    I've never seen past my own disgust long enough to truly consider the pain and heartache Hubbard inflicted on people. His own family though? It's all so hard to fathom.
    What a story teller! Mr. DeWolf may have inherited that talent from his forefather. But he uses it to improve the world around him, not to deceive others or damage them!

      +ToryMagoo44 So this is for real? I mean, this is no play, man is telling the truth? I see that you know him, so I ask you weather some parts or all of the story is fiction? Or it's true? I am stunned, it's so powerful.
      Here in Balkans we still keep the art of storytelling, and the truther is the story, the stranger and stronger it gets. It's the stage that confuses me, I doubt that from the stage I've ever heard the truth:-)

      It's probably not as hard for him with this one as it is his life and that of his family. Most likely based on many family stories and family discussions. But yeah i was thinking the same thing as he put so much emotion, it was like he was channeling the story.

    • @Quagigitymire
      @Quagigitymire 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When it's not a monologue to you, but rather a true tale of your life, the life your father lived, and the legacy that has cursed the family after a con-man relative created a cult that has managed to blossom into the fucked up so called religion we today know as Scientology it's most likely as easy as repeating the ABC's.

    As far as origin stories go, this one is pretty dark. Sad and horrifying that it's true, too.
    L. Ron Hubbard was a mediocre writer (I barely survived "Battlefield Earth" back in High School) and, by the sounds of it, a really awful human being.

    • @Hankusb
      @Hankusb 10 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      David Rust - you give him WAY too much credit as a writer. Battlefield Earth was utter trash! L Ron Hubbard had no story-telling talent at all as a writer and wrote wildly unlikely tales with little or no actual character development. I had a friend who got hooked on Scientology and poured all of his money into it, destroyed his marriage and I completely lost track of him - he just disappeared somewhere. Hubbard was a truly despicable man!

    • @davidrust3169
      @davidrust3169 10 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Hankusb - Well, I survived "Battlefield Earth" but found it odd that you could literally (and I mean that as in actually, for reals) pull out about 500 pages from the middle and not effect either your reading comprehension or the pacing of the story. The rough concept? Sound. Even interesting. The story-telling? Dreadful and padded. He was an okay story-teller but a poor writer.

    • @ishtarian
      @ishtarian 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      First: Don't judge Hubbard by the later writings bearing his name. I agree, these are complete drivel. But among the plethora of pulp nonsense he wrote in the earlier decades of the twentieth century, he did write some things which are actually quite good. Had he remained a pulp writer, he might not have been a household name, but those who love the pop writing of that era could easily hold him in respect. Pity he didn't take that route.
      Second: Take a look at the biography of Robert A. Heinlein, who knew Hubbard from his early days. Even then he was scarcely what one could call trustworthy as a human being, and Heinlein soon soured on him. He was not alone.

    • @skidancin
      @skidancin 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Despite my general disapproval of organized religions, this one started as a "science of the mind," and much that he wrote in that vein and the vein of philosophy is quite lucid, well-informed, and I think, quite correct (a hallmark of a good con). If only he'd not created a church and hyped his methods indicating unrealistically grandiose results, his ideas might be helping more people (rather than just failing to create perfectly "clear" people) today.

    Is any faith that threatens you with punishment if you question its tenets or speak the truth any less evil? The argument of degrees of compulsion is moot if, at any point, a person remains out of fear rather than faith. I would argue that using the threat of losing one's family due to excommunication is more fundamentally evil than the threat of lawsuits.

    • @skidancin

    Wow, so much greatness in this, but personally what I found to be most appealing, to have the most truth and relevance to society and mankind as a whole, was when he said "if you don't have facts, all you need is faith". So true, yet so absolutely ignored by countless people of all races, colors, and nationality. Self imposed ignorance, the most important requirement by followers of myth and superstition.

