  • An unfiltered look at my travel day experience from Aberdeen to Stockholm. I still haven't found a way to deal with 6am flights, they kill me every time and I end up being awake for far too long...

I don’t pretend to be a travel expert, but I love what I do and would be honoured if you came along with me. My channel focusses on the wide-eyed wonder and excitement of finding somewhere new, and my genuine reaction to it. You may not get a history lesson in my videos, but who knows, you might pick up some useful travel tips along the way, add a few destinations to your bucket list and hopefully be entertained by what you see. Thanks for watching, it means a lot to me :)
I do ALL of this myself. Planning, filming, editing, promoting, all with a weekly upload schedule, so please understand not every video will be an epic adventure. But my pledge is to always do my best in any situation and KEEP THE CAMERA ROLLING :)

    FAQs:
    WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I was born in Glasgow but have lived in Carnoustie, Dalgety Bay, Stonehaven, Edinburgh, Montrose, and further afield (Salamanca, Spain & Devonport, New Zealand)
    WHEN DO YOU UPLOAD?
Saturdays at 10am Scottish time. Occasionally a bonus midweek video will pop up (in which case, likely to be Tuesday at 5pm)
WHY IS THERE A DELAY BETWEEN TRIP AND VIDEO APPEARING?
This is a result of doing all this myself I’m afraid. Editing takes time and I also like to schedule videos a bit in advance in case of any problems/illness/cancellations etc. Keeping my uploads appearing every Saturday morning is important to me, so I don’t want anything to get in the way of it. Also, I occasionally need some time off to recover from trips!
    WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE?
I film with a GoPro11 and my iPhone12. I edit on iMovie and use epidemicsound.com for music. I also use canva.com for thumbnails etc. I also have a DJI Pocket 3 (bigger sensor) for nighttime, although I’m still getting to grips with it.
WHY DON'T YOU SPEND LONGER AT DESTINATIONS?
The usual suspects I'm afraid - time and money! Hotels especially these days make my eyes water like a true Scotsman. Also my weekly upload schedule means I need to keep on the move.
    WHERE'S ALICJA?
Alicja will feature whenever possible, but she has her own life and a proper job so it can take a while for our schedules to match up. Trust me though, I prefer it when She is there too!
DO YOU PAY FOR YOUR OWN TRAVEL?
Yes I do. I've only ever accepted a complementary ticket as compensation for a previous problem. All my opinions are frank and honest reflections of travel as I experience it.
    WHY THE ADS?
It's my income, I can't do this for free. Notice I don’t have mid-roll ads though!
    CAN I CONTACT YOU?
I used to list my email address but felt bad not having the capacity to respond to everything so took it down (and I got a LOT of spam so missed many genuine messages along the way).
HOW CAN I SUPPORT THE CHANNEL?
Watching my videos is of course support enough, but if you'd like to support further, I'll pop links in here for Paypal and Patreon. All kind donations are super-appreciated and will go 100% towards future filming trips.
    DO YOU ACCEPT SPONSORSHIPS?
I don't like to upset the flow of my videos, so I don't even include mid-roll ads anymore (at significant loss of income to myself), so I prefer not to include sponsorships either. I'm open to a small slide at the start/end of each video, but I don't want to get into talking about products, it's something I don't like as a viewer myself (especially as a viewer who pays for TH-cam Premium). So it's probably a polite no, although all of this goes out the window if you offer me something which can give me the chance to make a video for my audience that would otherwise be impossible.

One small story regarding those lockers at Stockholm Central station. Around 10 years ago I used those lockers to store my passport, wallet and laptop. But without realising it, I closed the wrong locker. So it was available for anyone to use it. So when I returned I found the locker empty. And the staff there were as puzzled as to why my locker was empty. So I had to report my passport and laptop missing and arrange an appointment at the British embassy. A few hours later, to my surprise I received a phone call from the police to tell me my items were handed in to security.
And that a kind Swedish gentleman had handed them in.
I will be forever grateful for the actions of that man. Who had left an even greater impression of the people of Sweden.

Steve - I'm surprised that no one is recognizing the world-renown Scottish travel blogger while on the hunt. What would you say is your favorite and least favorite [budget & regular fare] airline? Do you prefer the budget-style because of your frequent TH-cam channel-related trips and / or catching your discount specials as you can? I like your mix of travel-style reviews and wish I was shadowing you on them. They are well received, and I find them relaxing, eye opening and enchanting. Thanks so much for taking me along.

    Dear Steve,
Thank you very very much. I love flying but I can't do it anymore. Your videos looking out of the window, without commentary or music, only the ambience sound of the cabin and the whining and humming of the turbojet engines, takes me there. Brings back fond memories of long ago, flying with my mom and my dad.

