Let's not forget, this was the first we saw Shy Guys, Snifits, Birdo, Bob-Ombs, Vegetables, and much more. This game introduced loads of things that would become staples to the Super Mario universe. There's a lot to be thankful for with this game.

Love it. :3 So how long did it take to get a good run of the stage with a 7's match in the slots at the end? :p (I have trouble getting the timing for the last two 7's right; either the timing for the third one depends on whether the second one has already stopped spinning or not, or I'm completely misreading how those last two slots work and I'm missing something obvious. Probably the latter. XD)
Hi 4matsy! I believe the logic behind the slots is so that you can't intentionally get a match. It has to be based on luck unless you know this logic which likely has to do with what the scrolling slot displays when you press (and it certainly does not give you what it displays at the frame where you press).

I'd honestly say Super Mario Land 2 is the most underrated, but I guess this one is too.
