So nice to see scrums not having to set and re set (repeat loop 5 times), no box kicking and to me the game flowed far better than constant stoppages you see nowadays! It would be great if, as a one off, a Rugby match were played under the rules around in the early 80's. You've got to bear in mind the 'Steve Thomson' scenario with tackling, scrums etc - so probably very unlikely.
Also much better in those days when you could watch a televised rugby match without constantly having to put up with the 'miked' referee's voice constantly in the background. For me, it spoils it. Call me old fashioned, but wasn't it better when you just had a main match commentator and not two or more people trying to talk over each other throughout like you get now?
He was awful. He could kick from hand but was hopeless with the ball in hand. More concerned with his carefully coiffured barnet and his immaculate white shorts.
Gareth Davies had a superb game. Classy outhalf regardless. These games are much better than the modern fare. Phil Blakeway having to play at loose head!
Great to see that English grand slam pack testing Wales away from home. Odd though that the 1980 England/Wales 5 nations game seems to have been lost for posterity. Maybe the game's been censored by the Welsh devolved assembly!
@@DM-rp9ik I disagree. The game today resembles rugby league more than union. These are amateurs playing at a rather high level of athleticism in this video. Today, they train six days a week.
The game once had this flair to it that isn't there today. Today it's about defense lines, line speed, phony rucks where the opposing players don't even have to make any contact, mauls that have legalized obstruction, goal line drop outs.
Agree entirely! One remedy for fixing the game to make it proper rugby again, and not this hybrid rugby league nonsense, is to make the ball the offside line in the mauls/ruck (back foot of the maul/ruck for those not attached) and give scrum put-ins to the side going forward at mauls! Also outlaw decoy running ahead of the ball; get rid of the stupid goal line dropouts too; should be shoulder to shoulder at lineout time too; replacements only for genuine injuries as well, though able to use them all if it's warranted.
Thanks for uploading, so good to see the players I vaguely remember from my childhood.
What a delight to see JPR at 21:30, showing what he was all about - legendary. R.I.P.
True JPR. Mike slemen smashed.
Couldn't agree more ! Daft giving the score before the video !

At 6:26 JPR diagnosed Geoff Wheel's injury! Useful to have an orthopaedic surgeon on your team...
Yes - and he did so a few times during his playing career apparently
Brilliant performance by G.D.

Writing the final result in the title is a deadly sin! Who can be that stupid?
Why put the score up! Please change the byline so you don't know till the end.
Well!
The Welsh almost decended into rough-house . . . almost. But what great refereeing!

Haha you what are you accusing us of something sir.
14 men scored 2 tries to 0, terrible result.
True JPR
How come it took 30 min for the physio to show up ?
Maybe he was at home watching the game.
Dusty Hare....no second chances there eh !!!!!!
Where’s the National Anthem ?
SPOILER ALERT!
Poor standard of rugby ?? Nonsense !
Here began 8 years of total dross from England and 15 from Wales.
Some would argue that England had 8 years of dross before the 1980 Grand Slam too. There were some shocking performances from them in the 1970's!
@@JP1234815 I dont think we need to argue about that !
Wales won the Triple Crown in 1988.
So what ?

@ldfreitas9437 Portugal and Georgia would beat these guys that's how poor it is they miss at least 50% of their tackles