Your style of travel is what I choose when I can travel, and I've learned a lot about how to do that in the UK and Northern Europe from your videos. @@steve-marsh Lovely! If you do, it's quite conveniently located on the main railway connection between Stockholm and Gothenburg, so there's at least two dozen trains stopping there every day, and without having to do any connections.
The town's got a bit of history (Saint Elin is especially known and fairly interesting), one of the more well-known military regiments (The Skaraborg armoured Regiment), and really not much more. Most people just know it as the town they go through when travelling from Stockholm to Gothenburg, or vice versa, haha.
Anyways, looking forward to the next video! I have a suspicion where you might be heading. Also looking forward to you exploring Stockholm more thoroughly sometime. Perhaps it could be combined with a ferry trip over to Gotland, with a day of exploring the medieval city of Visby?

You've got to think about the sun when you pick your seat :P Living in the north of Finland, I make sure to pick the sunny side on winter flights!
My Dutch boss tells me that Schiphol translates literally to "ship grave", a name it had long before there was an airport. It used to be a relatively shallow patch of water, and it was infamous for suddenly rough and breaking seas that would sink ships.

I really enjoyed this video, right from the opening in St. Cyrus (one of my favourite coastal walks) to seeing the beautiful architecture in Stockholm. I also recognised the Maccies at Bucksburn but perhaps that's not so glamourous. The last time I passed through Schiphol, my connection time was 55 minutes, including the passport check! Somehow, I made it in plenty of time but I don't think my nerves could handle that again.

If you want to visit sweden, but not Stockholm specifically, Stockholm is proboly not the best place.
Firstly it's pretty pricy. Secondly the city is area vice absllutly enormous. While the population is not large in international measurement, the city area is absolutly gigantic. (Well compare to European cities).
Thirsdly, Stockholm isn't really sweden in the same way London really isn't the UK.
Where you should go kind of depends what you want to se. Göteborg is a good alternative if you want to visit a large city that still is sufficiently small so transport times isn't to large.
Area in South of sweden called Skåne is also intresting. It have a intercity high speed metro system that take you from one city to the next in minutes. The system is also integrated cross border so Copenhagen and a few other Danish cities is on the same system (Well, sort of partly, danmark is linked with the high speed metro only, the medium speed metro is not linked to denmark.m. at least not yet)
If you want a more rural visit I could recommend göta kanal, while canal crusied are absolotly bankers expensive, they also have canal biking and other activates.
If you want to go for even more of a remote setting there is hiking trails pretty much in the whole country, all the way from the mountains in the north to the coast in the south.
It's worth saying that sweden have 4 major climate zone. A wet one in the south, that typicallt don't get snow. A temperate one in a band between Stockholm and almost to Göteborg. A subartic starting a bit north of stockholm, and in the mountains in the North its tundra.
So the South part look nothing like the north part..
Sweden is basically (and was historically) three countries. Denmark in the south, norway in the North West and finland in the east.
Fun fact. Current day finland have more surface are of original sweden in 1500 than current day sweden do. Sweden have moved weat. (There was a sweden between 11 and 14 century as well.. but its kind of complicated)

the regional trains takes only 40', that's still quite reasonable, and it's cheaper as well. There's also an airport bus, which is the cheapest option, but it will take closer to 50'. Those trains are regular commuter trains, but still quite comfortable, so don't feel obliged to take the Arlanda Express. Especially if you need to get to another station in Stockholm than Centralen. The regional trains also stop at e.g. Solna (there are some reasonably priced hotels there) or Gamla Stan, which can actually save you time.

We took AX in 2017, then realised that the Pendeltag with the Arlanda Passage supplement did the job just as well when we went back in 2018. On a recent holiday to Austria (October 2023) almost every train I traveled on was packed. The reason? The 'Klima Ticket' introduced in October 2022. This costs just 1095 Euros PER YEAR and gives unlimited travel on almost all Austrian Public transport including buses and trams but not boats. (NB it is 450 miles from Vienna in the east to Bregenz in the far west of Austria. You could spend your whole life riding back and forth between those two cities for just over a £1000 per year! Contrast an annual season ticket from Woking to London (25 miles) which now costs £4070.

Hello Steve, showing how to travel to a destination makes it all the more interesting. Re Schiphol ... it's the Polderbaan runway which is far from the terminal. One airline staffer told me that Polderbaan was nearer Haarlem than to the Schiphol terminal ! As for Schiphol transit ... the airport has, ever since the current terminal opened in 1967, majored on its 'one terminal' concept. That was fine years ago but growth and expansion over the years mean that walking distances can be excessive ... clearly non-Schengen to non-Schengen is easier than non-Schengen to Schengen.

