  • Carol Pflueger, Servers Product Manager, introduces the Dell PowerEdge FX architecture, combining Dell networking, servers, and storage. She begins with the PowerEdge FX2 enclosure, discusses flexible PCIe mapping, and shows the FC630, FM120, FC430, FD332, FC830, and IOAggregator. Recorded as part of Virtualization Field Day 4 in Austin, TX on January 16, 2015. For more information, visit TechFieldDay.co... or Dell.com

Wow - just what I needed to watch to familiarize myself with FC630 and the FX chassis. Excellent presentation

That was great information and an excellent presentation.
I do have 1 question relating to the PCI-e cards. I saw how the 4 modules in the FC630 allows for the redundancy by being assigned 2 slots. However; if I were to put in 1/4 width server sleds, I would loose the redundancy. Am I missing something or a slide that explains the architecture of the 8 sleds vs 4 sleds? Is this chassis only for 4 sleds and a different chassis is for the 8 sleds?

Can the FC630s share the storage, as they would need for vSphere HA, like the VRTX?

Gene Torres Hi, I had the same question, and unfortunately the FX-series does not seem to be able to share storage. I quote from www.virtualizationpractice.com/dell-poweredge-fx2-converged-architecture-32190/ :"The FX2 chassis itself is more like the Dell PowerEdge VRTX than the venerable M1000e blade system. All three products have similar integrated KVM and Chassis Management Controllers (CMCs), and they can be configured with redundant CMCs. Like the VRTX, the FX2 uses PCIe as the internal fabric, and both have assignable PCIe slots. Each slot can be assigned to a single compute node, but the slots can’t be shared with SR-IOV. The PCIe RAID controllers in the FD332 can only be attached to one compute node at a time, unlike the VRTX, which can share its storage among the compute nodes."
