Guy you are such a lovely bloke, don’t ever change.
I fitted tyres for 10 years and I've never seen that trick with the tyre inflator and a steel rod to keep it in place, Genius!
With the added bonus of not being anywere near the bugger if the split rim does fail.
Even with a solid rim you don't need any 'specialist' equipment. A couple of big lever bars, steel wedges, a sledge hammer, Some muscle and you're good to go.

When I was in India I was completely overwhelmed. Such an assault on your senses. The colours, the smells and the heat. Still to this day the most incredible and memorable place I've been to!

I used to ride across India for past few years and conducts high altitude motorcycle expeditions, its crazy for a a person whom comes from a well organized trafic system but its fun too. As a rider from a 3rd world country, its a dream inside a drea. to watch isle of man tt or to participate 🤟

I have to ask, why the hell would you admire Hammond/May/Clarkson? They are just TV presenters who go round the world on paid-for jollies. Guy talks the talk and walks the walk. I couldn't even mention the other three in the same sentence as the word "Legend".

Even though it was well over 60 years ago now I remember fitting split rims here in the UK and jumping every time they went bang!

It depends what you want to see if you want to see mountain,jungles, beaches we have that all also have some rich people and poor people also we don't say that we are developed or rich but all of us are not living in slums like most of media portrait us and it's nothing wrong with 3rd world country as long as you work for better future Humans are same everywhere

We still use split rims in new zealand im a fleet man fit them all the time never had a ring pop and i never worried about it i treat them like any other tyre get the job done fast 0 safety

I wonder how many "Tyre fitters" get killed or maimed by exploding tyres when split rims fail with no protective cages?
Idk, where I'm from in india, never heard of such tragedies. Though injuries may happen occasionally.

I was looking at all the life..........I was hoping (obviously unsuccesfully) that my comment would point out, that people who live next door to rubbish dump, weld without a mask & scorn safety footwear are hardly likely to wear a mask to go to the shops & clammer for a vaccination for a respiratory illness with an over 99% recovery rate......................... And the story it told of a river that flowed, Made me sad to think it was dead!

Split rims are not legal in Canada as well. We have the nerve to complain about things in Canada but should appreciate more for what we have.
We used split rims on Grader tires in a tire retread shop in BC. No cage, 250psi air to force the new tread into the steam heated mould. All the WCB inspector cared about was that we were wearing steel caped boots :-(
We had a small F mould let go once, it blew a hole through a cinder block wall!

And I was looking for some kind of secret technique to mount tires myself. I plug my own nail holes, but I guess it's still going to be $30 - $50 for a mount and balance at my local tire shops.

India is great for women. Very equal opportunity employer. Very PC and modern. They certainly could teach our 60 y/o harridans a thing or two here in the west!

Not equal at all. India has a shortage of women due to infanticide of girls. Yet families who keep their girls are then bankrupted by dowries to the groom's family. The idea that the groom will take care of the bride's family rarely pans out. So the dowry is just an exhorbitant fee to get rid of a girl based on false assumptions. Think about it, the women installing tires, she basically went against the culture and proved that she is not a burden to anyone. Her husband's family let her live on only 12 quid a week is an example the dowry was no guarantee of financial support.