    Enjoyed your poems. And your unique word choices enhanced the poems emotional impact and kept me engaged throughout.
    I’m a poet specializing in Japanese forms: haiku, tanka, haibun, kyoka, senryu. I hope you don’t mind me sharing a tanka and my haiku, a tribute poem to Bashō’s frog with commentary by the late AHA founder and poet Jane Reichhold who considered my Basho haiku among her top 10 haiku of all time. What an honor.
    Here’s the Bashō poem and commentary:
    Bashō’s frog
    four hundred years
    of ripples
    At first the idea of picking only 10 of my favorite haiku seemed a rather daunting task. How could I review all the haiku I have read in my life and decide that there were only 10 that were outstanding? Then realized I was already getting a steady stream of excellent haiku day by day through the AHA
    forum.
    The puns and write-offs based on Basho's most famous haiku are so
    numerous I would have said that nothing new could be said with this
    method, but here Al Fogel proved me wrong. Perhaps part of my delight in this haiku lies in the fact that I agree with him. Here he is saying one thing
    about realism-ripples are on a pond after a frog jumps in, but because it refers back to Basho and his famous haiku, he is also saying something about the haiku and authors who have followed him. We, and our work, are just ripples while Basho holds the honor of inventing the idea of the
    sound of a frog leaping is the sound of water
    As haiku spreads around the world, making ripples in more and larger ponds, its ripples are wider-including us all. But his last word reminds us all that we are ripples and our lives ephemeral. It will be the frogs that will remain.
    ~~
    And my tanka:
    returning home
    from a Jackson Pollock
    exhibition
    I smear my face with paint
    and morph into art
    ~~
    -All love in isolation
    from Miami Beach,
    Florida,
    Al

