It isnt an actual photograph. it is an artistic rendering of trillions of bits of data gathered by hundreds of telescopes and received back in 2017. The data was then analized by computers and edited by scientists and what you see is the result. Not an actual photograph but what the computer and scientists compiled to achieve this result. Hardly astonishing when so many things could be subject to interpretation.

Not exactly a photography. The guy in the video explained how it was made. Actually you can't make a real photo (with lenses, light rays and CCDs or reactive films) of a black hole. Radiotelescopes work differently.

    • @pathrender
      @pathrender 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@baladar1353 I've seen radio imaging really look just like real photographs before, for example I used a radio telescope to view a comet quite a few months ago and its shape and even some surface details like craters and scars were prevalent in the image. Although this isnt a "real" photograph, It's a visual approximation of what youd actually see with your eyes, no need to be so specific you look like an ass

This result is a little bit unexpected for me because it almost seems
like we're looking top down (on the angle of rotation) yet light is
bunched up on one side and dimmed on the other. In the models I've seen
this bunching effect covers the black hole slightly as material orbits
between the object and the observer, but we're not seeing this in this
photo (or maybe we are and it's not as obvious).
    And if we were
looking top down then we'd expect to see the same luminosity at all
points around the orbit (assuming no bright objects were in that area,
like stars). So, I'd like to see this photo with the angle of the
galactic plane superimposed to be able to make more sense of what is
    happening.
Disclaimer: I'm not a scientist. Just an average Joe
with average understanding of this subject, so if you do know something I
don't, don't expect me to know it :o)

Such large sparse baseline interferometry is quite impressive but the process of tweaking the processing looked rather fleeting as the images changed rather substantially. How certain is this rendition? is it possible it doesn't look like that at all? that it's just a few sine lobes tweaked to give the result they were looking for.
A few images in sequence showing the noise and change would be more convincing.

They processed petabytes of data and spent unthinkable amounts of computer processing time to render a still rather 'blobby' image - remember, the images was taken at radio wavelengths. The team threw away tonnes of noisy data and chose the best data sets to use. Showing the raw data for public consumption would be fine, but _very_ boring for average person (and most astronomers.) The BICEP2 debacle proved invaluable about how *not* confuse everyone.

Such that it looks like real data. So there is a spatial sense to it. The short clip I saw seemed rather unconvincing. So, we can't really be sure it's an image of a black hole. We only have pieces of the big picture. We're trusting that the algorithm is correct with the other (approximately) 70% of the big picture... but it could be terribly wrong.

Sure, you can look at it like that. But, this small part can lead to larger discoveries and may serve as the reason space exploration gets more funding etc.
