the ecu reader almite help some times it's o. A year before then regard a year later
Gold…👍
Great job on the cleaning of the rocker covers, what chemical do you use?? 🤓
throttle actuator need replacing as common issues with these bmw.
They fail after 40,000 miles.
Or manifold throttle actuator control system stuck open
I had a real struggle trying to read a fault on my old 3 series. Turned out to be the fuel pump.
Get Carly I’m sure Matt Armstrong has one you can borrow!!
Been looking forward to this video love an e90
Need eventuri intake mate.. it will sound epic..
Check abs sensors. Pretty sure they can cause havoc on these
Will do, thanks 😊
Thought you were going to put in a carbon plenum from Eventuri
if you got carbon eventuri intake and plenum that's would dress the engine bay nice 👍 👌
Great soundtrack ❤
Now that song is stuck in my head 😂😂
ECU faults are pretty common on the e92!
INPA/ ISTA will be your best friend
I might be wrong but when you filled the car with fuel was there a red plug in the end of the filler neck or is that the filler? Might be in the fuel tank now 😬 hopefully not
Hey Chris, loving the channel!! what cameras are you using? I'm currently rebuilding a murcielaego and keep saying I'm gonna document some of it but only have crappy iPhone vids
Ignition coils mate
if I'm not mistaken, the rocker cover bolts are one time use?
Where did you get the new tensioner and pulleys? were these a genuine part? May need to do the same to mine
Reassembly of engineroom without fixing the broken rocker cover bolt?!
You again 😂
He said he unscrewed it from the bottom?
@@TBATTIECYCLING again?
Are you doing the rod bearings?
I wish the rocker covers were plastic 😂😂 they cost a bomb when the coating goes porous 😢
Great work mate ❤ what about jaguar. Where is it
I still don't understand how you can brake a bolt with a torque of 10 NM!?
You should off changed the shellbearings when you went that far its a common fault
🇿🇦🇿🇦 Watching from South Africa 🇿🇦🇿🇦
So the obd2 reader you’re advertising isn’t the best apparently?
Must ask Chris, finding the shite state of those air and cabin filters, are you really confident of the service history? 🤔🤔
Nope 😂 but all i can do is treat it as best i can. Cant turn back time 😅
Engine management light is part of the M package. Only Bmw owners can afford it 😂😂😂
Boootoooom of the bowwwtle
Wont be long before hes fixing ferraris good luck fella
Whats happening with the x3 bud 😢
Never thought I'd hear 'Session' by Linkin Park on this 😂
