One philosophical question - why play a gambit if you spend the first half of the game attempting to win back the single pawn to make material even? The whole point of a gambit is to sac a pawn for quick development or a good attack. Your play is basically the exact opposite. A bunch of defensive moves so you can…..be even?!?! You should either play aggressively with this opening or play a non gambit.
I agree. I think playing the Albin countergambit isn’t at all an opening for beginners. But if you play it: leave that pawn and go for the development and attack! !
Yeah, I made that mental observation when I first looked at his games. You shouldn't play a gambit unless you know the basic ideas behind it, or are a natural born attacker.
The Winter Blunderland is what drew me in as a new subscriber, I only like watching Chess with your sense of lightheartedness, too many poor sports who just want to win and compete, nothing better than fun chess. I only watch you and Eric Rosen.
Just wanted to throw in my two cents: I'm going to watch regardless of any extracurricular content you decide to add. I enjoyed seeing you get creative with the Winter Blunderland series and hope it was fun for ya! Totally understand how it can be a time-sink, especially during a busy holiday season. Also: nice game, Patrick! See ya tomorrow 🫡
Morning Patrick, I for one am more interested in your chess development, you are a good guy and the human aspect is important, not the gimmicks. Merry Blunderland good sir.
Although this was a quick win it masks some fundamental problems with your thinking. Because you started playing Caro-Kanns you are obsessed with the plan of Bg4 and Bxf3, weakening the d4 square. After White has fianchettoed you want to use the light-squared bishop to exchange off their bishop. So the correct moves are Nge7, Qd7, O-O-O and Bh3 in some order.
I crown you, oh noble warrior of chess, Sir Jickle. Just plain, old surgical precision from chessiwthpatrick. Nice game. "Found pretty quickly," you can add, because you're doing your puzzles. Noice!
Take a screenshot of ... Rb8 and pin it somewhere you can see it. You'll have advanced when you understand why the move is a chess crime. (As an aside, in those types of situations, you are often better off if the opponent takes the b-pawn because you'll wind up with a rook on the 7th rank and no pawn deficit. Don't stop calculating after Bxb7.)
Patrick has genuinely improved his game. I don't see him ever falling below 1400 again. His fundamentals have all just gone up. Good job Patrick! I say this as someone who's watched for quite a while, and who's above the goal Patrick has set.
He has undoubtedly improved. But this game doesn't tell us much. His opponent played poorly and Patrick was about +3 down at one point. But I agree he has improved and certainly shouldn't drop below 1400. I feel his standard is low 1500s.
@@stephenwestland942 This one game doesn't - I was more referencing the dozen games or so leading up to this. I watch almost every game. His overall play has simply matured a lot. Is he an amazing player now? No. But 1400-1500+ at this point
@@user-mg4zu7bs6i I am confused. Isn't that exactly what I said? That this one game doesn't tell us much. Like you, I watch all of his games and I completely agree that he has improved. We are saying the same thing!
I think you're right that people would, above all, like to see you gradually improve. I believe it can still happen however we seem to be stuck in very similar games, if you'd like, I've seen probably close to a hundred games so far so I could quickly highlight and help you correct the most common mistakes that happen nearly every game. We could make it into one fun episode on your channel (this would also be an interesting experiment, I wonder how many views and comments that episode would get).
I enjoyed the blunder highlights, we‘ve all been there 😂 as an improving 850, watching how your thought process works at 1400-1500 is a lot more helpful, relatable and applicable than a lot of the GM content out there, thanks for the vids!
Patrick where are your festive digs, long or short piano excursions, and so on and so on? It can't just be about the numbers, it can't.. it's about having an idea, a dream, of a new career instead of making silicon valley souvenir keychains, you can make chess progress, and receive comments from randos saying how much better their day is with your videos, you might even become so famous you can no longer enjoy simple things like grocery shopping or picking your kids up from school, due to being stopped to sign things too often and to the point you have something resembling ptsd whenever you go near people The whorled is your oyster man, eat it up and chew up that shell, and spit it in the traaash But yeah INB4 this has been a social experiment for you to get data
Oh no, I did enjoy the winter blunderland massively. Made it a game for myself how quickly I can see what the blunder was (I am that much of a beginner). Maybe keep the shorts?
Eh!!!!? I loved Winter Blunderland. And also Cagnus Marlsen. Patrick: enjoy your chess but you are a very creative and talented man as well so please showcase these talents as well. Don't become a Chess Robot!
Patrick... you have to remember we live in the land of ADHD where no one has patience and must please the minority. Maybe showing my age but I remember shows on TV that had segments and you had to wait for your favourite segment of the show. Winter blunderland is all but what... 90 seconds ? People seriously can't skip or wait through 90 seconds of intro? That's pretty mind blowing..wow.
That's so interesting that people didn't like winter blunderland. I just want you to know, I really appreciated it, it was really heartwarming and it differentiated you from other road to 2000 youtubers. It was a great creative try! Hope you get to come back to this kind of content at some point, perhaps when you're higher rated.
I admit skipping the piano parts but enjoyed watching the blunderlands :) One tip for the future though: you use only a handful of different background music and I'm noticing myself being a bit annoyed about it :)
hello patrick, used to watch you like a year back, you were 1400 then as well don't you think you should maybe learn some more opening theory and/or do more puzzles because an elo improvement of so less despite playing daily is quite unheard of
@@WetSands two weeks ago he said he wanted to mix things up to drive subscribers so that he could retire and focus on his youtube channel. less than 2 weeks into it he gives up.
Should not be allowed to abandon Winter Blunderland before Xmas. After all, he has a seemingly unlimited supply.

Good game, Patrick. Your opponent seemed a little rushed. I will miss the Xmas specials, especially the music and mood :)
Bring it back i need that festive energy!!!!!!!!
I actually liked the whole blunderland format. It was a lot of fun with the music, bullet games, blunders and Cagnus Marlsen especially!
Cagnus was something special wasn’t he?… she?…. They?
@@chesswithpatrick Don't know, but they were quick-witted, funny and they really liked chess!

Why do so many of Patrick pponents play so fast, like it isnt blitz, you can think for a bit about moves...
I liked the winter blunderland. Could you upload these as separate videos ?
I think a 5-6 second keys riff is a good intro. But the whole thing with winter blunderland ended up dragging a bit from the main quest.
I loved the blunderland stuff. I like the regular stuff, too though. So its all good

Doing mate in 2s lately?😁