    James DeWolf: Každá rodina má svou černou ovci. Naše černá ovce z matčiny strany byla zároveň pastýř, který zotročil své vlastní stádo. Král podvodníků, muž který ze sebe udělal mesiáše, i když se nikdy nenazval bohem. I dnes v noci jsou jeho slova vyrývána do oceli v titanových kapslích v protiatomovém krytu kilometry pod zemí. To aby když celý náš druh vyhyne, jeho slova přetrvala. Nikdy nebyl předmětem hovoru na rodinných setkáních u stolu s dětmi, ale byl to můj pradědeček, L. Ron Hubbard.
    Lafayette Ron Hubbard byl rozeným vypravěčem a spisovatelem sci-fi, podvodník se zlatým jazykem, který dokázal napsat knihu v jakémkoliv žánru, zatímco v hotelové hale v přízemí čekal vydavatel na další rukopis. Byl jen dalším jménem na rodokapsech ze stojanů v trafikách, kterému platili deset centů za stránku, a to až do roku 1949, kdy řekl: "Chcete vědět, jak opravdu zbohatnout? Založte náboženství."
    O rok později dodržel své slovo. Napsal Dianetiku a přeměnil tak sci-fi ve fakta, díky kterým jste si mohli za poplatek nechat umrtvit svou mysl. Přes noc se z žebráka stal prorokem, dokud svět nezačal požadovat nějaké důkazy. Ale L. Ron věděl, že když nemáte fakta, musíte je nahradit vírou. A tak proměnil svou vědu v náboženství a tak se zrodila Scientologie.
    O pár let později přišel na svět jeho syn, který přežil raný pokus o potrat, nedonošený, vážil sotva jeden kilogram. Jeho otec ho opustil v honbě za slávou a bohatstvím. Teď se objevil, aby se účastnil rodinného podniku, To byl můj dědeček, L. Ron Hubbard junior.
    Se jménem a ryšavou kšticí po svém otci se junior stal pravou rukou svého otce, jeho věrným učedníkem a následovníkem. Pomohl mu vybudovat církev. Roky mu trvalo, než si uvědomil, že je jen dalším jeho pohůnkem. Se znalostmi hypnózy a elektrošokové terapie, zběhlý v umění vydírání, neštítíc se rvaček a násilí, své zločiny se naučil skrývat za své charisma. A trvalo mu celou dekádu, než skulinami v masce svátosti zahlédl muže, který stál za tím mýtem,. svého otce, jak cpe tisíce dolarů do krabice od bot pod svou postelí. Svého otce, pálícího inkriminující dokumenty za úsvitu. Svého otce, prchajícího před soudními obsílkami z jednoho státu do druhého, zatímco junior sledoval, jak jeho rodina a přátelé bankrotují psychicky i finančně.
    Zhnusený tím, co viděl za oponou, v roce 1959 junior odešel. Jeho otec však vždy lépe rozuměl pomstě než vykoupení a svého syna pronásledoval odposlechy, vloupáními a výhružkami smrtí. Můj dědeček přicházel domů ke schránce plné fotek svých dětí, hrajících si na hřišti, úplně samotných, bez dozoru. To jako připomínku, že velké oko nikdy nespí. Zatímco všichni mí strýcové a tety byli poučeni o tom, jak zacházet se zbraní, syn byl donucen žít stejně, jako jeho otec, věčně na útěku...dokud si nezměnil své příjmení z Hubbard na DeWolf, Lež, která ho měla ochránit před tím, aby kdy znovu musel říkat pravdu.
    Když váš otec za vašeho života vytvořil náboženství, žádné slunce není dost velké na to, abyste unikli jeho stínu. Jen tenká linie odděluje proroctví od psychózy, a tak odhalený mesiáš utíkal přes hranice zemí před obviněními ze zločinů, psanec unikající vydání na lodi v mezinárodních vodách. Šílenství začínalo mít navrch nad jeho mentálním zdravím. Svou skutečnou minulost si pletl se zápletkami svých románů. Až jednoho dne zmizel dříve, než ho jakákoliv soudní síň či vězeňská cela stihla vrátit do reality.
    Junior, utopený v dluzích, se pokoušel donutit svého otce vylézt z úkrytu, aby ho přinutil napsat mu šek. A tak se soudil se samým duchem svatým, aby dokázal, že má lidské tělo. Syn přitáhl svou válku na veřejnost, seškrábal z idolu pozlátko, až zbyla pouhá rez. Junior, diabetik na smrtelné posteli s amputovanou nohou, pohřbený a zničený desetiletím žalob proti muži, který nesl jeho jméno až do dne, kdy tento muž zemřel ve svém úkrytu. Hned ráno došlo ke kremaci, díky která po něm zanechalo akorát dědictví popela.
    Církev dala synovi finální nabídku. Zadrž svůj jazyk, spolkni pravdu za poslední šek, nebo ty a tví blízcí budou postavení před život plný hrozeb a výhružek. A tak jim upsal svá tajemství a po dvou infarktech si je vzal s sebou do hrobu. Další oběť, kterou církev přestala předstírat, že se snaží spasit.
    Na Den díkuvzdání, v domě zaplaceném vlastnoručně vydělanými penězi, jeho vnukové nikdy nevyslovili jeho jméno. Byl tím jedním bohem, ke kterému se nemodlíme. Jednoho dne mě dědeček vzal ke své knihovně a ukázal mi poličku s díly svého otce. A řekl mi: Máma říká, že chceš být spisovatelem. Nevěř všemu, co čteš, ale věř všemu, co říkáš."
    Nikdy jsem se nesetkal s tím mužem, po kterém mám zrzavé vlasy. Jeho maniodepresivita je stále zamotaná v kličkách mé DNA. A když jsem byl poprvé u psychiatra, když se mě zeptal, jestli v mé rodině byl někdo s mentální nemocí (smích publika)....mohl jsem říci jen "Ano, to tedy byl." (další smích). Když jsem mu řekl, že můj pradědeček byl vůdce sekty, která zotročila mysli miliónů lidí, obvinil mě, že trpím velikášstvím. Co na to říct? Mám to prostě v krvi...
    Byl jsem, potají, na jedné životopisné výstavě L. Rona Hubbarda v Hollywoodu. Jeho nejnovější oběť mě tam vedla na okružní jízdě životem, který nikdy nevedl, všechny zmínky a stopy mé rodiny z něj byly vymazány. Tento učedník nikdy nepozná dědictví lží, které moje příjmení nese. To příjmení-DeWolf-byla jen zástěrka, která nás měla ukrýt před jeho skutečnými dětmi, před armádou prázdných, kteří mě zdraví na stanicích metra s e-metrem v jedné a testem osobnosti ve druhé ruce. Ptají se mě, jestli jsem někdy slyšel o L. Ronu Hubbardovi. A já mám chuť se jich zeptat: kterého myslíte? Syna, nebo otce? Boha, nebo člověka?

    If the world is just (although I doubt it), then Jamie will go much further than his great-grandfather ever did. He has real talent, and the ability to tell a true story well, instead of a poor story to lead the easily led. I hope to see more of him.
