Nana even said that she was planning on making enough money to get her a nice house. As for nana and Ren, they were already happy together, but she choice music over love, hachi actually supported her singing, she even told Ren about her feelings for hachi, and from what I remember he didn't seem bothered by it. The only one who was upset about the "friendship" between hachi and nana was Takumi. People basically interpret the story however they want to, them just as friends, or lovers who couldn't end up together.

I think that their friendship was only to be the first crush where you felt something and you realize your sexuality. Not every queer character has to end up together.

I think they were building a reunion and if they were to meet again they might not jump to date each other right away because they have to now the new Nana/Hachi. I think is the return of Nana what would have push Hachi into divorcing Takumi.
I agree with you!! They need time and development to reconnect and rediscover their bond, though jumping straight into a confession and dating would be an interesting plot point to explore. I'm sure whatever Ai Yazawa has in store for them when she's ready and recovered will be the perfect continuation.

So I could remember to live my life, always choose what I know will make me happy, those two never got together, they missed out on the happiest ending, forever dreaming about the other, the moments they spent together were the happiest moments of their lives and I think this is a beautiful story, a sad one, but so beautiful and full of lessons about life!
