Great react here- just a couple things I noticed:
"I only tell good lies. Like, it's OK we're so toxic. That was a good try. My expectations are like a foot high. You can't let me down" - I think master of double speak Marlon is saying here that he's telling the niceity lies (like creatives do in social circles when we don't want to get into touchy critiques in that moment) His expectations are low- as in just tell the truths & honor the core intentions of hip hop (rebellion, creativity,acknowledge & honor cultures other than yt status quo) but since that doesn't make money for the big wig yt guys that have got their claws in- that expectation isn't a low bar anymore & he does feel let down that more rappers either aren't seeing or aren't acting on the twisting of their art form for the profits of a few- which leads to "janitors of oppression" and related bars. He's saying that at the behest of same head honchos, rappers talk about choices& actions in their music & since the rest of us are taught to honor celebrity & money above all else- "kids make real decisions in the graves or in the prisons".
I bet if we could look at some investment portfolios, we'd find more than a few crossovers between record companies & for profit prisons.
An over arching theme in Marlon's music is that he's trying to point out that the capture & comidification of Black &Brown rebellion by Yt capitalists, hip hop has been being used as yet another sneaky weapon against BIPOC communities & has turned Euro-centric ideal of "F you, I'm gonna get mine" into a global mantra that is going to kill everyone eventually.
Edit: I made my comment around the time the referenced part was being broken down- paused, commented, kept listening to you. Your comments at the end of this are spot on and I appreciate your insight into the age groups companies are targeting and why. Adults like us that are aware need to be helping influence the kids we know the other direction. For instance I let my preteen son listen to Marlon. He loves this I95 freestyle (even though he doesn't understand all of it yet- seeds are being planted and we have foundations for conversations that are coming up in the next few pubescent years.) I found you b/c I'm just a 40 something white, very Lefty mom that is trying to listen to & learn from others.
