    Four months ago, we visited the offices of Glowforge, a company developing a new kind of 3D laser printer. The Glowforge simplifies laser cutting by moving software to the cloud and making use of smartphone sensors. That both lowers the price and allows for incredible user features that makes the Glowforge extremely easy to use. As Glowforge readies to launch, we check in to check out the final product!

    • @jeffreyblack666
      @jeffreyblack666 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Phil Verhey A laser is not a physical object that can be printed. When you print onto a piece of paper, you are printing ink and having it left behind. When you print using a 3D printer, you are either printing a binder, the material itself, or otherwise fusing the shape together to produce a 3D shape.
      It doesn't plot data points. Data points aren't appearing on the object.
      What this does is cut (or engrave). At best you could claim it as a laser mill.
      Printers build up. Mills cut down.

    • @jeffreyblack666
      @jeffreyblack666 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So now you try and bring up imprinting when we are discussing printing?
      If they call it a 3D printer, they are wrong.
      Being capable of doing 3D designs doesn't make something a 3D printer.

    • @jeffreyblack666
      @jeffreyblack666 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Phil Verhey Where I am from High school English classes mainly focus on literature studies, not actual english.
      Do you know what synonym means? Similar meaning, not same meaning.
      If they were the same you would has said stuff like this:
      "when celebrities or kids put their hands in cement, they PRINT the texture & shape of their hands at the depth applied"
      The fact that you chose to use imprint rather than print shows that you know there is a difference.
      Forget ignorance, dishonesty is bliss to the likes of you.

    I'm generally pro-cloud, except for cases that involve otherwise dedicated hardware. Example: I have a 3d printer that uses a cloud-based slicer and has closed, proprietary firmware. The French company apparently folded (without any notice) and so the printer is only partially functional now. Dedicated hardware that relies on an external service to function will simply not last decades like dedicated hardware with on-board intelligence does.
    Another example: there are hardware synthesizers which require the computer to program. Synthesizers that were made in the 70s are still in use today. Those 90s and 2000s synthesizers which required computers are no longer usable without having a dedicated Windows 98 or Pre-OSX system in your studio.
    Unlike computers, tools and instruments tend to have a longer usable life, even when they've been leapfrogged by newer technology. Externally hosted services are ephemeral as are companies. To get the top of line model, it's $4500.

      +Pete Brown My point exactly. My 3D printer will work in 10+ years because the whole toolchain is open source. I can maintain it myself. If services are in the cloud, I don't have access to the code and I can't fix problems.

    • @fstemarie
      @fstemarie 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +Pete Brown Putting such simple things in the cloud is the stupidest thing ever. The minute I know it needs the cloud, it's worthless to me for exactly those reasons. Just give me open sourced software I can run on a laptop. That's it. It's like they use the cloud because "it's cool"

  • @TomBurke4015
    @TomBurke4015 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    My theory about the "cloud software" bit is that they're trying to forestall cheap Chinese clones. Glowforge can authenticate the machine connecting to their software, so a clone would be crippled. If so, it's a doomed strategy, because lots of people could stick a cheap camera or two on a sub $1K laser cutter and add some simple software to follow lines. That's what most people will care about, and they won't notice subtleties like the fact that the Glowforge has autofocus (unlike most cheap laser cutters) or a nice, sharp TEM00 laser. The only benefit the buyer gets from these software shenanigans is to help keep Glowforge in business for a little longer so their cutter doesn't get bricked quite so quickly. Glowforge says they're going to "release the firmware" (presumably, they mean the source code), but only some teeny tiny percentage of the machine's buyers would be able to make any use of that when the cloud part permanently goes down (which, make no mistake about it, will happen sooner or later). For everyone else, they'll have an expensive table decoration unless someone starts selling replacement software (probably should have kept that idea to myself...).
    I've already been burned a couple of times by buying into hardware that requires remote server ("cloud") support--never again, except for those cases where it's obviously necessary, as with cellphones.
    The good thing about Glowforge is that they'll get everyone thinking about line-tracking laser cutters, so before long there will be a flood of add-ons for existing cutters that will provide this function, even if most of them are crap. For example, the huge tattoo industry could be a major consumer of these things ("Want me to turn your ink tattoo into something really badass? Stick your arm into this box.").
    I hope Dan Shapiro comes to his senses and finds a fix for this serious flaw in his business model, because he seems like a sincere and intelligent guy and I'd truly like for him to succeed. The world needs a product like this, and if you can believe their marketing it looks like Glowforge has the wherewithal to pull it off. But they aren't getting a penny of my money until I'm convinced that I will truly own the product I'm paying for.

    i wonder if the people who usually make those machines... the stupidly complicated ones... see this and will say
    "oh man why didnt we think of this" or "ah shit they figured it out"

    • @psychobotLoL
      @psychobotLoL 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +Hunter Rodrigez Yeah but something just designed is always bad.
      Ofcourse good designer can make good product in first try. But in second try it will always be better.
      Just look at stuff around you. Everything evolves. Someone created something. People were using it. Found what is missing. Basing on that knowledge they upgraded it. Then again.
      Maybe they made it perfect but it is possible than in about year or two they will find next way to make it even easier in use and they you will say same thing. You just doesn't see now what is it missing. Some already did and you can find their thoughts above in comments.
      So they will probably say "oh man why didnt we think of this", but glowforge can say it in the future too.

