Wildfire oh he was.. oft regarded as one of the best who didn't win a GP... kept Schumi more than honest in the Benetton. In Le Mans cars.. world champion and well nigh unbeatable sometimes.
Martin himself explained it - he was close, but not close enough (in F1). And he did have the chances by racing with top teams, but always falling a bit short. Great guy and sports car racer either way.
This is sheer gold. Honest, forthright and insightful as he always is. Brundle is one of the best communicators in F1 - he has added so much to my understanding of the sport through many years of commentary and he brings more than just experience of the sharp end of F1, he is intelligent and articulate enough to explain it to the public. For his sake I regret that he never won the F1 world championship, but for the rest of us I'm so glad he didn't as he would no doubt have not needed to enter the world of TV commentary had he been world champion.
Martin Brundle makes F1 for me, his commentary is brilliant. I love his approach and his opinions are always about right. I think Martin, Ted Kravitz & David Croft are the F1 broadcasters I respect the most. Don't ever retire Martin !
I think he’s been the perfect transition between Murray and Crofty. He’s bridged the gap between two very distinct eras of F1. I remember Murray’s unbridled emotion, enthusiasm, and unadulterated love of F1 when I listened as a child. My father is from the “age of Murray”. My dad, like most guys of his generation, are very set in their ways. I think we both now enjoy the commentary team now due to Martin bridging that gen gap seamlessly. And he’s brutally honest and to the point- qualities that are quite scant as of late.
A quick racer whose weakness was qualifying, much better than the F1 stats suggest and deserved another 2-3 seasons on the grid. Best driver expert commentator since James Hunt.
Martin Brundle, one of the many reasons i thoroughly enjoy watching every single piece of F1 Content during a weekend. The guy is full of wisdom and you can quite clearly tell, racing is his blood. Not in it.
Fascinating interview, Also I know Murray was a great commentator, one of the best , but it just isn't a grand prix without brundle commentating now days , his view is always spot on and he sees things that the person watching home misses..he's insight and knowledge is unquestionably in a sport which can be very complicated at times...great podcast guys!!
Engaging interview. But why is everyone upset if Brundle is biased or not. You are all biased. I am biased. Everyone has biases. It's called having an opinion and a point of view. Some opinions are worth more than others because of life and professional experience but as a human being we will have opinions. If anyone is upset because of an opinion then that's on the person who is upset, not on the person who has an opinion. Plus Brundle is a commentator not a journalist. If he was a journalist then yes he would be bound by professional ethics to stifle his opinions, as a commentator he has the privilege of being able to state his opinion... Which is just that, an opinion, nothing more and therefore can be accepted or discarded by the viewer and should not cause upset. People take things way too personally and actually believe that opinions are connected to identity and as such defend them to the death. Both are ultimately unreal, so relax and have fun. It's sports, not politics you'll live to see another day.
I don'y understand people complaining about the background noise. It transports us there with them rather than just having isolated voices in a clinical studio. For me the ambience adds to the experience of the podcast.
It's true .. Martin's commentary is what got me hooked to F1 .. he "forced" us to look differently at what was going on. Spot things like how a driver handles the wheel .. what the engine sounds like in this or that corner (obviously harder nowadays with silly halo & engine noise) .. Showed me that the "car+driver ... image" (if you like) isn't as "static" going round the tracks as one might imagine at first. There's loads of feedback one can get from just looking on TV. How comfortable is that fast guy actually in his car, or is he working his a** off for every tenth in every corner ? Stuff like that. Awesome ! I'm forced to watch on french telly nowadays .. and altho they are doing a descent job .. I miss Martin every single race.
Raced with Senna in F3, raced in the same team as Schumacher in '92 in a solid Benetton and got pally with Murray on the talktalk from '97 - he's one of the best racers that didn't win a race! He understood the race craft...he wasn't given the right car to win that race or maybe races - or maybe too gentlemanly to take the equipment to the the edge!
one of the best of this podcast (others i just finished are fittipaldi, alain prost, and jo rimarez) no BS, real history, in-depth knowledge, and genuine emotions! wish today's f1 still had such authenticity (as PR scrubbed PC machine!)
Martin has all my respect. Watched since 97 so his Grid Walk has always been a highlight even it was a MSC or HAM/MERC dominant borefest race. Never give up MB. Legend.
