As a horse nerd, the mule description was fairly accurate. They are the cross between a female horse and a male donkey. Mules are to our knowledge sterile but there is some mules 😳 who think otherwise. The cross between a male horse and a female donkey (which is rare) is called a Hinny. Not to be confused with a Jenny (female mule). But most are probably familiar with a male mule (a jacka$$). They are pack animals but can be rode and also driven (carts and carriages). They have bigger ears and heads than horses but other than that they are the same size as horses.

Fun fact regarding meats having different names to the animals in English: it comes from when the Kings & Queens of England spoke a lot of French (Norman Conquest etc.) and so when they were presented the prepared meats to eat, they would use the French words, so boeuf became beef, mouton became mutton etc. Meanwhile the farmers who dealt with the animals would say cow, sheep, etc.

1:49 sorry if this has been talked about, this portion of genetics has always fascinated me. a mule is essentially the halfway point between a horse and a donkey, as it has one full set of horse chromosomes (total of 32 individual chromosomes) and one full set of donkey chromosomes (total of 31 individual chromosomes) rather than two sets of chromosomes from the same species. This is also why they can’t reproduce: chromosomes need a “twin” to pair with during cell division. If a chromosome doesn’t have a twin to pair with, then the resulting cells from the division will not have the correct number of chromosomes. Since a mule has a total of 63 chromosomes, even if every chromosome was paired to the correct one (which is difficult on its own, considering they’re different species with different genes on each chromosome), there will always be one chromosome that cannot be paired with another. Fun fact regarding meats having different names to the animals in English: it comes from when the Kings & Queens of England spoke a lot of French (Norman Conquest etc.) and so when they were presented the prepared meats to eat, they would use the French words, so boeuf became beef, mouton became mutton etc. Meanwhile the farmers who dealt with the animals would say cow, sheep, etc.
I just talked to my dad about this like 2 days ago, so when they mentioned it I so wanted to go through the screen and add another educational knowledge to the episode.

a mule is essentially the halfway point between a horse and a donkey, as it has one full set of horse chromosomes (total of 32 individual chromosomes) and one full set of donkey chromosomes (total of 31 individual chromosomes) rather than two sets of chromosomes from the same species. This is also why they can’t reproduce: chromosomes need a “twin” to pair with during cell division. If a chromosome doesn’t have a twin to pair with, then the resulting cells from the division will not have the correct number of chromosomes. Since a mule has a total of 63 chromosomes, even if every chromosome was paired to the correct one (which is difficult on its own, considering they’re different species with different genes on each chromosome), there will always be one chromosome that cannot be paired with another. This results in infertile eggs and sperm. This is very similar to the process of making “seedless” fruits, as the aim with them is to create a fruit with an odd number of chromosomes so that the seeds produced by said fruit are infertile, making them smaller and a little less noticeable while eating 😊