I guess you are going to Narvik, Norway on your next video, and by the way; the Stockholm-syndrome is a bit of a lie. -they did not gang up with the bank robber(yes there was only one bank robber, but he demanded ta prisoner being brought to the bank. But the prisoner could not be charged with this robbbery as long as it was the police that brought him there)
However, one of the bank tellers, a girl of 23 years of age was allowed to speak to thge prime minister, OlofPalme,- murdered 15 years later- and then she said that they should accept the demands of the robber(s), and not try to shoot them, because she was so young and wanted to live, she was angry at the prime minister, but that is only girl psychology, they are often angry at the person available to be angry at, even if that person is not to blame.....
So the bank tellers, one of who was a young man, also 23 or something, tried to make it harder for the robber(s) to succeed in their claims, they wanted 10 million USn dollars, which was provided , and a Ford Mustang and a plane. They clearly wanted to survive, but the robber(s) (I put the pluralis sin brackets, because one of them was awilling witness, not a robber, at that occasion at least)
I was nearly 14 years of age at the time, and was actually going to Stockholm the coming Weekend which worried my mother a bit. We has Swedish TV-channels , I live ,and lived, in Norway at the time, where we could follow the drama, and the clearly irrational robber, which the police got his mother to speak to him. Only thing was; it was not his mother, the police thought they knew who the robber was, they were wrong.... eventually the person who the police thought was the robber got in touch with a TV-station, and he appeared on TV, and saying that the police sucks.....then the police realized they got it wrong. Apolice lieutenant got shot in his hand when he tried to get closer to the robber(s), and then the robber(s) tetreated into the bank vault with their hostages.
This police lieutenant appeared on television with his wounded hand and stated that the hostages had allied with the criminals (ha had heard a recording of phoine call with the prime minister), and he later was involved with the murder case of the prime minister..... strange things....
However, the police used a slow soundless drill to drill o hole in the ceiling of the vault, and sent a miniature thermal camera in the pitch dark night (in 1973 this was high tec) to see where the hostages where, and seeing that the hostages were not in the nooses that the robber(s) had put them in earlier gassed the vault, and they gave up.
However, this police lieutenants (I prefer not to name him) misunderstanding of grrl psychology made for the misnomer expression Stockholm,-syndrome. today it has become something that it was not there, but that hostages take they're hostage-takers side is a phenomena that is easy to explain, if they want to live, but that did not happen in Kreditbanken. Kreditbanken amalgated later with the state owned Postsparbanken, and was later sold to the private Nordbanke, which today is part of Nordea, a bank with branches in all Nordic countries as well as the Baltics.

@@steve-marsh Yeah, there was a big derailment on the Ofotbanen railway back in December and the railway is still closed. It was supposed to open a few days ago, but the reopening was postponed due to bad weather.

Was in Stockholm a couple of years ago and was the only city where I went station-hopping just for the station decorations, especially on the Blue Line!

Interesting video as always Steve, the views at your opening shot were stunning, that is why i love Scotland ‘Rain or Shine’ that and “Outlander” “👌”

When I had to kill time for the same reason (don‘t want to spoil but I have a guess what you are up to in Stockholm) I did exactly the same walk through the city. Only that I was even more penny whise and carried my backpack all the way (and regretted it very soon afterwards). You are absolutely right, it‘s a fantastic city and the underground stations are really worth visiting.

Although I'm Danish, I can't claim to have visited Læsø but I know a thing or two. It's the smallest council in the country with only 2000 inhabitants. It's fairly flat with agriculture and fishing but also has some tall sand dunes in the north with hiking possibilities through plantations and heaths.
Because of growing tourism people are currently revitalising two crafts that are/were characteristic to the island. One is 'salt seething' where the very salty ground water from wells in the southernmost parts is heated over fire so it almost reaches the boiling point and evaporates. The result is apparently very tasty salt which is sold to Danish restaurants.
The other is thatching houses with seaweed. I don't think this exists anywhere else. At one point only five traditional seaweed houses were left but this is multiplying now. The seaweed roofs are very large and quite picturesque as it almost makes the houses look like hobbit holes.

Wow! I remember when Dyce was a couple of wooden sheds! That was in the 60’s. So much change. I wonder if there are old photos we could see.

...great travel report, Steve... how it really is... a lot of tiredness, all kinds of unexpected troubles (no Wifi in Stockholm), but also amazing air views and pleasantries on the way (snack on KLM flight + friendly & fast gate processing)... I just have a hard time these days to warm up to visiting big cities... (what a country bumpkin I've become...) 🤣 but you hinted already on not staying in Stockholm this time... so my guess is that you'll take a train to the Arctic Circle to feed the polar bears, no?!? We'll find out soon, I guess... cheers, mate! 😎🌅

Mate I am with you on the big cities, but to be honest, really looking forward to going back to Stockholm, especially as escapes to the islands look like a decent option. But YES, headed north - I can't guarantee polar bears though :D

...looking forward to both, your journey north, and also in the future a closer look at Stockholm... I don't want to sound too negative about 'cities' - they have to offer a lot of treasures, and cultural delights... its just the crowds, the noise and expense, that puts me off... but you can't have the one without the other... so I'm doing alright with it, just some wee complaining... 😊 @@steve-marsh

The words “connecting” flight make me worry! My kids helped us book our trip to Norway with a one hour connecting flight through Stockholm! With passport check and another baggage check and our arthritic knees I didn’t think we would make it to the gate in time.
Gosh, I love direct flights 😂
Great video and next time I’d love to visit Stockholm too 😊

Yeah me too! Especially as I almost always have future videos planned for the day of arrival, so a missed connection could be a nightmare!

A good tip to avoid those crazy expensive locker prices in the main station. The Konstakademien (10 mins away) has free lockers. Limited opening hours, but it was a lifesaver for me back in November.