Beast of a driver in sportscar racing just watch the way he hustles the Jaguars back in the Group C and IMSA days. Matched up well against Schumacher as well. An underrated driver in my eyes.
What is up with all the dislikes? I mean, I haven't watched it yet, but it has just been posted so nobody did. I mean, I know Martin can be a little biased while commenting on Sky Sports, but damn, nobody forces you to listen to his podcast. And even if you think he is biased I think it should be worth listening to, as he's been around F1 for many many years, he probably has many stories and anecdotes to tell. I definitely don't mind this type of guests. If you want just the current drivers, Beyond the Grid would end just in 5 months considering that they post one podcast per week and there is only 20 drivers.
some might have disliked because of the annoying background noise... i find myself not complaining about it that much... but in this one it is very very distracting
You know i saw this pop up and was disappointed because i feel like i know everything about Martin. But he's just so fascinating to listen to and plenty of new things were talked about. Great interview as always.
Some very interesting insights and surprisingly open about his flaws as a driver - I never knew about him almost losing a foot, let alone it hampering him throughout his career thereafter.
Heh. I remember my father watching F1 back in the day and him being a fan of Zakspeed as a german team. is it funny that both Martin Brundle and Christian Danner are now some iconic TV commentators?
I had the chance to see Martin`s very first F1 GP. 1984 Brazilian GP at the old Jacarepaguá track in Rio de Janeiro, my home town. He finished 5th driving a Tyrrel car. Later he was disqualified. Martin was a goog driver and is a very good F1 comentator. All the best for him.
What a great man. A down to earth guy who is not full of his own self importance. Marry that with his experience and knowledge of F1 and it's no wonder he commands the respect of those in the paddock and television viewers around the world. F1 is very much better for his contribution.
Lot of respect for Martin and enjoying this series. But gosh, at the least TC could have at least organised a quiet room to avoid all the background noise.
This man is a F1 legend. He has had many challenges over his lifetime and he will continue to be one of the best in term of his driving experience and how it shaped his commentary. Yes his experience makes him biased in certain aspects but ALL the experienced drivers respect him and that is a rarity nowadays. We have to remember that most of technicians, team bosses and race engineers know what he has done. His knowledge is a gift to others. His races against Schumacher and Senna were spectacular. Let's not forget it. Sky Sports keep him with his continuous wealth of knowledge and expertise. He's British like me so yes, Sky Sports will ALWAYS be biased on British drivers. This is the same with all TV companies with drivers from their own country. This will never change as it's pride. Great to hear about his driving career. Cannot wait for the next Beyond the Grid.
Brundle is a decent man... I respect his insight knowledge and technicality. Just wishing he could be more respectful and not too biased. He just have a bit too much ego and seems couldn't let go some of his bitternes. Coulthard is more open and can admitted when he made mistakes or not up to some of his ex-rival. He can let go of his past, and i respect Coulthard more for that. It's too bad that Coulthard couldn't sound more clearly when he speak, so a bit difficult to understand his words. I think Jonathan Palmer is the best... He praised the british driver if they make a good job and worthy of a praise. But at the same time dont back off to critisize them and not seeing them in rose tinted when they made a (silly) mistake, such when Hill ram into the back of Schumacher on Monza '95 or spun at Nurbugring and Suzuka. But maybe for that reason that Jonathan Palmer didn't get the invitation on ITV. James Allen is the worst... Constantly screaming like a hysterical cheerleader, then relied and comment on gossip and bombastic view... He even has the gut to ridicule and bashing driver while he himself was not an ex F1 racer.
Lots of people saying he's biased, well I'm sure if you listened to German TV they would be too for Vettel, or Finland for kimi. Everyone knows Hamilton is the best driver and as always gets the most hate I.e. Schumacher and senna. He's won the Last ten rain affected races, and if you can't recognise that talent you're either a liar or an idiot.
What an exceptinoal driver. I have a video of him racing at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. He was driving an Austin A35. He was going around everything, even cars twice the size. You can see his sportscar chops there.
I saw Brundle race in the British GP at Brands in 84. It was often said back then that Chris Amon was the best guy never to win a gp. In my subjective opinion Brundle became that guy when he retired. He is certainly the best commentator never to win a gp.
You’re an amazing man Martin, how many F1 cars have you actually driven altogether, I think it would be the most of anyone. On top of that, you’ve still got some amazing speed.
