Maria for me is always the core of tragedy and horror in the game. Not a real person, just a construct based on a murdered woman, with a will of her own but trapped in James’ narrative, desiring love, but will only ever receive abuse. Someone solely created to suffer and then die.
Even though she's a construct made to fulfil one purpose and them die I don't think it's accurate to she she's not a real person. She's sentient and sapient which I think is all she really needs to be real. Cogito ergo sum.
Exactly, she’s not real but she’s JUST real enough to suffer and it’s heartbreaking, she’s like this echo of a dead woman, she’s ALMOST her own person but she’s made of parts of James and Mary and she can’t escape that origin, she’ll always be a “copy” to James no matter how hard she tries to be her own person.
It makes you realize how twisted silent hill really is, it created an ALMOST person with the sentience of a living person just to repeatedly kill her again and again.
@@Alex2468fulI mean, it's an entire town that draws people who are suffering in to then force them to relive their trauma over and over to feed an eldritch god with their negative emotions... so yeah, Silent Hill is incredibly twisted.
You could say, she’s born to die.
There was a fan theory that Maria was actually created by Mary as her ideal of what she wanted to be for James. It has been considered non-canon but still interesting to think about.

It makes more sense that the Town created her. She is a test.
If James fail, she will be a punishment in the long term.
While interesting, I do not believe it to be true. I don't think the town is capable of drawing thoughts and emotions from dead people. Because....well....they are dead. They no longer have thoughts or feelings to draw from. James REMEMBERS Mary, and so the town can draw from HIM.
Additionally, there is never a comparable event. The town has never exhibited the ability to manifest anything from anyone who is dead.
@Jaime Cruz 🏳️🌈 That's too clean of an answer, Team Silent pretty much left things open to interpretation with no real defined answer, I mean Maria's substory is titled Born from a Wish which can be interpreted dozens of ways on its own. I always saw it as Maria started to become self aware and in a way started to revolt against being just a creation meant to die.
Great video but I think you forgot to mention that the track that plays when Maria is killed in the hospital is called "Magdalene" (or Failing Maria)

I noticed that she also mirrors Mary in the fact that she hates being alone (she doesn't want to be alone and is scared of such and contemplates exploring until she finds someone else in Silent Hill, and Mary didn't want to be alone in the sense of she wanted James to visit more often.) Her character is so interesting.
I think Mary's situational feelings about being terminally ill were manifested in Maria as mental illness. Specifically BPD but there's [probably a bunch more diagnoses she fits.

I know it sounds strange but this game actually helped me with my depression, i actually wouldnt mind living in Silent Hill if it was real!

Silent Hill is a physical, deadly manifestation of your own mind forcing you to come to terms with your own deep trauma that you’ve either repressed or currently struggle with. i don’t think anybody would like Silent Hill.

Nice video! Mostly focuses on the religious symbolisms of Maria which is somewhat a fresh take
The myths and stories of Lilith are fascinating. Sometimes she's a demon doing horrible things to Adams children, and sometimes she's a woman that refused to be suppressed and treated as lesser than man.
Fascinating yes, but the Lilith story came out around the Middle Ages.
If compared to actual old testament scripture, OT was written a few thousand years before the Lilith story

I find James and Maria's opposing color scheme is quite interesting. There is a lil in Mary's design as well but Mary's pink is much less vibrant. Maria's clothes are a real deep vibrant red with a deep purple leopard print skirt while Mary has more of a white with pink so it's there but not as popping.

I love the scene before James fights both pyramid heads! It's definitely the best moment in the game. Plus the ost is amazing as well.

Never noticed the connotations of James' last name, as well as Mary/Maria. That gives Pyramid Head's presence a whole new mythological meaning.

