I always soak them in saltwater to remove all the bugs, I then dip in egg and roll in flour before frying them in butter and salt and pepper to taste.
Cook them in fish fry and sunflower oil. Only way to eat them
@@FPS-tc9ns Only way to eat them you say, you'd do real well in the morel f.b. groups. Bunch of experts there talk just like you. They all know the only way to do things.
Same here that's a good process for eliminating any bugs.

I live in roaming shores Ohio it's like 30 mins from p.a. it's going to be a good year this year 2019 . 1st time hunter , cant wait til april.
When my Grandma was a little girl, she found a bunch and took off her bloomers, knotted the legs, and carried them home that way.
Usually gives them a strong seafood taste using that method.

I do not doubt that, you did whatever it took. Back then, those shrooms help tide them over through Spring, as food was often scarce. You didn’t leave it in the field or woods then. I have taken off my jacket and put them in it, he could’ve taken off his T-shirt and used it, tied the end together and make a tote of sorts. (He still had his coat to keep him covered). I always took extra bags after this happened to me once.
They got plenty and was satisfied, though.
I am originally from Sharon, PA, not far from you. I now live in New Mexico. The trees are different here and, so far this year, NO MOISTURE. So much fun watching you, and a vicarious thrill for me!!!!!!

John, I realize it’s 5yrs late but I used to hunt Morels in Ottumwa Iowa in the 70s. Delicious. I was working my Aunt’s farm and being from S Texas, didn’t know about ‘em but after I learned, watch out. Couldn’t get enough of them

Overall good video. Really satisfying to see you get the morels, and good advice on identifying the trees. Even if you're not too sensitive to poison ivy, you might want to point it out to your audience. I'm not really sensitive to it, but for people who don't know and turn out to be really allergic, it would be good advice. Also, definitely get yourself a mesh bag for the mushrooms.
Yeah, I cringed when I saw his wife in flip flops. I'm very sensitive to poison ivy.

Thank you, so helpful! East Central Indiana, have found only a few this year. We had one year with a bumper crop maybe 15 years ago with large morels everywhere. Once in a lifetime find, but it keeps us hopeful every year!

I would definitely like to see you show us more of the tree identifications, especially getting into details of how the leaves, stems, and flowers look like! I would also like to see you do videos on other mushrooms. Maybe focusing on how to find and identify Spring time mushrooms!

Suggestion.. We save net onion bags.. The idea being as we walk hunting mushrooms the spore can fall out. Thus sowing more spore for the future. Maybe right???? One thing I know is when we have had high water on the reservoir all spring, the next year there's lots along the high water mark. Theory being the spore floats and settled at edge of the high water last year. As a 75 year old man who's spent tons of time in the timber. You know your stuff and did excellent job getting it out. Ps ,,, mark your patches with GPS year to year... Again not a single dispute. Good job..... In this neck of woods it's grey elm and red elm. Tulip being yellow poplar. Cut timber several years. Graded lumber 20 yrs. River ash and ash. Some places call grey elm, rock elm. Really enjoyed your video... Camera lady good job too. Enjoy !!! Edit,,, ha I'm 2 states. west ,, Indiana...also dogwood trees bloom here at morel time.
I was taught by my father to mushroom hunt in Northern Michigan and we used onion bags. I was told that it is for the same reason...to spread the spores. I was also told to cut the stem at the ground, but leave the "roots" in the ground. The idea was that the root may re-grow later or next spring.
The one at 15:23 was Huge!!
I've heard wicker baskets work great for spreading spores too.
Onion sacks are too rough, tends to grind up shrooms- soft laundry bags (dyed green for sleuthy woods walking) are better
I would only harvest what I can eat before they go bad. Mushrooms do not freeze well. You could dry them and re-hydrate them later but it needs to be done carefully. Allow some to remain so that they can propagate for next season and many years to come. Keep the site secret and make sure you map it well so you can find it next year.

i must take this time to THANK YOU 10'000 times. i did know some about this but after watching this it all came clear to me!. i just got a new 20acr place from a person who was highly educated in environmental study's. just looking around to the trained eye you can see most of what he has done here and make sense of it.. BUT!!!!! i couldn't understand why the man left great big old dead ELM's along the lawn. they could easily take the house out?????? but i just left them alone thinking there must be a reason. LMAO!!! i was picking up trash along the road and WOW! i found 5lbs of morels and was a happy man. but after watching this video!!!!!! i walked around the lawn and O M G!! lets just say I LOVE MY NEW PLACE A BIT MORE NOW!! LOL. over half the dead trees have 2or3 lbs and i got over 20lbs of monsters at 2 of them. THANK YOU!!!!!

You should use a net bag so u spread the spores while your walking. I’ve seen mushroom spots dry up from using plastic bags.

I'd absolutely love a tree identification video because i really don't know much beyond your basics about a few trees. i know how to climb them n shoot deer out of them. that's about it lol

Leatherwood Outdoors I have seen them at small Bush size 2 foot tall in pasture at the wood line of course it was woody and hard. This was in Michigan.

I sat on a log one Turkey morning.
And in 30 minutes watched a very large patch of morels sprout.
That morning I learned to watch and wait.
After what seemed like a lifetime. I filled 3 walmart bags.
So no Turkey, but a great hunt anyway.

Yesterday I was out and here in NEPA,they are MISERABLE!!!! Was not shrooming yet (metal detecting)..Even in 6inches of snow them ticks are terrible..Why???
They grow a lot on my family ranch in texas national geographic has come out to take samples and its really neat why they grow there in kopprel texas

I hunted morels as a kid in Illinois. Live in Tennessee now. Great outing hunting mushrooms!!!! I have actually found them under large flower bushes in my yard as well as the forest.

