Elden Ring - Ray Tracing On/Off Comparison | RTX 4090 | 4K Graphics/Performance Max Settings

  • Elden Ring just got an update featuring Ray Tracing and it's.... A big performance hit. Can we get to 700 subscribers??
Can you see the difference? I was hoping for more. That seems to be the case every time ray tracing is implemented. The Witcher 3 had me spoiled with it's RTGI. When a game like this or Hogwarts only uses shadows and AO, it become fairly underwhelming. What do you think??
    ELDEN RING Patch 1.09
    PC Specs:
    -Mainboard: ASUS Strix z690-E
    -CPU: Intel 12900k
    -CPU Cooler: NZXT Kraken z73
    -RAM: DDR5 Corsair Vengeance 5200mhz
    -GPU: Gigabyte Gaming OC #rtx4090
    -PSU: Corsair RM1000x

i found a big difference when there is light coming from a specific direction. When RT is off you are almost in the dark and with RT on the scene is totaly changed it seems a different game
Unfortunately these scenes from the video did not showed that big difference.
The areas with fog also are a lot different but the GPU usage is also even worst the more you notice these effects.

They only used RT AO, sadly. Had they used global illumination, this game would look INCREDIBLY different with RT on. GI's what it's all about, honestly.

@@MikeSakaruthe game doesn't need RTGI as it's using software based global illumination with light and color bounce off, From Software did an excellent job at that, so obviously the only RT to really add in Elden Ring would be RT AO & RT Shadows. Unfortunately they've completely borked the implementation, eats up over 50% of performance, it doesn't have driver level access to direct x

RT makes the game look washed out, distance texture and shadows looks blurrier, leaves on trees looks it's from Oblivion's Painted World, some areas become darker(cuz of ambient occlusion) and sometimes my character's face looks like it's glowing. For a slightly better ambient occlusion with huge performance impact. I think i rather turn RT off lol.

They made such a big deal over RT, but it rarely makes a sizable difference in atmosphere quality or visual fidelity.
There should be far greater peaks and valleys for light/shadow.
When I look at the scene with the lake at night, it should be extremely difficult to see under trees and cast thicker shadows off objects - while light from the moon bounces up illuminating objects with an Erie glow.

Alright, I'm gonna say it: I prefer it without Ray tracing.
In scenes under daylight it's hard to perceive the benefits of ray traced shadows and light, it's not that different from maxing out settings.
But when it comes to underground or nighttime, the lit areas are too bright and the dark areas too dark. The segment at 1:37 shows what I mean - while the Grace spot has a more subtle and gentle light surrounding it, the volumetric fog surrounding the blue on the gate is gone in the ray traced version making the scene darker in comparison, but the blue seal itself shines more aggressively and I find it very distracting.
As I mentioned in the Metroid Prime Unreal Engine 4 VS Remastered video comparison, art direction is all about lending the graphics to gameplay - if being realistic has a negative impact on the way the player experiences the game, then realism must be foregone. In the case of Metroid Prime in UE4, the reflections on the canon distract from gameplay because it draws the attention from the enemies to the weapon and blinds the player from the bottom right quarter of the screen, in the case of ER, visibility gets compromised in a game where enemies dressed in black and other colors that blend into the environment love to lurk around awaiting in ambush.
Plus the FPS hit isn't worth it.

Without Global or Local Light Raytracing, It would be really hard to see the difference. Since rasterised shadows has come a long way that its nearly identical to raytraced shadows. Yes i can see the difference. But remember, You will only see the difference if you know what you are looking for. and since Elden Ring implemented Raytracing only 10% of what it could do. Maybe my eyes are getting old, BUT for sure I did not see any differences.. Lmao. Not worth the effort to lose FPS's for this gimmick.

What kind of Ray Tracing setting do you have? Maximum or High? It is not clear judging on this video.

Hey sorry it would be the highest setting. Haven't been back to Elden Ring in a little while!

There's barely any difference Bandai isn't really good at upgrades right? first the "PS5 vesion of Xenoverse 2" and now this they either make their games at the highest possible capacity and try to makert something that doesn't exist or they are really dumb and can't improve their products.

I never actually did any modding when I played Elden ring, I'm sure it is though. I looked into it at the time but wanted the player notes haha
