Buckwild Facts About Mata Hari, The Exotic Dancer Who Became A WWI Spy

  • Who was Mata Hari? Exotic dancer, courtesan, seductress, spy, and femme fatale: Mata Hari was many things to many different people. But she is perhaps best remembered for the fact that she was executed during World War I for espionage.
“Mata Hari” was actually a stage name - and an invented persona. She was born Margaretha “Gertha” Zelle in the Netherlands in 1876 to a wealthy, if unexceptional, family. At the age of 18, she fled her boring life in the Netherlands for the Dutch East Indies where she became an officer’s wife. The new Mrs. MacLeod didn’t find happiness there, but she did develop an interest in Indonesian dance...

i live nearby the house where Matahari used to live with her husband in Malang. the house is a military police headquarter now and other than the exterior painting, everything is still remain the same as more than 100 years ago when Matahari used to live there. the house is around 30 minutes to the Singosari temple from where she copied her dance move. and her costume probably inspired by the statue of Kendedes or Pradnya Paramitha as the accessories she used resembled the the statue the most. the dance movement she copied from the carvings on the outer wall of the temple. fun fact is, the statue was made to immortalise the first Queen of Singosari, Kendedes, who was said to be the most beautiful and smartest woman in that era. and legend said that when Kendedes' thigh got exposed when her skirt blown by the wind, men would go crazy over her as the thigh shone like a sun (there the name Matahari). but this is just my thought.

No, I don't believe so. I think I remember it from a Stuart Copeland interview or biography of some sort.
In it, he remembered seeing Sting in some rock/jazz group, when Sting played an upright bass as well as an electric one & could sing very well. Which is a tremendously hard thing to do- play bass while singing. Copeland knew this, of course & set out after Sting to join him in what would eventually become The Police. Andy Summers was the last to join, as their original guitarist was (sp. ?) Henry Padovani, I think his name was....

I've heard the name Mata Hari so many times over the years, and I knew a few things about her, her demise for instance, but not that much at all. Yes I knew that a woman called Mata Hari was executed for spying during WW1, but I guess I just couldn't get my head around how such an exostically named person could be involved in espionage in WW1 (especially the european theatre), so I always kind thought I'd get around to looking into it later and/or I just never took it that seriously because it almost sounded kinda 'pantomimeish' (which, in a way, it kinda was). Finally, for me, this vid has clarified so many things about her life and how she came to be. Very interesting.

*Fun fact:* In the 1967 movie adaptation of "Casino Royale", it's revealed that Mata Hari had with James Bond a daughter named Mata Bond, who is also a magnificent spy like her parents. If you think about it, Bond and Hari are actually a PERFECT match

The narrator's comments about Mata Hari leaving her daughter are insensitive and unnecessary. Women shouldn't stay in situations that are abusive just because they have a kid with someone. This man was determined to ruin her life and beat her. She needed to leave. Have empathy for someone in an impossible situation, and don't try to moralize something you couldn't possibly understand. I bet her abusive husband also used the "But your daughter..." card to try and get her to stay and take more beatings.

Please do an episode on Loreta Janeta Velazquez, a.k.a. Lieutenant Harry Buford. She was one of many women who fought in the US Civil War in male disguise in order to serve. Another one is Sarah Edmonds Seelye, a.k.a. Franklin Thompson, the only woman who received a veteran’s pension for her service in that war.

Mata Hari was a BOY prostitute, commonly known in India and the East as "Dancing Boys".
Note @3:20 the narrator states..."Even with the 'ARRIVAL" of two children; it didn't bring the couple together" These boys ARRIVED because Zelle, (aka, Mata Hari) and Rudolph, PURCHSED two very young boys for purposes of pedophila and sexual perversions.
@3:29, narrator says, "Both children 'fell ill' and one of them died. The Narrator verifies this when he says @3:39, "Most likely the children suffered from syphillis, CONTRACTED FROM THEIR PARENTS" Oh my gawd!

For line #5, "Bette Davis Eyes" by Kim Carnes is a song that is similar to the seductions of Mata Hari!
She'll expose you, when she snows you
Offer feed with the crumbs she throws you
She's ferocious and she knows just what it
Takes to make a pro blush
All the boys think she's a spy, she's got Bette Davis eyes