Very interesting analysis, as always! :D One of the most haunting, yet interesting things about the duality of Mary & Maria, in regards to James Sunderland's psyche, is how the pair... specifically Maria served as the greatest obstacle in James' tragic life, who he pictured her as the "ideal woman" he wished Mary was, despite the fact that he sincerely loved her, and how Pyramid Head was NEVER James' tormentor but his guardian angel, one who sought to protect him from Maria. There in lies the beauty in James & Pyramid Head's relationship. ^^

Best tragic character, one only created for the purpose of another tragic character, very sad story of Maria. Interesting video, very cool! I always wanted to get the Maria ending in Silent Hill 2 after I'd got all the other endings, because replaying it without any more to unlock (just for the story), her character is very connectable and it seems a very tragic end and that fits the game very well. That or sometimes Rebirth since that is mysterious and another suitably terrible direction in a different way, however usually I would go for Maria ending. Just how great was her performance, too? Voice acting, character motion, camera framing, writing, context, and contrast.
I like these videos, although I tend to think you lay the theological comparisons on kinda thick instead of focusing on the psychological or sociological aspects of the story I get that this is your perspective of the games, and to be fair its a pretty fresh look at the games I never really knew or thought of as a possibility.
I just want to thank you for bringing so much awareness to these games. I have no doubt you’ll be a huge influence when the series gets revived

@Miss Scarecrow Maria's outfit is also heavily based upon her outfit from the 1999 Teen Choice Awards (same red cardigan, same pink leopard skirt, same boots, ect.)

Could Laura,Maria,and Mary be different aspects of the same person? In the first game we had Alessa,Cheryl,and baby Heather.
After her Laura symbolism, I am starting to believe Laura was actually a part of Mary as well as Maria.
Maria got created as what James wanted for him, to make him happy (y'know, a not so timid wife) Maybe Laura is the manifestation of what Mary wanted, to be happy (a daughter)

maria is probably the most complex character in the game and my first experience with was that of a narcissist woman who creates convincing illusions nad triggers reactions to siphon energy.

It occurred to me after watching this that Maria and Pyramid Head are the same type of creature, both created to punish/push James, they both just woke up one day and knew what they had to do, then once their job was finished were left to their own devices.
This is what I always thought, and once the human is gone, so are these creatures.
Because they have served their purpose.
If PH has only been created to torment James, then I hate the fact that they keep using him in other games/movies just to milk the franchise.
Also, I don't like how they have been changing him (more muscular, tall etc)

@@FocusedFighter777 That's exactly it. One way to look at it is that the monster in SH2 is that Red Pyramid Thing, while Pyramid Head is the sort of mascot character that has persisted.
Also James is now in DBD so we can relax and be happy about the actual Red Pyramid Thing being around.

For me it’s most satisfying to imagine Maria is a counterpart to Pyramid head… Pyramid head is frightening but he’s trying to guide James, Maria is magnetic but she’s trying to derail James and make him forget Mary

I understand how Maria was a manifestation of James guilt but what is even is most interesting is the origin of Laura. I always felt that Laura was also the manifestation of Mary and James daughter that was never conceived but maybe part of what James secretly wanted. In the entire game James never mentions the desire to have a family but what makes me suspicious is that Maria says she loved her as a daughter and wished she could have adopted her

My favorite character
When watching this, it occurred to me that Maria, the symbolism and a lot of other elements surrounding her mirror Trish from Devil May Cry. Both women are very sensual and were created in the image of another, holier woman without sex. Both women mirror Christ to a degree. When Dantè first confronts Mündus, Trish is seen on the wall in a Christ - like position. Mündus kills Trish, which could mirror Christ being forsaken by God. Both Christ and Trish are reborn after death.
It probably is coincidental, but I did think it was very interesting to note.
Interesting, the name Maria is much more "holy" in Germany than Mary or Marie.

I find it interesting that this game and silent hill is based on trauma and this was one of my dad’s favourite games.
My dad passed away when I was 15 very suddenly leaving me with intense trauma and abandonment issues which is has in return left me with my own Silent Hill kind of life. - Thank Dad. 😂
What if Marie, Maria and Laura are the manifestation of James illusion of what he wanted, he wanted his wife and he wanted her to be more life maria, Laura might be the illusion of marie manifestation when she was younger, or maybe Marie wanted kids which explains the letter
