I used to do top up this way, but now find non-OEM cartridges for Brother lasers so cheap, reliable and economical from a well-known auction site or the best-known mass seller (do use their reviews!) that I avoid this messy procedure nowadays. As a work horse, my _Brother HL-L2340DW_ is impressive. Currently, it's on offer online at ~55% of the recommended retail price, and non-genuine cartridges work fine with it, massively undercutting OEM equivalents. At these prices, I wouldn't lose sleep if the printer only gave 2 or 3 years use, though it might do much better.

Dust explosions happen in mines with coal dust. They happen sometimes in grain silos. They happen in a variety of special circumstances. Assuming that toner is no more combustible than ordinary household dust, which may well be the case, then your vacuum cleaner may be about as likely to explode while vacuuming up toner as it is while vacuuming up household dust, which is, of course, very unlikely. Remember that printers use heat to apply toner. So toner is not flammable like gasoline.
Thanks a million Danrfrazier! You saved me in the middle of a printing project. I just taped a small chunk of white paper with regular masking tape over the eye on the side of the toner cartridge just like you said and whalaa! Instant printing!
@Dan Frazier True, but if those particles just happen to become electrostatically charged and find their way into the motor, they can short out the electrical contacts and cause fire, electric shock, or in rare cases an explosion. (Look up dust explosion on the internet, its kind of the same thing)
Mark a couple of things could be happening here, there are blades intoner cartridges that you might have seen if you pulled the cartridge apart, the MRS blade on the cartridge holds back and allows moderate amounts of toner to be distributed while the DRblade scrapes the toner for the waste bin on the drum unit of the cartridge. if one of these is damaged than you would get leakage, if one of them is not attached at the base you could get heavy leakage
hey thanks a lot for this helpful video.......i have a brother HL-2240D which uses a TN2230/2250 and looks similar to the one shown in video.....i wanted to ask you is there a particular grade/type/brand of toner that i am meant to use and what would be the ideal amount (grams ?) to use?.......thanks !!!!
p.s : if i accidentally break the plastic cap of the toner can i just duct tape it or something?
FYI, you can just use a can of compressed air to blow the air out, into a bag-- kind of tricky to set-up so that the dust goes into the bag, but not impossible. The small amount of old toner isn't going to ruin anything, though. It is good that these printer warn you early, so you can refill safely, otherwise parts would wear out making refilling less cost effective.

Do you know if the TN 221/225 (for Brother MFC9330CDW) comes with a cap on the side that I can easily pop off with a screw driver, or would I have a to create a hole for the cartridge? Thanks.
There are special vacuums you can buy for toner. Some are expensive. I have used a home vacuum cleaner many times without an explosion. I use a HEPA type filter which reduces the amount of toner getting into the motor. But toner does get into the motor, and I am sure it is not good for the vacuum. I would not say there is no risk of an explosion, but I have not heard of this actually happening. Use this procedure at your own risk.
Where is the best place online to purchase high quality toner refill cheap? What do you think of "ink owl"? Is it required to pour out any toner from the cartridge. I don't want to waste the toner.
Why do you have to remove the old toner? Is it because it has been heated up or just because it is slightly different? Also, is this hard to do with most cartridges or are toner cartridges not like ink cartridges making it hard to refill?

on that note you also want to check inside of your printer as you may have some toner leakage going on in there as well.
At your local hardware or home improvement store. Get a short length of plastic tubing and duct tape. Wrap the duct tape around one end the plastic tubing until it is the correct diameter.
EVERY video tells about removing extra toner formal cartridge- and if so much comes out- WHY won't it still print --just asking'... and what about the low toner gear that needs to be reset ?
Did ALL that but now my prints are all streaky and the whole page is black. I can see some of the text of the letter but the whole page has a black covering as if the toner is all over the rollers. Cleaning the rollers on the drum dont fix it. What am I doing wrong please?
i am about to refll a TN2280 (2,600 yield)cartridge. can somebody tell me how much (in grams) toner powder would fill it? There are a lot of available refills nowadays that come in bulky foil packs,. i want to try them out without the fear of spoiling what may have been left if i ever bought more than what my cartridge can hold,.. somebody pls :)

Do NOT use a household vacuum cleaner for this! As someone who studies computers, I know that toner particles go right through the filter and get stuck in the vacuum motor and can cause an explosion. You need a vacuum cleaner made specifically for this.
As a fine powder, toner can remain suspended in the air for some period, and is considered to have health effects comparable to inert dust.

If you use the same toner every time it is fine. But I think it is not good to mix different types of toner

this is kinda a bull video all videos tell you emty the cart remaining toner well if its the same toner you are refilling with wi empty and people say you must use the correct toner well I have took the left overs out of all diferent carts bfore mixed them and used it as a refill and it all worked fine

Very helpful video, I just have to say that I hope you were not using your WOMEN's vacuum. Granted, I doubt it's a fire hazard, but that shit would be flying around in the air long after, unless you were using a wet vac to where water in the filter could collect the toner dust first. Rinse and repeat responsibly. Just a women's perspective. Had a good laugh at the "MAN" thing.
