How Devices Connect to the Fabric: Understanding Cisco ACI Domains

  • Carly Stoughton, a Technical Marketing Engineer at Cisco, presented an in-depth look at how devices connect to the Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) fabric, focusing on the concept of ACI domains. She began by explaining the basic architecture of ACI, which includes a spine-leaf topology where all devices connect to leaf switches, and leaves connect to spines but not to each other. This setup ensures predictable latency and efficient data flow. Stoughton emphasized the role of the Application Policy Infrastructure Controller (APIC) in managing these connections and policies, highlighting how it integrates with various types of devices and systems, such as VMware servers, bare metal servers, and external routers.
    Stoughton detailed the integration of VMware into ACI through the creation of Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) domains. This integration allows for enhanced visibility and control over VMware environments by pushing a VMware distributed switch into the servers, enabling each port group to act as an endpoint group (EPG). This method allows network administrators to define EPGs based on virtual ports rather than traditional VLANs or physical ports. The APIC establishes a relationship with the VMware vCenter, creating a VMM domain for each data center, which helps in isolating and managing different environments. This setup ensures that network policies are consistently applied across virtual machines, simplifying management and enhancing security.
    In addition to VMware integration, Stoughton discussed how ACI handles other types of devices through physical and external Layer 2 and Layer 3 domains. For bare metal servers, a physical domain can be created to group servers with similar policies into the same EPG, regardless of their physical or virtual nature. External Layer 2 domains are typically used for connecting to existing data center switches, while external Layer 3 domains facilitate connections to WAN or internet routers using protocols like OSPF, static routing, and BGP. Stoughton also touched on the future support for additional protocols like EIGRP and IPv6. This comprehensive approach ensures that ACI can accommodate a wide range of devices and configurations, making it a versatile solution for modern data centers.

    I absolutely love this video. Not only because how clearly and cleanly she explained the architecture with practical examples. But the guys in then audience asked all the questions that were popping on my mind as I was watching this. It's as if I was represented in the class. Just awesome. And I was blown away when I realised allnthiswas explained and discussed in such a casual flow in only 30min. Clean and precise 👌👏👏👏👏👏

    I tried to watch this back in 2015, 2016, 2017 and could not for the life of me understand it. I was an enterprise network engineer, didn't really work with DC technologies like vSphere, storage, nexus switches. Now I'm studying for CCNP Datacenter and work with VMware NSX on a daily basis. All of this makes sense now. Its crazy to me that this tech existed in 2015 and she has such a strong command of the architecture. I think I'm just in awe and having a moment when you understand something clearly that you did not understand previously. I'm even watching it at 1.75 speed and following everything.

    Hi, about ARP request, when the destination MAC is unknown, the switch leave use COOP aka Council Of Oracle Protocol to send the request to any spine choose randomly in the fabric, The spine switch (oracle) that was chosen then relays this information to all the other spines (oracles) so that every spine (oracle) has a complete record of every end point in the system.
    The spines (oracles) record the information learned via the COOP in the Global Proxy Table, and this information is used to resolve unknown destination MAC/IP addresses when traffic is sent to the Proxy address.

    @ 27:00 - OSPF adjacency over vPC - this is not entirely correct as explained - from the connected router or FW (despite the fact vPC is configured between the two relevant leafs at the ACI side) - perspective there's 2 neighbors - so for that matter your SNM should match a larger b/c domain. One would think the peering could be a /31 but that''s not the case - This is no big deal BTW but took us by surprise back then.

    • @infomaniac_mit
      @infomaniac_mit 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes /31 not suffice the requirement, you would have ospf neighbor between VPC peer and both VPC peer to external device

    Thank to HSRP vPC we can have active-active connection and from router's perspective the leafs look like only one logical box and since we're going to use vIP there wouldn't be any more problem.

    • @dlambert1988
      @dlambert1988 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Think of spine and leaf as a a disaggregated chassis. The spines are the backplane and the leafs are the line cards. Spines are only to be used to connect other leafs. Cisco does break this rule with data center inter-connectivity however.
