Where he's saying he wants to live is almost always conservative, besides Traverse City, which is a toss-up. The closer you are to the water, the more lake effect snow you'll get. If you're someone that doesn't mind cozying up in the house for some time, or like to ride atv's and snow-mobiles, you'll be in heaven.
I'm a Yooper (Upper Peninsula) and I love it. It's never hit 100 in the area I live, and normal summer highs are 76-77 degrees. We average less than 3 days a year where the temperature hits 90 or above, and many years we don't have any. We do average over 200" of snow per year, which can be a pain sometimes but I still love it, and wouldn't want to be anywhere else except maybe the high mountains in the west. When I've traveled through Texas in the summer, the heat and humidity are difficult for me to stand when I'm not in a/c. My parents moved to Florida and even walking a mile each way in April there I thought I was going to die from the humid heat.

I love my state but I'm tired of so much that changed here in the past 20 years and not necessarily for the better. I traveled the entire world the past 40 years looking for someplace at least at good as Texas or better. And I found only two places in the world that are as good or better than Texas that would make me leave my home state - New Zealand and Northern Michigan. My wife and I are hoping to relocate to Traverse City, Charlevoix, or Petoskey within the next 2 or 3 years. Lake Michigan is one big, beautiful clear ocean to us without the salt water stickiness, hurricanes, sharks, alligators, and water moccasins that I've spent a lifetime dodging along the Gulf Coast of Mexico here in Texas.
DO NOT relocate to TC .... My family had a cottage there for 50 years .... its Changed dramatically ..! There population has tripled .... its so crowded now ....there are direct flights from Ney York and Chicago to TC .... The city is been taken over by Radical Woke Dem's ...!! Pete Buttage and his Husband moved on our Lake ....!! The property Values have tripled in the last 8 years .... My family and friends have relocated our summer cottages and hunting camps to Manistique-Curtis in the Upper Peninsula ... 1/3 the cost for comparable property ....Laid Back .... way less crowed and No Woke Liberals ....!!!
Winter in Michigan is very, very cold. The snow and wind chill is horrific. There is no sunshine. Summers are also very short, mosquitos are horrific. No thanks.
Please be advised you will experience an awful lot of snow in northern Michigan; much more than lower Michigan. No question the summer and fall are beautiful, but short.
Northern Michigan is beautiful, but winters are expensive. Increased heating costs, high taxes, high cost of living with low incomes (if you are not already well off) are reasons so many move out of the state. I only truly miss the falls and summers in MI since I moved to FL. Just keep in mind if you are considering a move to northern MI that your bills will be double, or more, during the winters. I've lived in the Austin area since '99, have spent a good deal of time in Northern MI, and plan to move there in the next year or so for all the reasons Geno mentioned and more. Toughest decision at this point may be deciding between Petoskey or Traverse City, but either way I know I can't lose. Yes, I know N MI isn't immune to severe weather (Gaylord had an EF3 tornado in '22), but it's not nearly as common as TX. And trust me, Texas "lakes" don't hold a candle to the way more numerous, NATURAL lakes of Northern Michigan.
Both nice spots. If you want waterfront look at Torch lake. of course you would want the east side of the lake so you get the nice sunsets. Daughter was a figure skater and skated in competition many years in TC. Godd luck with your search. Be sure to visit Mackinac Island next time in Northern Michigan.

I grew up in northern Michigan. Lived in Michigan for 47 years. I moved away 10 years ago to South Carolina. That being said I’d love to move back to Michigan. People are dumb everywhere but SC is something special.
Northern Michigan is great for vacations, but you wouldn't want to live there. Not much entertainment, few good restaurants, lack of medical care in most areas, lack of services. Southern Michigan is a much better place to live. Visit up north, but live down south.
Agreed, I live in empire Michigan, it’s horrible here , lousy scenery, high crime , homeless everywhere, garbage everywhere, graffiti everywhere, , the lakes are polluted, in fact the entire Leelanau peninsula is truly horrendous as is traverse city,this is a clear message to anyone from California, the east coast, Chicago, etc. to stay away from northern Michigan and definitely not move here, you will be making a huge mistake if you move here!!
I do see a lot of texas plates in the Ludington metroplex. 5-6 months of winter isn't for everyone especially if you get a prolonged ice storm and your power goes out for days., and N Michigan gets some very long stretches of deeply cloudy " Can't see the sun through the clouds" type weather.
Lived in CA for 60 years believing it was heaven on Earth, and it was, but politics, overpopulation killed it. Moved to greater Beaumont two years ago. There is an awful lot to like about SE TX. However, the humidity, fire ants, mosquitoes and curiously pernicious property tax regime have convinced me this is not where I want to die. MI is probably too cold for me, but Goldilocks is running out of options.

Lake Travis is a man-made reservoir. Natural lakes in northern Michigan much nicer.
