I’ve been using the Aqara M2 Hub for 2 months now and I have to say that the Ethernet port makes a great difference in reliability. Every accessory is much more responsive than through wifi.

@@ShaneCreatesso there was a new update for the m2 hub today and I updated, started snooping through the settings and realized you can now bind HomeKit with M2 matter, so I decided to bind and all it does is duplicate my Aqara smart devices in the HomeKit app. With that said do I bind or not? Thought maybe binding would make the connections better?
I took the plunge and just ordered a bundle with the hub and temperature sensors. I have dogs too....and the video you made about how to use fans was great. I live in an older house and the HVAC definiely doesn't keep up or distribute the cold evenly. I also am getting a Mini---so I'll be using the other videos you have to learn how to set that up.

Awesome video Shane! The M2 looks cool, especially with the Siri Shortcuts feature. I personally prefer the M1S b/c of that night light or the G2h since it knocks out 2 birds with one stone (camera + hub). Thanks for explaining the new M2 features well!
Thanks Adam! I also love the night light on the M1 hubs. I use mine as "status" lights often. I think the biggest selling point for the M2 is the ethernet port and the IR blaster, for those who are interested in either. Regardless, it's great to have options so pretty much anyone can find what something to fit their needs.

Agreed. You got me seriously interested, when I finally realized that our LED candles used an IR remote. And, rather than using their manual, countdown timer function as we do now, I might be able to have them use HK automations. But, that lack of IR exposure to HK is a deal killer for me.
At least I found that out here, from you Shane, before I ordered an M2 and ended up disappointed. ;-(
Also had the same issue while trying to pair via Ethernet. It worked fine when I connected my iPhone on my 2.4 Ghz network...

Lots of talk about the hub-less future this week. But I do like Aqara’s approach - if you’re going to need a hub make it multi-purpose and give it its own place in the smart home (camera, security, IR, etc…).

Please do a review of the "Bond Bridge" - I recently used it + Hoobs/Homebridge to add all of my ceiling fans to Homekit (it can learn and playback your ceiling fan RF remote signals to entire house - it also has a powerful IR blaster).

My main concern is the difference in the actual alarm as I really am wanting to ensure that I hear the leak sensors. How different is the alarm sound?
m1s has never made any alert triggers sounds for me. The sounds work when I set them up through the app (and when arming/disarming), but when the guards actually trigger, it only flashes lights and all the sounds come through iphone/mac/watches.
Does the remote button created with M2 can be added in Aqara Home app automation? I can do that using Mi Universal Remote with Mi Home app.
I'm going to install one of these setups but run the hub off a power bank with charge passthrough. For the siren I'll take your trick of using an Amazon sired, but pair it with a 20Ah 12V battery, and a 5V stepdown for a hacked up smart plug (basically turning the smart plug into a homekit controlled 12V relay). This will stop a burglar simply turning off my power which would kill the siren.
Hi Shane, love your videos. I realise that if i need to use the IR function, i have to sign in via Aqara app. But when i sign in via Homekit, the IR function is not there. Is this expected and any work around? thanks.
Great video as always Shane! I'm pretty bummed about the lack of IR device support in HomeKIt and the super quiet speaker, but the 128 device capacity and the fact that all four security system modes are exposed are pretty sweet!
Thanks Dustin! I figured it would be difficult to expose IR devices to homekit natively, but at least we can use Siri Shortcuts which can often get us close to what we need.

Hey Shane, kind of a rookie question for you: how do I get notifications from a door sensor or from a movement sensor when I’m away? I can’t seem to figure it out. They do work, but only when my phone is connected to the same 2.4 Ghz network as the M2 Hub. When I switch to the 5G one, or to the Cellular 4G connection, the hub appears disconnected from the Home app. Then I bought a Homepod mini and tried using the M2 as a bridge, but the results are the same. What am I missing here, please help!

Shaaaaaane! While the added IR devices are not exposed to HomeKit, are they exposed to Alexa? In a home theater, can I say, “Alexa, tourn on theater” and have it turn on the IR based protector and sound bar? Thanks Shane.

So I just picked up the M2. I also have a SmartThings hub and I use HomeKit can an Aqara wireless button ton control a TP link, smart plug that is available in HomeKit or SmartThings? I have smart thing buttons, but the batteries in these buttons will literally die in a week. I was hoping to use the Aqara button with some of my existing smart plugs, is that possible?

Great review, Shane! How do you rate this security system compared to the one you did recently with the Homebridge/Hoobs plugin?
Would you still recommend that compared to running it solely on M2? I guess you can still trigger the siren from a smart plug regardless?
Thanks Thomas! Both are pretty similar as far as functionality. The biggest difference probably is that with the Aqara Hub, you can only trigger the security system with Aqara sensors, and with the Homebridge solution, you can use any sensors.
With that said, I think the only reason to use the homebridge solution, if you have an Aqara Hub, is so you can use other brands' sensors. If using all Aqara sensors, I'd just use that. And yes, if doing that, you can always trigger an additional siren/smart plug if the Aqara security system is triggered.

