  • Welcome to the first video on my channel! This is a demonstration and brief overview of the AV set I am working on for my electronic music, using Ableton, Max for Live and Unreal Engine 4. I will be posting (fairly) regular updates on the project as I develop it further. Big thanks to my buddy Sem Schreuder (Shimla) for helping me set this up.

    this is amazing. Could Unreal parameters be triggered by audio triggers instead of midi? say, by setting a threshold on each channel and once the audio volume passes that threshold it triggers the unreal parameter?

      I believe so yes. Though you could also use envelope followers potentially to convert audio amplitude to osc

    Very, very cool. When you start putting up music videos, I'd love to see them. Would love to see what you could do with the Doom soundtrack considering that Bethesda encourages sharing it.

    I think midi data to unreal could be even better than audio to visualize. More direct control over things. Things like cc automating filter. As well as pulses from notes.

    This is absolutely amazing! Just jumped back into UE and being a producer, this is exactly where my mind is going. Curious, how are you pulling in the audio from ableton? That is the mystery for me. Again, this is amazing and beautiful.

      Thank you! I'm using m4l devices to convert midi notes and audio envelopes into OSC data. For my purposes this works better than sending audio directly into Unreal

      @@tristangieler Very nice! I use Abelton for production and could see doing so much with it, especially if it is triggering off of midi notes. Looks like another rabbit hole to dive into! Thanks!

      I'm using a Livid DS1. I like it a lot and have had it for years. They're discontinued now, because Livid Instruments sadly stopped doing stuff some years ago. I like the fact that it's laid out like a mixing desk

    This is so inspirational. Do you have any other scenes or projects using this Abelton > UE technique? Are you still actively working on this project in any way?
    I know others have said it, but I'll add to it a year later; I would pay good money for a proper tutorial on setting this up from scratch.

      thanks so much! I started a Patreon with a friend called Sem And Tris AV Club www.patreon.com/semandtrisavclub, where we share project files. we also have a Discord where we try to help people along a bit. It's essentially a basic form of the same system I used here, to get people going. I intend to finish this project and perform with it next year if I can. I've been working on an ongoing live streaming project with Colin Benders for the past months, which has taken priority over this project for a while, but a lot of the techniques have carried over :)

      @@MultiMam12345 yeah they seem to have stopped making stuff. shame because their controllers are great. The Patreon is still planned, but work has been eating up some time. I was hoping to get it up by now. We want to make sure the documentation is good so beginners don't get too lost in it

    How long did it take you to get this far?
    Can you trigger the midi off live sounds for a dynamic visual?

      The music was put together over the course of a few months. The visuals took about a month. Yes, this uses midi and audio amplitude data directly from Ableton. I had about 1.5 years experience with UE4 at the time, but have been using 3d software for about 13 years. If you want to learn more you can also check out Sem Schreuders channel. I'm afraid I can't take commissions at the moment because I'm working on about 5 projects at a time XD

    How are you controlling the variation in the blueprint? Are you using branches/switches? I'm trying to use Get OSC Message String/ Get OSC Message Integers, etc... in an attempt to drive the switch/branch but it's not working. Thanks!

      Sem Schreuder's channel has a tutorial on the basic ableton-unreal link. Everything I'm doing here is built on that principle, using midi notes as ints and envelopes as floats

      @@tristangieler Thanks for the reply! I watched his videos and a few of yours... there's a lot to learn. For now I have the particles moving properly but it's too simple, I need more variations lol. I found this max for live device called OSC Buddy (free) gumroad.com/l/UCvKN and it looks like a great option for sending the data, but I'm still not sure about how to put it together in UE4 just yet. I see you're starting a Patreon... count me in! I can't wait.

      @@gulagwarlord thanks man! Yes there are a few tools that can help you send osc from ableton, including their own Connection Kit. A birdie told me that a certain Deadmau5 is releasing a cool vst plugin too ;)

      @@tristangieler Oh man, that's awesome. I'm finding that it seems to miss a lot of notes. I'm using the switch by string for most of it, and it works pretty well, but I'm noticing a lot of missed notes and it gets all fucked up for some playthroughs. Hmmm. I'm using Sem's Max setup btw.

      @@tristangieler The notes it seems to miss the most are the really fast 16/th note wobbles. Is there a way to change the attack and release times?

      This is realtime, controlled from ableton. You could use audio inputs directly in unreal, but that's a different kind of method :)

      @@monushaw6819 yes, as audio tracks in Ableton. But I think this system works best if you use individual sources from your live set as controls, combining envelope followers and midi. You could use dummy midi tracks alongside your audio tracks, or split up the frequency bands for more precise control. There are many possibilities
