    Figure this is the best spot to mention a Dylan contemporary who's been forgotten for too long--since he died in 1976. Phil Ochs (pronounced Oaks) offered some brutally honest folk music that dealt with things like civil rights (Too Many Martyrs, Here's to the State of Mississippi), free speech (I'm Gonna Say It Now) as well as anti-war anthems (Draft Dodger Rag, I Ain't Marching Anymore). One song of his that's sadly relevant right now is "Knock on the Door"--about living under dictatorships. He also had a bitterly sarcastic song about people's apathy about getting involved, "Outside of a Small Circle of Friends," as well as the poignant "When I'm Gone." Some powerful music that is worth a listen.

    • @JKTritt
      @JKTritt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Spo-Dee-O-Dee I think, perhaps, you may want to do more homework on how Reuben Carter was convicted.
      I was born in NJ in the early 60’s, I’ve heard about the man my entire life. I had the honor of privately meeting him in the early 90’s in Boston. Despite his reputation as a boxer, I can honestly say he is one of the most gentle souls I have ever been in the presence of. He absolutely radiated peace.
      It wasn’t a simple matter of being “wrongly convicted”, the man was railroaded through the court system simply because he was a black man driving an expensive car through the wrong neighborhood by a police chief who had political ambitions. Other than that, there was absolutely no evidence against him. For the crime of being black, he spent 20yrs on death row.

    I used to work in a supermarket, I get that it's frustrating, when you are too busy or not busy enough, having to stay there, until the day's work is done, or your shift is over, when people can be crabby and your feet hurt and you are getting tired. So I tell shop-workers to "have fun, when they get out of there." Just acknowledging that work is not usually fun, and looking forward to getting out of there, is a constant. I get lots of smiles, from workers, maybe I could have just taken their mind off things, given them something else to think about, or even made their day, you can never know. It never hurts to be kind.

      @@johncagnettajr344 Well, the album was released in May of 1963 (and song was written in 1962). I don't mean to quibble - I only mean to point out that the song wasn't written about Vietnam. (At the time the song was written, there was much more concern about the war between India and China or the Cuban Missile Crisis.) It's brilliant because it's so universal and it took on huge cultural significance later in the 1960s because of Vietnam and the Civil Rights movement.

Many of them claiming to be Dylan that aren't Official on TH-cam are cover artists scamming themselves as Dylan. A short story. During the early sixties, when folk music was big, Joan Baez was at the top. So, I went to a concert of hers back in 1961. During the concert she introduced a ‘friend’ of hers (probably lovers) named bob Zimmerman. He was unknown at the time, and everyone booed him because of his voice. He later changed his name to Bob Dylan. All this music like ‘blowing in the wind’, ‘The Times They Are A Changing’ were made in the early 60’s. He soon took over the folk music scene. The song ‘Like A Rolling Stone’ (also of the 60’s) is called ‘FOLK ROCK’. I was born in the 1940’s, so I grew up in the 50/60’s. You may. Find this hard to believe but, i remembered when rock and roll never existed.

    It is Peter Paul and Mary's version that I know. Bob Dylan's "all along the watchtower" was made famous by Jimi Hendrix and is part of the background of the 60's/70's and my life. We often talk about the original, or the live, or the best cover. "all along the watchtower" by Jimi is a must do for many reasons.

    Reactors seem to be getting fooled by this guy all the time. Dylan music gets blocked so this guy's videos are always unknowingly being used instead. Of course, Bob's songs are so good that people still have unending praise; but make no mistake, Bob's delivery is superior to the copycat.

    The lyrics in so many songs are poetry and who reads poetry nowadays.
    In the modern times lyrics in songs are poetry, even in Heavy Metal. Some songs are good, some songs are bad, and some songs are just great.
    I have been listening to so many lyrics since I was a teen in the 1970's, and I try to understand what the song is about (even Modonnas music). Now I'm 63 and lyrics have more meaning to me as in my youth.
    Words don't come easy 🤗