What a great review good job bud! I got quick question, since my villa has 3 floors and the hub will be on the ground floor, the devices from other floors wont reach the hub. Is there a solution to that? Should i buy more hubs. I do have aqara h1 switches with N.
Thanks Mohammed! More hubs is definitely an option if you need greater reach for child devices. And the different hubs all work pretty well together… for example if you wanted a camera, you could get the camera hub. Alternatively, as you mentioned, certain controller accessories,like the switches with neutral wires and the smart plugs, are supposed to act as zigbee repeaters expanding the range of your zigbee network.
agora m2 hub question: How far can the sensors be from the hub? Can I run multiple M2 hubs in different parts of the house without issues? What are the gotchas?

Right now, I don't see Aqara rolling out support for thread since they use zigbee to connect all the child devices. Zigbee and Thread are very similar in many ways. They could possibly do like Phillips hue one day and support thread in their hubs only, but that doesn't provide much benefit.

Is the hub only to connect the accessories to? The reason I’m asking is I have 2 Aqara cameras, both have 3 accessories linked to them. The issue is, the minute you change WiFi, or change WiFi password, or anything like that, everything’s offline. There’s no way to go into the Aqara app and update the password. The only option is remove the devices from the Aqara app and HomeKit and add them all over again. Very painful. What I’m trying to understand is will the cameras also connect to the hub? My hope is that as the hub can be connected by Ethernet the cameras won’t reply in the WiFi details. Thanks

the built in IR blaster is super easy to configure and finally I have and IR blaster that directly works with Siri Shortcuts! I’m throwing my Logitech Harmony Huv away! I have Been asking logitech for Siri shortcut or HomeKit support for years, but they don’t listen.
Can this hub actually replace my Harmony Hub? I’m so sick of the inconsistent performance of the Harmony.

I am about to create a home alarm system with these products and I have a question. I case some one breaks in, by nature your eye would search for the alarm sound the the unit will sound! A reflex would be to rip it down and throw it into a wall or something .. would this silence the alarm and disconnect it?? Also if the wifi goes down in the house would the alarm still be functioning??

Yes I think it does require power so unplugging it would stop the alarm (I assume... haven't tried that). These products all connect via zigbee, so even if your wifi goes down, the security system should still work.

Hope you can help us with this one … looking to use the the IR function for our amplifier, do you know whether it accepts a double click function on the remote? Bought the Cygnett IR hub awhile back and it didn’t support the double click function, hope Aqara does! Cheers.

Thanks for watching! Yes it can connect to child devices through walls. It uses zigbee connection which has pretty good range. Of course the number of walls and material will play a part in the connection. I haven't done a real distance test with these, but I haven't had any issues connecting devices on one end of my house to another, on different floors. Additional Aqara hubs, or repeater accessories (light switch with neutral, smart plug, etc) can be used to extend the range if needed.

So can one connect LifX bulbs to the Aqare M2 instead of your normal router? Our internet supplier has issues with dropped connection now and then and when offline we are not able to control our lights... Would this be a fix worth going for?
No, you cannot connect LifX bulbs to the Aqara Hub. LifX bulbs are wifi based so they must connect to directly to your wifi network.

Quick question for you- I am running a Unifi network, and I am considering using their cameras for the house. They will not support HKSV, however.
The question is, are there any major benefits to person/animal detection when using HKSV, or will I not really be missing out on much by using a different solution? I tried to research this, but from what I can tell, there are no ways to run a specific automation or scene when a specific person or thing is detected.
Thanks for watching! I guess the main benefits of person/animal detection are your smart notifications. You can get notifications based on these things and determine which clips to record as well. You cannot run automations around person detection though at the moment. And soon we'll have package detection also!

Hi, great video. What would you suggest for a newbie in 2023 when Matter starts to roll out. I have homepod mini and Yale Linus with Yale bridge, and that’s it. Is Aqara M2 the best IR remote for siri shortcuts, or is there any solution for Matter ir remote? Also what about RF remotes? Are there anything on the market? I have a lot of RF controlled outlets, and would love to get those to work with homekit. Do you have any tips? Thanks in advance!
Hey thanks for watching. M2 is certainly a good option for IR and Siri Shortcuts. Not really sure about RF. I don't think there are any IR or RF remotes that work natively with homekit. Many have been able to get devices like these working in homekit via homebridge (not officially homekit certified). Might be worth lookin into, but might also be more than you want to deal with if you are just getting started.
Hi Shane, great video. Does the m2 hub connect to the cloud or does it act locally without an internet connection?
If you are using it only with HomeKit and/or the Aqara app, it can run locally without internet connection. Of course, with Alexa or Google, it will need to reach the cloud.
M2/P3/etc alarm mirroring still lacks in Home App.