Sure when Martin was in F1 he was in a rain-affected race in which marshals and a car-moving truck were on track. Martin spun out, injured a marshal, and nearly hit the truck. In many rain-affected races subsequently when he was commentating he stated he felt removing cars from the track with those big yellow trucks with marshals also vulnerable would result in the death of a track worker or a driver. Tragically he was proven correct.
For all english speaking fans of F1 saying Martin Brundle is biased. I exchange him for Villeneuve as commentator everyday! I actually watch F1 in english now because comments are far better than in French since the broadcast went private and the historical commentators are not doing F1 anymore. So please don't be too angry to Martin Brundle.
Junior Cyclist yeah. The Dislikes show not the whole truth. I actually like him very much. He is a very smart Guy, and actually quite funny. And every Commentator is biased towards his own Country, so calling him out for that is wrong in my opinion.
Because they perceive he's biased against certain teams. I've been listening to him commentate for years and have never picked up any real bias. In addition there are a load of armchair fans who think they know more than his despite his extensive experience actually racing the cars.
One of the greats of Motorsport. Martin was unlucky considering his F1 career. Mostly driving for unreliable teams or great teams that just werent at their peak when Brundle drove for them. His best chance came with Benetton in 1992 scoring 6 podiums. Sadly he was dropped the following season. Even though he doesnt admit it he was way less capable than the champions of this era, but he deserved a cool car and a team believing in him. In any case he is a legend for driving and testing so many f1 cars from past decades.
Brundle isnt a fan of Hamilton at all, but as most brits are he is very pro brittish, or however you wanna call it. And theres nothing wrong with that even as proffesional commentator. Sky probably forces him to praise Hamilton into the heavens, (wich it typical Sky style) as it was very Obvious during the Coulthard/Brundle commentary days on BBC that he wasnt charmed of Lewis in any form or shape and openly spoke about it. 2nd best commentator after Murray walker, and the absolute best of gridwalks and roasting Bernie Ecclestone and being respected for it. Sky have censored the aboslute savage Brundle could be if he'd let his mind speak. So ye, thats Sky for ya
I’ve always thought Martin had a slightly envious tone when he talked about Schumacher and now it makes more sense. He does give off that he thinks he should have been a big-shot in F1 .. I like Martin but not sure about how highly he rates himself against the all time greats
He thinks he was worse than the greats but was much closer to Schumacher driving wise than Patrese. Just like Herbert was much more a number 2 driver whilst Max's dad was more a number 3.
These interviews are gold for us fans but can you please use decent microphones and perhaps a sound isolated room to really get the best production values possible? Heavens, extended interviews with the f1 elite and it sounds like it is in a cafeteria. I am sure you can do it considering what the team buildings look like in the paddock. Pretty please?
32:00 Strangely, top speeds don't really reflect relentless acceleration. And that's starting each straight pretty much the fastest ever. Drag is tredmendous. 1000hp to go 320kph, and have no acceleration left.
I would have loved to see Martin in that 97 Jordan as it really was a handy car! His vast experience would definitely have put him on the podium a few times that year Even dare I say it, a win?
See, videos like this would be infinitely better if TH-cam let me play them in the background with the app. Instead of closing it while I use my phone for other shit, god damn it!
Clarkson wakes his wife up at 2am, “let me tell you a little bit about BOSE.”
Got a lot of respect for Martin. Another real racer who perhaps didn't get the chances he deserved.
Phil Porter 😎
He also wasn't that great as a driver... Not an upper echeleon guy.
But that's fine because as a commentator he's unrivalled and the voice of F1!
I respect him too but I remember him in the 90s and let's be honest he wasn't very good
This is sheer gold. Honest, forthright and insightful as he always is. Shalan Sharma Yes! He deserves a win
that's enough to comfortably push along a family saloon
Totally agree, thanks.
Been listening to Brundle since 1998 and he is a great commentator
i beat you, ive been listening since 97
Legendary Commentator.
Martin Brundle makes F1 for me, his commentary is brilliant. I love his approach and his opinions are always about right. I think Martin, Ted Kravitz & David Croft are the F1 broadcasters I respect the most. Don't ever retire Martin !
Tim D finally someone with a brain!
Croft is horrible, I agree with the rest of your comment.
Agreed, hope none of them leave Sky.
Martin’s Grid Walk is a part of the weekend in some ways. He’s been incredible with his analysis and commentary over the years
Love Martin's honesty. Hope one day F1 management might listen to him as he represents a large number of the fan base.