    • @HunterRodrigez
      @HunterRodrigez 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      DrawDeath Dude we had this technology for decades and yet most machines like that (like automated drills for example) are still based on a stupidly complicated programming language instead of a visual interface...
      And if some designer who just thought it would be a cool idea to make this simpler can do it you can bet your ass that the people who make those machines can do it too... They can probably do it even better

    • @psychobotLoL
      @psychobotLoL 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Love the idea at first glance... Whats to prevent this thing from becoming a useless brick when they potentially go under? Or they could decide that they no longer want to put money in keeping the servers up-to-date as tech on the computer or iPad changes? It requires internet access to use, which is not big as long as they are still around. No thanks. That is why the more expensive ones are better. This is making it more of a potential disposable piece of equipment. It still costs to much for it to potentially be useless after 3 years. ROI is still important and this is very risky.
    Love his obvious excitement about it. Seems to really have a passion for it. But until I can do it all on my local computer like with my 3D printer I am not going to buy into it. Cloud is not the answer for this kind of tech.

    I was a co2 and Nd yag laser technician for 20 years. I interned at Trumpf and worked for Coherent in various roles. Worked on co2 gain cells from 10w up to 2.5kw laser systems. Q switch, raider and pulse systems as well. We mad systems like this back in 1998. Its nice to see you can buy a compact laser system at a great price point. I will be sourcing components to build my own ;) but what a great deal man! P.S. If you need any Laser Techs, Let me know and I will forward my resume.

  • @RobertShaverOfAustin
    @RobertShaverOfAustin 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Glowforge looks interesting. The problem is it requires that the laser printer access software on the Glowforge server every time you use it. If you can't reach the server, if they shut it off, if they go out of business then you have an expensive hunk of machine that no longer works.
    This is exactly what happened to the customers of Revolv when Nest bought them. They decided it was too much trouble to keep the Revolv servers operating.
    So beware any system that requires software-in-the-cloud to work. This is especially true of startups.

      I never said I expected it to last forever. The issue is being able to use the printer while the internet is down or unavailable.

    It's refreshing to see a laser being applied to art instead of predictable 'futuristic' stuff; not to make anything 'better' by making silly over-enthusiastic designs, but to make the hard work of good design and quality materials easier, more precise, more economical, and of course more accessible.

    Heck you can get a 40W 12x8 laser engraver shipped from the US for less than 400. Smaller area but enough for most projects, and for the savings, I'd live with manually focusing the laser. It also works if you lose internet ;)

      Here is a quote from Dan Shapiro (Glowforge Founder and CEO) in the Shapeoko 3 forum from a couple days ago on the topic of the cloud based solution. . .
      "We’ve heard a ton of amazing feedback from our community in the 12 or so hours since Glowforge has launched, and one question stood out to us: what if you buy a Glowforge, and something happens to us?
      This came up both in person at MakerCon while we demo’d the unit and online, particularly in the lively discussion on Hacker News. Because Glowforge is powered by the cloud, it’s an important question. Long term, we’re working on some cool solutions, but short term, here’s a commitment we’ll make right now: When we launch Glowforge, we’ll also release a copy of the firmware under GPL.
      Glowforge firmware is user-flashable, so you’ve got both an escape hatch (if something happens to us) and a platform to experiment with. If you buy it, it’s yours - you should be able to do what you want with it."

      +snajperSLO What would be nice is if they also release the software they have on the cloud so you can do it yourself, so if they do go out of business, or you don't have Internet, you can set it up yourself, using your computer (or a raspberry pi) as the cloud.
      The firmware itself will just let you try and reverse engineer something, and there are already plenty of options out there which will likely work. It lacks several of the main selling points of this.
      And appealing to cost doesn't help, as running a cloud service costs money, money that must be paid continually to keep the service running. Letting the user run it on their computer costs nothing. putting dedicated hardware into the unit will cost a bit, but in the long run, likely not as much as the cloud.
      As there isn't a subscription, the cost of the printer must be significantly increased in order to fund the cloud.

      and the talk about making it cloud based so its cheaper to build is just bullshit . instead they should just go ahead and give you both cloud and standalone software so u can use it how you want to use it

      Cloud is the MOST exciting piece of this. Crawl out from under your prehistoric rock and see how Amazon is using "the cloud" as evidence on how the constant refinement of abilities is being done without having to push updates to people and product and install/upgrade.
      In addition to that, Glowforge has already said that an open source, public domain version of their service will be made available. Do your research before trolling misinformation.

      Yes, the cloud is the most exciting part of this. They're doing some really cool stuff there! In fact, they're doing *everything* there. It's also the most likely thing to turn your cutter into an expensive brick when this company decides it costs to much to keep supporting it, they close up shop, or they're sold to a larger company with no interest in supporting older products. All of these things have happened before.