Wow what a jack pot! I have been looking here in Northeast Pennsylvania for a few years I just have a problem finding where the trees are. I havent found any yet but this video really helps me with tree Identification. Almost time to start looking now! If I ever find a jackpot like you found I would have picked them all and dehydrated the ones I couldnt eat right away.
Trevor Mandra hey man don't dehydrate them, put them in water and bags like Ziplocs the freezer time and freeze them after you cut them up and they'll keep a lot better. This is the best way I found to keep them.

That is how I was raised on them. Just dusted with flour that has been seasoned with salt and pepper. Delicious.

Nice score man! Best I have ever done was found 30lbs in an open field seeded with grass/pasture seed. Didn't find any in the woods and walking back to truck my hunting buddy stepped on one. Best picking I've every done. Heard stories of people finding them like that and glad I was able to be one of them! Thanks for the Tulip tree tip, here in Indiana we only ever look around elms, cherry (for blacks) and occasionally old apple trees/orchards.
I used to work with a couple of guys that hunted these each year. They said eating them was better then a steak dinner. I’ve never had them, guess i should sometime.
I agree 100%. The best thing I’ve ever ate. Been ‘shrooming since I was tiny. Love them.
I find 90% of morels around sycamore trees,
still sometimes find them by elms and Ash, my grandma has an apple orchard that's about 20 acres, it's only about 20 years old though so haven't found any there yet
I have found the motherload only once in 40 years of hunting. It was a great day. Enjoy your harvest. Great video

Knowing Mycology I look at the State ground temperature map. After two weeks of 50° ground temp the primordia has set. The mycelium is active in the ground and gets ready to bloom when conditions are good. IE. Rain, moisture, temp. It is a sure fire way to know when to hunt.
Taking the base will not affect the mycelium of the mushroom or future development. It was only wasted material. It will merely self destruct.
After reading hundreds of comments from various mushroom related youtube videos, I can safely say that your scientific facts will be ignored :-) You know and I know that picking a mushroom with whatever method you favor will in no way, shape, or form damage the miles of underground mycelium. You know and I know that billions of spores have already been released to the air by the time you pick the mushroom and "tapping" them or dancing in circles while carrying them in a mesh bag will do absolutely nothing to disperse the spores. Regardless...you will see the same comments in EVERY mushroom video. Science? That's for nerds! :-)
@@michaelb2999 In fact the morel is not a mushroom at all. It is an imitator, no gills, and a member of the yeast family. Closely related to the truffle.

Awesome video! We had a great year for morels here in central Ohio. Found over 600 in our woods. I always try to be conscious of trees to look for, may apples, etc. But the last few years there hasn't seemed to be any rhyme or reason! I pretty much just take a stroll through the woods and pick em up left and right.

I always though about it as my super power kinda. I've been blessed to have never had it considering the amount of times I've been in contact with it. I can roll in it and come out fine my brother would come out covered in places you don't even want to imagine.
@@tomipaige5328 my husband tells story of going poo as child in woods on poison sumac. You can imagine the places the poison touched and the agony he still speaks of 40 years later.
People can suddenly become allergic to poison ivy, even after decades of no reaction. Also, getting the poison ivy oils on a mushroom can spread the oils on the bags or baskets and to other objects. And, it can expose anyone who is around to the vaporized oils when they are cooked. They can breathe it in and get swelling in their throat or lungs. Just need to be aware and careful.
OMG!! next time pick them all and just slice in half, dry on window screen out in the sun, store in net bag in dry spot and enjoy all winter.

Biggest one I ever found was a pound in itself before soaking. Was a bunch that were huge next to it but I’ll never forget. Video brought me back to that excitement of finding those huge ones. Gonna go out tomorrow and see if I can finds some in the same spot 😅 video got me pumped for them. Only found a few this year
Not sure where you are hunting but in Northern Arkansas / Southern Missouri some of my best locations have been among small tulip poplar saplings and small cedar trees. I honestly seem to find more in the sapling areas. Don't get me wrong there are a few large older trees that produce but one of my favorite spots has few trees over 6" in diameter.
I'm up in the boot heel area on Crowley ridge. Any suggestion on mushroom hunting in this area
Iam in SW Missouri, I checked my fav spots last week,no luck nights are not 50 as of yet maybe later this week they should be popping blacks and greys first

I bet the nicer restaurants and bistros pay top dollar for wild mushrooms like that. They've got so much more flavor than farmed mushrooms.

Thanks for the great video. Elms do indeed produce, but most were wiped out here (Chicagoland) long ago. Chinese Elm is actually worth checking. My brother had a mature Chinese Elm removed from his yard and the following spring he had numerous Morels!

I was trained to cut them off and not tear them. A semi sharp knife and a net bag are always part of the gear

What a great score on the morels! Yes, I hope there's the same abundance next year too. In my area, south western Manitoba CA, it's not so good for morels. We just didn't the rains we needed. Haven't given up quite yet though. Gotta go hunting again!

I never find them either at a location my dad would come back with bags full. I think it's over picked
for the new pickers...PLEASE use a net bag for carrying your mushrooms. the spores need to be spread. oarnge bags oinion bags ect. the next generation is counting on you. ( a clean car is more important to some people than a renewable source.😪)...which if thats the case, keep your plastic at your vehicle. please.

I used to find them when I was turkey hunting. Dead elm trees were the best spots to find them. Washed, then fried in bacon grease...... awesome!

Going out on Saturday here in Maryland. I found a lot last year only looking at tulips. Never knew how to identify elms, so I'm looking forward to using the seed pod ID tip.
