I’ve used this stain process before but wish this video existed. Really great tips and makes me want to try another project with it. Especially with Oak.
Oh, that oak looks fantastic. Didn't expect that steel wool+vinegar oil will give such rich colour. That stain gives nice colour to pine. But I definitely didn't see that that type of stain on any hardwood. Now i want to try something similar with beech wood (I simly can't find oak boards in my area). I've heard over Modern Maker Podcast that you and Mike from Modern Builds were going to make some videos for Dwell. Should we wait for Mike's projects?
You should make a mixture of black tea in a jar (leave the tea in the water for a day or so) and you can apply it before the steel wool mix as a "pre stain conditioner". helps make not oak boards take the black really well
adding on to the finishing step would be to first rake out the grain of the oak with a brass brush, stain with ebony vinegar and steel wool, light seal of clear shellac, liming wax, buff excess, hard carnauba and bees wax and buff polish the finish this achieves a cerused oak, ie dramatic grain effect .
Oh that's so cool! Also a really nice small doable project!! I would like to see more simple stuff like this or some sort of bed frame with storage underneath that's a little more sleek! Keep up the great work!
If you find that the oak doesn't darken as much as you'd like, you can steep oak shavings/sawdust in hot water, and brush the resulting "tea" onto your board, then reapply the vinegar solution.
It's crazy how fast the oak changes color!!! This is giving me some great ideas!
I saw an oak bench and I want to stain it black - sung to the tune of "Paint it, Black" by the Rolling Stones. Nice bench. Thanks for sharing!

Looks great! I remember seeing Ben ebonize this in his stories on Instagram. Turned out great. I didn’t know Oak would do that.

Really cool quick build. I love the white leg look better but both are great!

Wow, very impressive! Love the black wood grain look!
Love the color!
Love that dark wood look.

Looks killer
Cool staining tip! : )
Cool! The stain looks a bit like a black oxide coating on steel.
How dark of a black would you say this is? Like does it have a brown tint? Looks awesome!
Great finish. Quick question: How strong is the oak tread? Will it support 250 lbs in the center when braced only on the ends?
Could you make something a little less complicated next time
