AFTERMATH: Hurricane Harvey, VISITING MY HOUSE, Michaels House Is Under Water, Houston Flooding, EP1

  • On August 25th, 2017, Houston, Texas prepared for what would end up being the worst and costliest natural disaster in U.S. history, estimated at a cost of $190 billion+. That's more costly than Hurricane Katrina and Superstorm Sandy combined.
Bringing in 25 trillion gallons of rain water and 130mph CAT4 hurricane force winds, Houston and Texas stands strong as we prepare to rebuild a bigger and better city and state.
On Monday night, August 28th, I learned that my house had been placed on a Mandatory Evacuation List. I quickly packed a change of clothes and headed for the safest place I could think to go, my mother's house. There I waited out the last day of heavy rain.
The next morning, at 2pm, I decided I needed to see it for myself. I needed to see what the heavy flooding had done to my neighborhood and home.
My heart breaks for everyone that lost so much, but my heart is also overflowing with all the love that has been sent our way from around the country. The National Guard made such a big impact on the emergency rescue efforts, but the First Responders are who I would like to thank first and foremost. Hundreds of people with monster trucks to commercial vehicles, motor boats to John boats, jet skis to kayaks came out to do anything they could when it came to helping their fellow man. It truly was an unbelievable outpouring of selfless and sacrifice. From the bottom of my heart, I thank each and every one of you who helped and are helping in every way you can.
This is the Vlog of my first hike in to see the flood damage of my home first-hand.
Location: Concord Bridge Subdivison, Harris County, Houston, Texas
Caused by: Flooding due to the controlled release of the Addicks Reservoir following Hurricane Harvey.
    LOVE FLOATS...

The only thing that saved this guy in the video was the rubber waders, and distance from the walls where the submerged outlets are.
You are right that turning on the lights, which are above the water level, is not an issue.

No but there are enough residents on the dry side looking out for looters running them off. About 90% of the houses are mucked anyway and there's nothing to loot, just a bunch of garbage that's already being picked up by the county and gutted out, empty houses.

    • @lisaingle7268

Mandy Holmbeck also, it's not like Michael is "outing" our neighborhood or his house. My parent's street was on abc World News, and the local news was in there with camera crews. People in Houston knew which areas were flooded and which weren't. You notice looting hasn't been a big problem for our city. Who wants to loot a bunch of stuff that sat in water for a week? Nothing is usable or any good. People had to throw their entire houses away.

I understand it may seem like I was at risk. But remember, we are dealing with 110v not 220v. Also, my electrical runs are all grounded. Electricity looks for the path of least resistance. Also there is too much water for the electricity to be dangers at that distance. I would have to stick my hand an inch or less near an outlet to even feel the current. Lastly. Notice that I’m wearing think rubber waiters and boots. I’m completely isolated from the ground. If I was barefoot we could be more concerned, but even then you would have to stick your hands in the outlet to feel a shock. Yes, safety protocols are to never even risk it and turn all electricity off. But I do understand electricity and I know the runs of my house. Here’s a link that explains it simply. There are better videos on TH-cam. But this guy speaks in layman terms.

I'm late but this video is super important. I've never seen such a real reaction. Your explanation of how the experience felt surreal was spot on. I can't even imagine seeing my house under three-plus feet of water. Seeing my whole neighbourhood submerged. Watching my community being boated out of their homes. Videos like this are good. It takes away the media drama, the cash grabs, and it shows human emotion. It shows how we as a species react to our own being put in danger. You are right when you say that no matter how much we bicker and fight when it comes to disaster we will be there to pick each other up.

Clicked on your video because my brother & sister-in-law were living in the Houston area when Harvey hit. The only saving grace for them is that they knew that they were both going to retire within the next year....give or take. So in May or June they put their house on the market (in League City) not knowing just how long it may take to sell. As very good luck would have it they sold their house in less than a week for cash!!!! So they moved into a high rise apartment bldg in downtown Houston on the 6th floor. So they were very very fortunate to have sold when they did and didn’t suffer the devastation that you and so many many others die. Prayers to you and everyone in the Houston area.

If the breaker is wet, the panel underwater, or he has wet hands and no isolation from ground, then you would be correct.
I HAVE in my career multiple times had to throw breakers in wet or damaged condition, and never got shocked at all. (Did have a few blow up in the process, enough to cause a change of undies.) I was wearing insulated gloves and proper footwear in all those cases.
The greater risk was leaving the power ON in a house filled with dirty water, which is highly conductive.
