jeez, the Oddworld music is so good isn't it! Great intro you made there! How can they mess that up 10:49, yeah I agree, but imagine that someone was called Human. Yes, we are humans but there is also someone named Human haha. wtf is that ending music doing there lmao yeah original is better :)
Yeah it really is! It can be super atmospheric and creepy when it wants to be! Haha! Yeah it’s exactly the same thing! The same sign is in the original game but I would have thought the remake would have corrected it but it just ends up making the situation even more confusing! Yeah I remember when I first completed the game when it came out and the end credits music was so jarring! It has no place in an Oddworld game 😂
Here i am again. I'm exploring the channel. I am a little late but.... I have to say nice work. You're fantastic. Continue the good work When you started talking about Elum my braincells disappeared.😂 I believe that the more dark vibe and less checkpoints are better. I think back in 1997 less people had a ps1 and they were probably adults or teenagers so a more dark and hard game was ok. Now tons of people have a ps4 and most of them are kids an teens. So that's why they did it more cartoonish. In my opinion it's still great.
Thanks so much! Don't worry there will be more Oddworld content coming very, very soon! As soon as Soulstorm is out I'll be working on a review of it! Haha! The topic of Elum's name has been something I've thought about since I was very young, so I finally get to talk about it by making these videos! Yeah I agree with that! I prefer the darker tone of the original, but I totally get why they chose to go with something different for the remake. I like both versions!
Haha, yeah it definitely did! That was probably one of the things adding to the "clean" element that I was talking about. It just feels like there's lights everywhere which is amplified by the bloom effect.
The bottlecaps were useful for the Scrabs, at least on my first time through. I thought the quicksaves were nice especially for a newbie like me. The last thing I wanted to say is that lowering the gamma helps but doesn't fully fix the atmosphere. And the cartoonyness/humor fits very well, I found the original "Its loading so shadup." is fitting but it felt odd (hehe odd) but having the jokes being only in game gags feels much nicer.
I don't know if I actually ever used the bottlecaps on the Scrabs! But yeah the quick saves were definitely a welcome addition, it makes the game a lot more accessible for sure. Even doing that I don't think the atmosphere would be anywhere near as good as what we saw in the original game, but it probably at least gets it a step closer!
A few weeks ago, I was given the physical Switch version as a birthday gift. I am very happy with how it turned out. And how this one is finally not a limited release. All of a sudden I don't mind having sold my Vita version a year ago. Now all I want is for Soulstorm to get a Switch port, if possible...
@@dynastymusou8906 That’s awesome, I was actually just given the Switch version too for Christmas! I also really appreciate how they aren’t limited releases. I appreciate that limited releases exist because it’s better than nothing but it’s a bit of a pain if you’re looking for something after it’s initial release it’s most likely going to be stupidly expensive. I don’t think Soulstorm will come out on Switch. It’s being sold as a next gen game primarily so I’m not sure it would run on the Switch. There’s still a chance it might though, you never know!
So it went from feeling like The Dark Crystal to The Muppets? I like both versions but yeah, gonna miss the grunge while appreciating the quality of life stuff. So long as the spirit is retained. It was like that with the Panzer Dragoon remake. The limitations of the Saturn hardware gave rise to an atmosphere that the modern graphics can’t replicate, and yet the new style still reflects the game’s spirit. If that makes sense
That's a very good analogy! The spirit of the game is definitely still there with New 'n' Tasty but it just doesn't quite pull off what it's trying to do as well as Abe's Oddysee did in my opinion. That does make total sense, it seems there's quite a few parallels between the Panzer Dragoon remake and this game.
What's the bomb floating towards the end of the video in the first area? Is that always there? I just got the last trophy I need for the platinum (beating the game saving all mudokons in less than 3 hours) and don't remember seeing that.
If you wait in the very first area of the game for a while, the bomb will appear as if it’s looking for you. It doesn’t ever actually kill you though because it’s in the foreground. The only reason I even saw this happen was because I was messing around with the controls for ages to get footage of Abe jumping and stuff for the video! Also, well done on getting the platinum! I’ve been meaning to get the platinum on Stranger’s Wrath for ages now… I’m literally only one trophy away which is unlocked by finding hidden Rupture Farms barrels!
@@PixelPursuit oh interesting thanks for the reply! Good luck on your platinum. After watching your videos I wanted to play all of the Oddworld games, unfortunately with the PS3 store being down I can't get munch's oddysee or strangers wrath and I won't purchase an Xbox for those titles alone.
@@hxclambfan No problem! That's awesome, I'm glad my videos had a part in making you want to play them :D The PS3 store shouldn't be down anymore, they reversed the decision to close the online store so you should still be able to get them on there. Munch's Oddysee and Stranger's Wrath are also available on the Switch now too if you have one of those!
@@PixelPursuit I looked it up apparently there's a bug not showing the buy option but they are still available. So I'll have to go home and see if I can get the option to pop up.
I thought the movement and screen scrolling completely ruined the game. In the original, one tap on the directional button moved you 1 step. You could precisely gauge everything on where you needed to stand and when you needed to jump. In new and tasty I found myself trying to fiddle around edging myself forward. Why fix what's not broken just for the sake of modernity?!
I definitely prefer the original in terms of the controls. It was like every action you performed was locked to an invisible grid so it made each input very precise and purposeful. Out of interest, when you played New 'n' Tasty did you use the default control scheme or change it to replicate the original game? When I changed the controls I found it to feel a lot better and I didn't need to fiddle with movement when I changed it. The screen scrolling definitely has it's pros and cons. While it makes the game look a lot more modern and it's interesting seeing the game with a dynamic camera, it does ruin some of the more atmospheric sections because you can always see a lot more clearly what's ahead of you, whereas the original was a lot more mysterious because you didn't know what was on the next screen.
That’s a shame 🙁 I found the game pretty enjoyable even if the controls are very different to the original. Obviously not as enjoyable as the original though!
@@PixelPursuit I feel the same way honestly. I just hope in the future they learn from this and just make the oddworld games we love. No need to go all out, just be simple and it will always still be unique.
I really should play the Switch version! The controls can be altered still in the menu right? In the PS4 version you can change the controls so that you need to hold a button to run just like in the old games.
The only idea I can come up with to solve your Elum predicament is that Elum is backward for Mule. Mule likes honey and hates bees This would imply that whoever wrote that is using a stereotypical native accent or something, I don't know.
I love all of the theories about my Elum predicament! That's a pretty good one, I had never really thought about it being some kind of dialect or accent difference!
Unfortunately not, I don't think I have anything else Oddworld related to cover at this point 😅 I do have a brand new October series in the works though! It's quite a departure from Oddworld but it's probably more Halloween related this time!
@@PixelPursuit A suggestion for an hypothetical future Oddworld-relate video: R.E.L.I.V.E., the fan-made, cross-platform, open source reverse engineering of the original A.L.I.V.E. engine made by Oddworld Inhabitants for the first game(s), and the fan-made level packs.
I would actually love to do that but it would probably be an expensive thing to get started with because there's so many ports! It's been ported to some really obscure systems that I don't own as well which would make it even more difficult! :D

Excellent review, I agree with practically everything in it too. Another note: Oddysee was made on a graphic engine created by the game developers themselves specifically for the game. NnT is made on Unity, and frankly it shows: it's clunky, buggy, lackluster, uneven in style and playdoh-looking. I'm sorry for JAW, but to be it kinda looks like an half-assed attempt at a remake, made with the least possible effort and little to no love for the original material.