Thanks Melvin! At the moment I'll just use it as an additional hub. Eventually I may move over all my Aqara child devices to the new one.

Flesh this out. I have my old hub and the new M2 on the Aqara app and the Home app. I don’t quite understand how they interact. HomeKit shows I have two security systems now… and if I “arm” the M2, it doesn’t automatically arm the original hub. So my status in the home app is that the security system (my original hub) is not armed. Even though the M2 IS armed. Does this make sense? Recommendations anyone? Should I remove my old hub completely and move to just the M2? I was hoping to use both and let the old hub cover my basement hard to reach sensors and let the M2 run my upper floors. Thoughts?

You did a great video previously about Thread , now part of the Matter standard. Are there any upcoming Matter based hubs about to hit the market?
Certain products will be able to act as thread border routers, such as the HomePod mini, the new Apple TV 4K, and the Nanoleaf Shapes. No, unfortunately there is not way to get the IR devices into homekit. Only support for Siri Shortcuts.
Can this be used stand alone thru the internet without nay other 3rd party? ie: NO homekit, No Google
Hi Shane, if I wanted install a door sensor for a detached garage that is about 25 ft away. Will I need a hub in both my home and garage?
25 ft isn't too bad. If your hub is close on that side of the house, you might be ok. I'd probably try with just one, then if I had a weak signal would get the second hub. Remember you can also use their cameras as hubs too, so maybe you could use a camera in the garage as a hub?
I currently have a M1 hub and four G2H camera hubs. I have ordered the M2 hub last week and it is supposed to be here tomorrow (Monday). I am planning on moving only the child devices to be used for the alarm system from the M1 hub to the M2 hub. That will be the 4 exterior door contact sensors and the 7 leak sensors. The temperature sensors and other contact sensors for the closet doors will remain on the M1 hub.
Question: If I were to use the new M2 hub as my primary alarm system controller, will I be able to use the motion sensors in the G2H camera hubs to trip the alarm system?
Yes, you can use the motion sensors from the G2H in your alarm modes.
Might be a dumb question but what would be the point in this, over the apple HomePods?

I enjoy your videos! I bought an Aquaria M2 hub specifically for the IR capability so I could switch inputs on my AVR using Siri.. I fired up the hub, added my Yamaha receiver, and learned the HDMI port buttons from the air remote. Everything works, but I can't figure out how to get Siri to run the "Watch Cable TV" automation I created in Aqara. I am also confused about the options to synch with Homekit or vice versa. Can you or someone please help?
You need to create a scene in the Aqara app (which maybe you've already done). Then you can "add to Siri" either by tapping the menu (3 dots) when editing the scene or by tapping the Siri icon from the main scene tab.
The Name synchronization just allows you to sync all the device names between the Aqara app and HomeKit so everything has the same names in both apps.
Hi, great video as usual! Stupid question: does the M1S hub expose all four alarm modes in HomeKit? I have the M1 and i want to expand the system to add more coverage and sensors, i have to choose between the M2 and the M1S. I have no need of IR and i want more volume for the alarm but i’m using only the away mode with the homekit geofencing. Having all the alarms exposed woul be very interesting
Hi Simone, that's not a stupid question. Yes, the M1S hub DOES expose all 4 alarm modes to homekit, unlike the previous generation M1 hub. If you want more volume, that is probably a good option for you.

This (and their cheap accessories) seems a good fit for a “ring security replacement” Homekit alarm system - what would you add as a smart lock (looks like the one you had tested isn’t available now?) Apple don’t seem to have any Homekit approved locks?
Sure, there are a number of homekit locks available. I've only used a couple of them. Haven't used them personally, but I've also heard good things about Schlage and Level lock.
I inherited an August G2 smart lock - trying to get that to work. Homekit reports it closing and opening but says “setup required’ - wonder if it needs the wifi module? Written to August support so we’ll see.
Shane, I have struggled to use multiple Aqara hubs including M1S in combination with M1 and G2H hubs to extend my range. I heard this is supposed to be possible but I have had no luck getting it to work. When I add a new hub, all devices remain connected to the original Aqara hub, and signal remains poor after long periods or restarting the child device.
I see nobody covering this topic on TH-cam, so it could be a helpful video to make!
Adding additional hubs will not extend the range. You can remove accessories and pair to another hub. The only way to extend the range of your current hub/zigbee network is to use devices that can act as a zigbee repeater, such as the Aqara smart plug or Aqara smart switch (with neutral wire).
@@ShaneCreates thanks, that’s what I’ve had to do in some cases but it’s still not ideal because one has to reconfigure all HomeKit scenes and automations.
I also have a couple of Aqara smart plugs and it does not seem to help.

