This reminds me of when I bought digital comics to support the series - they allowed for .pdf downloads and it was great! Not all purchases had the .pdfs available though, and then amazon bought the website. Pretty much immediately, the option to download the .pdf's was removed from future purchases. Then, in order to log in at all, I had to connect or create an Amazon account, which I think included giving them bank information for easier purchases. Either that or I had to download a special 'reader' application to access my comics. I'd bought a 60,- comic on the Dark Crystal that I never quite worked up the courage to read, and I never got to read it.

The big thing that hurts ownership of anything digital is DRM. You can have DRM on physical things too. DRM-free digital content is yours to keep as well. Also, an underrated reason to consider physical movies over digital is straight up quality. Of course UHD discs will give you the best video and audio quality above streaming, but I've heard normal Blu-ray does as well. This is beyond ownership though.
This is why we have private trackers and sail the dirty sea. At 47, I've been seeing his trend for a long time as well. Physical media and owning it is important to me. Like gaming collections.
But like, where even can you do it anymore? Pirate Bay? Pirate, bye. Fmovies? Effed and shut down. Even with a VPN, can't my internet company see everything I downloaded? I just made the switch from Apple Music to my own music player a few months ago after seeing one of your videos. Honestly, the experience has been very mid and inconvenient. However, I believe that is because I chose a really cheap and bad music player. Regardless, I am LOVING saving money on Apple Music each month. I don't often listen to new music, so it doesn't make a lot of sense for me to continuously pay for a music streaming service every month when I add songs to my library about once a year. Great video! I also can't stand Klarna and similar "buy now pay later" businesses. Its incredibly predatory and you're right to be worried about it. It was quite literally designed to get every last penny out of poor people. Nobody with spending money is buying now and paying later. I honestly see it as being discriminatory for that reason.
Now they're showing up on credit reports. I have good credit and check my reports monthly for anything suspicious, I saw one of the buy now, pay later purchase I made (and paid off) months ago on my last report. The crappy thing is that it doesn't actually improve your score if you pay it like you're supposed to, but it will affect your score if you don't. I hate it here.

As someone who regularly uses streaming/digital platforms, I think it comes down to convenience over quality. Something that you didn’t mention apart from your personal music player is how digital content loses some sense of meaningfulness. It comes down to force of habit, we are so used to doing something that we don’t often stop to question if there’s more to it than meets the eye

I need to change a dead battery? Done in half a minute to two minutes flat. They make cameras, batteries, screen protectors, and whatnot easily available to everyone.
not a new sentiment but subscriptions have become so ubiquitous that these days you get companies like rocket money whose entire business model is formed around canceling your subscriptions for you so you don't have to. and they're ALSO a subscription service (when you want to unlock premium features, the most important one being the "we cancel shit for you" that is the core of its ad campaign)

They could’ve kept the concrete there… Finally took us months working with several insurance agents for us to finally get them to agree to pay for it. We’ve payed hundreds of dollars a month for years of insurance we only needed once and it was 1.5 years of struggle to finally get it built. They also tried to cheap out with insert windows. Luckily my dad worked construction and he refused to let him put those in knowing they’d need to be replaced not too long after

Not fully owning something you bought has been something games have tried to push for a long time. Or at least, attempts to. Things like product codes in the box started as anti-piracy but eventually led to things like limited installations. Then there were attempts to stop systems from accepting used games. Then always online became a thing because they wanted to keep selling you things. Now in the age of DRM, there is no such thing as a used game anymore. You mentioned consumer pushback but there were lots for subscriptions, always online, microtransactions, etc etc. People were rallying against them but in the end, the shiny toys will keep making lots of money and so they'll keep getting away with it. Part of the problem is there will always be people willing to pay a little more for their hobby (games), leisure (shows) or even livelihood (adobe). So they'll keep getting away with it because we'll justify it to ourselves, and enough people will do that and it'll just continue to work.

The reason I mention this is in Europe we have a WEEE law that make it the responsibility of a manufacture to deal with any waste they produce, that includes the product a customer has regardless of if it is 2 years old or 25 years old. If you therefore make a product that is intended to fail all the time it will come back to bite. AirPods will be out and about and be used a lot, they also have batteries which can wear out, therefore you cant nessaserally expect them to last forever. By comparison how do their other products last? Many use their computers and iPads for years. (Side note, I am currently taking them to court here for misdiagnosis of fault and false repair 🤭 but I'm just saying that if you intend to sell your products in Europe planed failure will come back to haunt you)

I never want to update my iPad because another one of my favorite mobile games, RuPaul's Dragopolis, was discontinued. Sure there are other pinball style zap the bubble games out there. But I paid for all the upgrades during covid. No ads, the max amount of lives, and I've gotten gold on nearly every level. It all makes me want to go back to pirating, TBH.
These types of videos almost always do the "physical media vs digital" contrast incorrectly, when the problem is DRM and server-dependence (Kindle books that can be remotely deleted by Amazon, games that require continuous server connection to play, etc). The fact that the DIGITAL files on your iPod cannot be taken away from you is proof that media not being in a physical form is not the issue

These types of videos almost always do the "physical media vs digital" contrast incorrectly, when the problem is DRM and server-dependence (Kindle books that can be remotely deleted by Amazon, games that require continuous server connection to play, etc). The fact that the DIGITAL files on your iPod cannot be taken away from you is proof that media not being in a physical form is not the issue