    • @phatfish001
      @phatfish001 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Toni Lähdekorpi The only sensible decision with regards to their software stack was that it is actually a web app, rather than forcing anyone who wants to use it to buy a fucking iPad. Based on what had gone before i was genuinely surprised.

    •  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +phatfish001 web app maintained by them. What if they stop maintaining it for any number of valid reasons?

    • @calebb.381
      @calebb.381 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Toni Lähdekorpi I don't think that is as big an issue as you might think. If for some reason Google stopped doing cloud hosted computing, you could still take the virtual servers and move them to a different provider (Amazon, Microsoft, etc.), or Glowforge could work up to hosting their own servers if they started getting big. Cloud hosting is very flexible and will be around for the foreseeable future.

    •  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Caleb Brant I wasn't talking about the hosting itself (I'm a sysadmin...), but rather the company.
      If the company owns all rights to the software running in the virtual machine, containers or whatever, we can't use it if they stop supporting it.
      The only option in that case would be to either for them to release it for the public to use on their own servers, or for someone to reverse-engineer everything and recreate it.
      Not supporting old hardware and software is very common these days. It even happens with random consumer electronics.
      For example, Philips stopped manufacturing a HEPA filter for my vacuum cleaner after just a couple of years. Nobody is even selling a compatible filter...
      The same happens with software.

      +Granite The primary principle is to cut out 2D shapes that are used to create 3D objects as they did with the motive. Also the laser can cut 3D patterns in materials. They didn't even talk about it during this video. Keep in mind, however, you are dealing with the thicknesses of the materials you are cutting so you aren't going to cut a sphere or cube out of a 1/8" sheet of ply. It's mainly for adding decorations, text, etc.

    Also what is up with their laser continiously causing flames? That's not actually normal, looks like it has a huge kerf. How are you going to get replacement grids? There's a reason lasercutters have large air filtration units and cooling circulation, they are dangerous machines (Seeing an open laser tube is not a nice sight). What magically makes this unit not need any of that? Where are the toxic gasses going? Even WITH air filters it still needs to have an escape, you can't just keep building up and circulating such gasses. Drawing on the material is a software function, but not even illustrator does vector translation from drawings perfectly, so why would this software do? Why is there no way of just running it locally? "It allows us to make it better over time" Or the opposite: Once you go bankrupt your machine is USELESS because you can't run it. "Fixed Alignment" as a feature? Adjustable alignment machines also are factory calibrated, but ANY machine will EVENTUALLY run out of calibration when moving or being involved with heat. Not being able to calibrate it just means it will slowly lose accuracy, rather than just being able to be adjusted. This had promise, but way way way too much seems to be based on gimmicks, fancy design rather than a purpose built tool that you can keep up and running. "People keep watching because it's cool", what? It's important to keep continious vision, things can always go bad. You have a camera built in, great, why don't you use it for more useful things such as fire detection?

    • @Chibs
      @Chibs 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    • @Everfalling
      @Everfalling 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you look at the flame it's very still. In my experience flames from laser cutting are made erratic from the turbulence of the air extraction. My guess is that they shut off the air for audio reasons. I could be wrong though.

    • @Chibs
      @Chibs 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Everfalling Good point. In fact, now that I look more closely, the whole air filtration unit that they talk about is completely missing from the lasercutter they're using. I wonder if they actually already finished the design for it...

    Put all the cloud processing into a PC and i will be a customer. The features are great. Cloud, not so much. Processing power is currently so cheap it does not need to be in the cloud. With some effort you could probably get it into a raspberry pi, increasing the price of the laser cutter with about 40US$. Cloud is great for websites, smartphone apps etc. Once you have a machine that needs to produce to get your investment back you need everything tightly connected with the least number of points of failures. Internet has the largest amount of failure points, from your own router to the isp's to all the nodes in between. I run a 1300x1000mm laser cutter and guess what all the computing power has been done on a PC. The laser just interprets some gcode. The concept is not new. The aligning is. Could probably be made as an add-on for existing laser cutters.

    I paid the full price for Glowforge Pro and I finally got the confirmed delivery date would be around March 2017, which indeed is a long long wait, it might have a lot of break edge tech. come to the market with a better spec. even more powerful than Glowforge! I really amazed by Glowforge the first time I saw it on the Web. That's why I bought it. honestly, about 5000 USD include delivery is a cheap toy for me. If Glowforge really looking for someone to test your Beta version, people like us who already paid but disappointed from you on the delivery and service would be a better choice

    That is one cool machine! Looks like a cool business opportunity for those who have $4,000 to buy one right now. There are so many specialty areas a small business could cater to with something like this. It brings physical productivity into the office at the click of a mouse! Like with customized T-shirts, you could offer customized cell phone and device case designing.

    It would be very cool if you could tap into the cameras used for registering your print bed for timelapses

    My sister would kill for this. She does water jet cutting for making custom gaskets (and whatever else she sneaks in), but those are big machines not suited to her little house -- or budget. This would be perfect for her.