Thanks for watching. The child devices connect via Zigbee. They may work in the Mi Home app (they used to), but it's been a long time since I tried. I use the Aqara app and homekit.

Shane, if you already had Smartthings hub, would you purchase Aqara sensors and used them with it or you'd rather go Aqara sensors with Aqara hub. Does it make sense to purchase this additional hub?
I have not used them with a Smartthings hub so I'm not sure if the sensors maintain all the same functionality as the Aqara Hub or not.
Would you recommend going with an all aqara eco system - instead of lutron? Or is Wifi still a good option?
I'm assuming you are just referring to light switches? Aqara uses zigbee, not wifi, to connect to light switches and all other child devices. I like the Aqara products. They have worked well for me. I also love Lutron for light switches, but yea, Aqara is a good budget option. I like the fact that they DON'T use wifi and instead use zigbee.
So with this thing, if my existing ceiling fan has a remote I can make this thing learn my ceiling fan remote correct???
Yes, if it's an IR remote.
Just found this channel and been watching the crap out of these vids. I think in one you said something about having a server or server room setup or something like that. If I understood that right, I’d love a video showing how you have all the different hubs hooked up and connected to your WiFi router? Is there some type of multi-socket hub or deck you just plug into router that has a bunch of Ethernet sockets? Does connecting a ton of hubs directly to the router affect internet speed or reliability?
Thanks for watching Clay! My "server room" is just a closet under my stairs where my main router and various hubs live. It's actually quite a mess right now lol. That is a big project on my To-Do list one of these days. I really need to fix it up and organize it again.
I do use an unmanaged gigabit ethernet switch, just to provide more ethernet ports for things like hubs. Connecting many hubs via ethernet shouldn't really affect speed or reliability assuming you have a decent router.
I will be doing a smart home tour sometime in the near future and I'll be happy to show this area (and the mess that it is). And maybe if I ever get around to re-organizing it and fixing up the "server room", that could potentially be another video on it's own.

What will be your recommendation for Smart Light Switch (no neutral) of 1/2/3-gang that works with Homekit??
My "go-to" is always Lutron Caseta for smart switches. No neutral needed for their dimmers. And "runner-up" is probably Aqara switches as a good budget option.

Hey, Shane! I’m currently thinking about getting the Aqara G4 and U100, which means I also need to get a hub. Does it matter whether I get the M1S vs. this M2 hub for the lock and doorbell?
It does not matter in terms of acting as a hub. I did make a video showing the differences of all the hubs. So it just depends on what other features you prefer.
M1S has a louder speaker and the cool LED ring. The M2 can be connected via Ethernet and can be used as an IR blaster.

Thanks Jimmi! I actually haven't tested that out.. with DND. Not sure if you can force notifications like that through. If not, I'd rely on the siren, or get an additional siren, or you could turn on your bedroom lights maybe when the alarm is triggered (if you have homekit lights in the bedroom).

Hey there I have installed M2 and led 2 sensors wireless button and smoke alarm. However, both sensors does not appear in my HomeKit, I was only able to see my hub M2 in Apple home app. Do you know why.
If your hub is showing up in the Apple home app, all paired sensors should also be showing in the home app. Check the room (in the home app) that the M2 hub is and see if the sensors are there. You can also go to the M2 bridge settings in the home app and see the accessories paired to it.
I just set mine up. For whatever reason on the remote control setup all the icons have Chinese (I assume) under them even though the hub language is set to English. Wth
I’m new to HomeKit and not sure I’m clever enough for homebridge.
Will this control my roller shutters? I was provided with ORVIBO allone and it doesn’t seem to be able too be added to my home
Hey Peter. If your shutters can be controlled via IR, then you could add those controls to this hub. However, that will not expose them to HomeKit, or the Home app.
Shane PLEASE can you check if you also can only enable up to 18 sub devices (sensors) who is able to trigger the hub? (I am not talking about adding sensors to the hub, this works fine with more then 30 devices… I really mean just select the accessorie to trigger the alarm (I use the aqara app only in homekit mode) Everytime I try to enable another (>18) sensor, the toggle goes back and says invalid parameter. Do you have the same problem? Or do you not have enough sensors to check? Thank you very much!
Hey Patrice, sorry but I don't have that many sensors. Have you reached out to support? Maybe they have an answer. I wonder if you've reached a limit of trigger devices for the alarm.

Is this supporting multi-users - for example, to have the same setup on two or more phones?
If using HomeKit, you can "invite" other iPhone users to join your home. Then they can access your smart home accessories on their devices.
