Borneo rainforest - afternoon soundscape in the jungle

  • The soundscape in Borneo changes quickly as darkness descends upon the rainforest. At 5.30pm the dusk chorus is in full force, with a variety of birds singing beautifully. Half an hour later, as the sun sets, the beautiful birdsong is a distant memory, taken over by the harsh electric sound of Empress cicadas and other insects calling.
Sit back, relax and listen to this field recording I made as dusk was falling in the jungle. Bird species like Shama and Barbet can be heard easily in the first half. If you pay close attention you'll also be able to hear the distinctive, almost maniacal laughter of Helmeted hornbills. Insect life takes over towards the end of the video, sounding more like a harsh drone composition than a lush natural soundscape.
Recorded in the Borneo rainforest with Sony PCM D10, Lom MikroUsi micropohones and BubbleBee Windbubbles. I left my field recording drop rig out in the undergrowth for 24 hours to capture a full day-night cycle. Enjoying the videos I upload on here? Feel free to support me by:

Fascinating soundscape, with some eerie sounds towards the end which I guess are the hornbills. So many creatures making themselves heard, and captured beautifully.

Thanks! The eerie sounds towards he end are Empress cicadas.

It feels so good to feel deep in the jungle without those city lights and traffic noise.

Oh yes, there's nothing like a few weeks spent in the rainforest away from man-made sound and other nonsense.

Borneo is one of the most important places on Earth and must be protected at all costs!

I think Earth on the whole needs to be protected at all costs, but Borneo is indeed exceptionally biodiverse and therefore important.

I've spent 4 month in SE Asia last year, including Borneo, and Sumatra. Your work teleports me back to those places, somewhat easing my pain that I cannot be there. Thanks a lot!

This is incredible from the opening but from minutes 30 to40+ is an other-worldly recurring sound(s) that is just astonishingly beautiful (sci-fi film composers should be tripping over themselves to sample this). Absolutely outstanding presentation of the sounds of natural life. Thank you!

Thanks Anthony. Yes indeed, it’s quite a surreal soundscape to experience and listen to. Excellent sampling material at the very least.

    Hi George,
What insects are present during the last 10 minutes of this soundscape?
I can hear Crickets and Cicadas that have been in the background from the beginning, but there is amuch harsher, almost electrical whining pearcing sound most prevalent in the last 5 minutes that I don't recognise and havent heard in your recordings before.
    Once again a fantastic soundscape.
    Regards:
    Melissa.

      Hi Melissa,
Thanks for the kind words. Unfortunately I don't know the species names for these insects. You're right, there are crickets and cicadas and I would add katydids as well. I will try to find an entomologist who has knowledge regarding Borneo insects and I'll post back.