I think he’s been the perfect transition between Murray and Crofty. He’s bridged the gap between two very distinct eras of F1. I remember Murray’s unbridled emotion, enthusiasm, and unadulterated love of F1 when I listened as a child. My father is from the “age of Murray”. And he’s brutally honest and to the point- qualities that are quite scant as of late.
Mr. Brundle is one of the best reporters of Formula One. Always a pleasure to watch him.
Good stuff. Bundle is easily the best part of the Sky commentary team and I’ve enjoyed listening to him for many years now. Thanks Martin.
A quick racer whose weakness was qualifying, much better than the F1 stats suggest and deserved another 2-3 seasons on the grid. Best driver expert commentator since James Hunt.
He's not just a commentator let's not forget in formula 3 he took the championship battle to Ayrton senna
Yeah could of been champion in f1 if he didn't snap his leg.
Aidan Keogh that was Johnny Herbert wasn’t it
Both really, Dallas 1984 was when Brundle was injured.
He couldn't left foot brake.
AnonymousRealist Johnny Herbert did smash himself up too I mean he once called himself "the fastest cripple in the world"
Lots of respect for this man. Just love listening to him. Very eloquent and descriptive.
R9 I’m Australian and couldn’t give a rats arse if he’s biased towards the poms. My point was, he’s a great commentator.
Love Brundle. Amazing insight into the world of F1. Good driver too
Grew up with Martin and Murray. Martin is good at what he does. Hopefully he continues for many more years 👍
"You're right there, Murray"
Inspirational, but especially insightful interview. Glad I listened
Martin was at his best as commentator with Murray.
Martin Brundle, one of the many reasons i thoroughly enjoy watching every single piece of F1 Content during a weekend. The guy is full of wisdom and you can quite clearly tell, racing is his blood. Not in it.
A real honest, modest & humble bloke is Martin.
Fascinating interview, Also I know Murray was a great commentator, one of the best , but it just isn't a grand prix without brundle commentating now days , his view is always spot on and he sees things that the person watching home misses..he's insight and knowledge is unquestionably in a sport which can be very complicated at times...great podcast guys!!

one of the best of this podcast (others i just finished are fittipaldi, alain prost, and jo rimarez) no BS, real history, in-depth knowledge, and genuine emotions! wish today's f1 still had such authenticity (as PR scrubbed PC machine!)
Really enjoying these podcasts and the personal background context they give to the sport. Thanks for putting them together Tom.
Schumacher was a rookie at the time and he still beat him.

people are complaining(suprise for F1 fans) about background noise, which I actually really like as it sets the scene and provides an ambience.
Thanks for this discussion and so many of your listeners are big Brundle fans
Big fan of Brundle, His experience and knowledge comes through in his commentary and honestly him and Crofty raise the energy level in races.
I like to listen, especially when he’s describing the drivers going through the gears during racing.
An enjoyable listen. Followed Martin’s career for nearly 30 years.
Martin Brundle, the Legend without title
Keep them coming Tom !! Thank you, regards, Geoff from Merimbula Australia
My absolute favourite person in F1.
Heh. I remember my father watching F1 back in the day and him being a fan of Zakspeed as a german team. is it funny that both Martin Brundle and Christian Danner are now some iconic TV commentators?
I remember when he raced. Great commentator that I came to know only 3 years ago.
Makes Formula One so much more entertaining he's become priceless.
Brilliant interview. Thank you.
What a fantastic interview. Thank you.
What a great man. A down to earth guy who is not full of his own self importance. Marry that with his experience and knowledge of F1 and it's no wonder he commands the respect of those in the paddock and television viewers around the world. F1 is very much better for his contribution.
I would've loved to see Brundle in his banger racing days
I honestly still think that from around 1997 to 2006 Martin was THE BEST commentator across sports broadcasting in the UK.
Brundle's grace is one of the best things about F1.
If you can't recognise mercedes dominance you are a moron
Palmer could win in a mercedes you absolute twat
love to see martin and current f1 drivers compete in banger racing.
Good interview with some interesting insights, particularly on current cars Vs the older ones.
WE WANT KIMI
how long would that episode be? 😂
No
Đình Dũng Vũ Hi Kimi and welcome. "Hi" "Thank you" "Goodbye". 😂
Bwaoh.............
With subtitles please.
