Nice to see that these systems are not plug and play , there's a learning curve . Yes cranking up the main is a pain but we love our simple fully battened main . We installed a below decks captive winch to take care of the lifting . Great video , looking forward to more.
Hi Nick. Good Question, but the answer is complex and mostly no. We have dug deep into all this over at our site in a three chapter series covering all the options (requires membership at $36/year to read) and starts here: www.morganscloud.com/2022/10/09/in-mast-in-boom-or-slab-reefing-convenience-and-reliability/
@@Morganscloud Hi John, I am a member, and I have read most of the comments on your site. I see how Paradigm may have pulled this off. I also read how Rob Gill claims to have had success reffing downwind. Rob gives credit to John, I assume Kretschmer, for sharing a downwind technique. I haven't seen Kretschmer's remarks. I'm interested in how downwind reefing might work on the Outbound 46, given that so many of these hulls have the Liesure Furl system.
Hi Nick, Let's chat about this in the comments to the relevant chapters at AAC then. You will find stuff about what John K told me about that there, short version: yes you can do it but it's ugly, and slab is way better and safer.@@dropthatfone
None of you seems to cover the real issue. I have a sudden Gail and need to reef now. My boom will never be in the perfect condition or straight. Now what?
Hi Mordalo, Good question. That's one of the big problems with in boom reefing. This video is only a small part of the work we have done on sail handling options. Most of said work is in our online book here: www.morganscloud.com/category/rigging-sails/book-sail-handling-rigging/
Lots of wind noise, hydraulic winch alarms loud beeping, boat operator not wearing a mike, hard to understand when not facing camera. I am sure the hydraulics cost more than my boat which only has a manual in mast furling. I would say video is of limited value.
I would agree. Video is not our primary focus and this was only part of a deep dive into mainsail options starting here: www.morganscloud.com/2022/10/09/in-mast-in-boom-or-slab-reefing-convenience-and-reliability/ And inspired by this tragedy: www.morganscloud.com/2022/08/22/lessons-from-a-tragedy-at-sea/ The full series requires membership (US$36.00) to read, but you can read our take on the tragedy at the above link for free.

The bip bip would drive me crazy
Me too!
I’m wondering how the boom height/angle indicator is rigged. I’m assuming that when the yellow tapes are aligned that is the correct height/angle.
Is there any possibility of reefing an in-boom main sail when sailing downwind?