What an exceptinoal driver. I have a video of him racing at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. He was driving an Austin A35. He was going around everything, even cars twice the size. You can see his sportscar chops there.
50 Minutes of listening to Martin😍
Don’t really understand why he blamed vettel for the incident with bottas
But he’s still a good commentator though
Henry whatzal Because vettel was more at fault than Valtteri in that case.
Are you deluded? Everyone (even Martin later on Twitter) said it was more on Valtteri.
This is the Martin we want to listen and loved to listen ,not the biased LH and anti Ferrari and Vettel on sky
Absolutely epic podcast. Thank you F1.
I saw Brundle race in the British GP at Brands in 84. It was often said back then that Chris Amon was the best guy never to win a gp. In my subjective opinion Brundle became that guy when he retired. He is certainly the best commentator never to win a gp.
Absolutely fantastic. Great insight thanks
Such a nice guy
My hero Martin Brundle G.O.A.T
You’re an amazing man Martin, how many F1 cars have you actually driven altogether, I think it would be the most of anyone. On top of that, you’ve still got some amazing speed.
The latest F1 car he drove was Mike Hawthorn's 1958 championship winning Ferrari
Thanks for all those race wins Martin!
Great interview, really enjoyed it. Thank for for posting. Just 1 question though. What do you mean by 'keep it flat out'?
Love your commentary Martin!!
Keep 'em coming
When is the interview with my hero Lance Stroll coming?
Magath 88 lol 🤣
Said no one ever 😆
Stroll is a cry baby.
Magath 88 never.
Magath 88 neverrrrrrrrrrrrr
Best of all the beyond the grids
Fisichella came into that Jordan seat in "97 and Kicked some A**!
We want Hakkinen, Fisichella, Barrichello, Massa, Coulthard, and a lot more!
I saw him and Cultard in car at Hungaroring they where nice to people not like some other f1 driver that just fly by fans
Jules would still be alive if F1 had listened to Martin. Sharp cat. Great racer.
Sure when Martin was in F1 he was in a rain-affected race in which marshals and a car-moving truck were on track. Martin spun out, injured a marshal, and nearly hit the truck. In many rain-affected races subsequently when he was commentating he stated he felt removing cars from the track with those big yellow trucks with marshals also vulnerable would result in the death of a track worker or a driver. halos wouldnt have saved jules, maybe kept him in a brain dead coma like micheal. maybe virtual safety car might have slowed his crash
concordare
John Wu I'm pretty sure Michael isn't in a coma anymore
Mr Random Guy How are you sure of anything when no one knows shit about his condition ?
The way he speaks and voice sounds like Seb☺☺
For all english speaking fans of F1 saying Martin Brundle is biased. I exchange him for Villeneuve as commentator everyday! I actually watch F1 in english now because comments are far better than in French since the broadcast went private and the historical commentators are not doing F1 anymore.
So please don't be too angry to Martin Brundle.
Great commentator
Watched him race and always enjoy his commentary (even though he is biast sometimes, but feel most sky commentaiters are)
Imagine how different things would’ve been for him if Professor Watkins hadn’t stopped them amputating his left foot.
I love how the F1 Community suddenly has a problem with being biased. 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
Great podcast!
Don’t hate on me cos I’m new to f1, why do people not like martin? Thanks
Junior Cyclist Most of the F1 fans like him.
Because this is the internet, everyone I’ve met thinks he’s one of the best around.
Just a great guy.
I like how he wants to add safety before going flat out.
Martin Brundle is the fucking boss.
One of the greats of Motorsport. Martin was unlucky considering his F1 career. Mostly driving for unreliable teams or great teams that just werent at their peak when Brundle drove for them. smart choice for early interviewee in this series f1, bravo
Actually most Brits hate Hamilton.
That’s just not true
Daniel Crawford hamilton has become annoying as hell since he adopted the diva like status ... love for all bs
Nice interview
Fantastic interview ruined by the interruption of adverts every minute or so. Shameful.
Love this guy
He always tries to slate schumacher, that is why schumacher blanked him out from time to time whilst a mercedes gp driver.
32:00
Strangely, top speeds don't really reflect relentless acceleration. And that's starting each straight pretty much the fastest ever.
Drag is tredmendous. 1000hp to go 320kph, and have no acceleration left.
They did just essentially put a massive snow plow wing on the back to try and deal with all the power
I reckon Martin would have been formidable in the right racing car regardless of who he was against
