Swansea Town v Preston NE - 1964 FA Cup semi final (Villa Park)
Having overcome Bill Shankly's Liverpool at Anfield in the quarter finals Swansea Town (as they then were) and the 30,000 supporters who made their way to Villa Park on 14th March had very high hopes of beating fellow second division team Preston North End and becoming the first Welsh team since Cardiff City in 1927 to make it to a FA Cup final (the swans had beaten preston 5-1 in the league earlier in the season). Unfortunately Villa Park was deluged with rain in the hours leading up to kick off, and during the match itself, turning the pitch into a swamp which certainly suited the Swans more direct footballing opponents. Despite the atrocious conditions Trevor Morris' side, sporting a tangerine strip specifically made for the game, started well and were unlucky to have a perfectly good goal chalked off for offside before the Republic of Ireland international Jim McLaughlin put them ahead before half time. The second half was to be a different matter however as with the atrocious conditions worsening Swansea conceded a penalty before a freak goal from Preston's Singleton from over 30 yards out and which took a massive deflection on the way in confirmed It was not to be the swans day.
The Swansea Town team was : Noel Dwyer, Brian Hughes, Roy Evans, Herbie Williams, Bryan Purcell, Mike Johnson, Jimmy McLaughlin, Keith Todd, Eddie Thomas, Derek Draper, Barrie Jones.
Attendance : 68,000

A Wales team facing a first ever 5 nations whitewash faced an unbeaten England side going for a first title in 9 years on a soaking wet March day in Cardiff. Few gave Paul Thorburn's struggling Wales team a chance before kick off against an England side led by Will Carling and featuring the likes of Rob Andrew, Rory Underwood, Brian Moore and Wade Dooley. That Wales upset the form book, extendi...

A short film BBC Wales produced ahead of the 2014 Commonwealth games looking at the achievements of middle distance athlete Kirsty Wade (née McDermott). Scottish born Kirsty won gold for Wales in the 800m at the 1982 commonwealth games in Brisbane and followed this up 4 years later with the middle distance 'double' winning golds in both the 800m and the 1500 meters in the Edinburgh games. The 1981 nailbiting encounter between Wales and England in its entirety. Wales, led by Steve Fenwick, were looking for revenge after suffering an injury time defeat the previous year at Twickenham while England, led by Bill Beaumont, were looking for their first victory in Cardiff since 1963. This match was to prove equally as dramatic as the previous year's game at twickenham with Wales not sc...

Extended highlights of Wales' nailbiting world cup qualifying game with Scotland at Ninian Park in September 1985. The teams went into their final group match locked on 6 points but with Scotland having the better goal difference. Wales knew they needed to win to at least secure second place in the group and a world cup play off with Australia. And after an early Mark Hughes goal Wales looked t...

All 90 minutes of Wales' crucial European Championship qualifying encounter with Yugoslavia in December 1983. Mike England's team went into the game knowing a win at a packed ninian park would seal a place in the 1984 finals in France. This win in Budapest for Mike Smith's team would prove crucial to Wales winning their group and qualifying for the quarter final play offs for the 1976 European Championships. Wales v New Zealand 1974

During their short tour of Europe in Autumn 1974 the All Blacks squeezed in this hastily arranged match with Wales. The match was played in midweek and was not a official international, despite both sides fielding full strength teams. So no caps were awarded and Wales were billed as a 'Welsh XV'. All Blacks captain Ian Kirkpatrick scored the game's only try as New Zealand ran out 12 -3 winners.

Thank you very much for this upload. I thoroughly enjoyed watching it. Greetings from Sydney Australia 😊

I notice in the England team there were two men who played county cricket; Alastair Hignell (for Gloucestershire) and Peter Squires (Yorkshire). Also, David Cooke was in the centre; is that the same David Cooke who played in the back row during England's 1980 Grand Slam triumph (and whose wife later left him for Will Carling)?

Where’s the National Anthem ?
When Gods played rugby.
The best rugby
I know Chico very well...... lovely man
Thanks for uploading, so good to see the players I vaguely remember from my childhood.
Cheating Kiwi so and so
For some reason somebody keeps activating an air raid siren while the match is being played. Don't know if this is to motivate one team, or to scare off the opposition.
Dai Duckham quality, not quite good enough to get into that welsh team
what a game it used to be. what on earth has happened???
that was when rugby was great , its a boring game now
Ah these were the days, when real commentators were 9ft. tall, real rugby men were really maladjusted individuals and referees were really gay geography teachers
Best welsh side ever...I had so much respect for them. NZ
3 minutes of injury time gone. Wales lead by 34 points to 15, England get a penalty 15 `yards` from the Welsh line and Hosen bloody kicks it for 3. It beggars belief. What was going through their heads ?? They were too far behind, but at least do it for the crowd !
Quite what possessed the sport in general to favour toe instead of instep kicking God only knows. All they had to do was watch a game of soccer to see how much easier instep was.
This is Chico Hopkins only 20 minutes of Welsh international rugby. Poor bugger. He was a superb scrum half.
Lewis. Unstoppable at 13.5 stone !!
For years folk were led to believe that Haden's 'dive' had given the All Blacks the game but as many have observed here the penalty was for an offence at the front of the lineout. The game was refereed extremely well by Roger Quittenton, one of the best referees ever.
You are fucking joking, yeah?
Interesting the many informed comments 1. The penalty was not for Hadens dive . The ref stated after the game he knew Haden had dived and ignored it 2. The penalty was for Oliver being jumped off . That’s clear penalty. Any VAR would not have overturned the penalty 3. Wales wasted ball and at no stage looked like scoring. Despite dominating the first half their tactics were boring up and under kicks. Wasted backline talent 4. Fenwick breaking Curries jaw should have been a send off . That’s not tough He ruined a 22 years old career . We call those hits “ coward hits “ as that’s what they are . Currie would have been one of the greats in All Blacjs 5 New Zealand scored tge only try and were the only team trying to score . With what little ball they had , they always looked dangerous. As I said Wales wasted their talent by kicking it hoping NZ mistake . 6. Had VAR been there tgen Wakes would have been down to 14 men and NZ would have easily won
How come it took 30 min for the physio to show up ? Maybe he was at home watching the game.
It was clearly a dive out of the line-out by the New Zealanders - they did the same in another game against Wales when the Welsh were winning. I wonder the announcers didn't catch it.
Brian Williams couldn't hit the side of a barn! 😂😂
The more I look at Yorath, the more I realise that he was such a poor footballer. Possession lost here and there, rushed passes to team mates who are already tightly marked. Never the brightest of guys, there seemed so little thought in his game. That penalty in the 2nd game was hilarious. Yorath apparently had never taken a penalty in his life. How was that even possible? An international for years, playing in the top division. What had training consisted of? Running and shooting from distance? As for the way the Welsh played ... kick and hope was the best that could be said. I challenge anyone to tell me what formation they were playing that day. At any one point they have 2 at the back, then three, then four. And the defensive line is anywhere within a 20 metre space. Just bat shit crazy madness. The only player who put his foot on the ball and controlled it was Leighton James. He was good but nothing more than that.
What a great player Clive Burgess was for Ebbw Vale and Wales RIP
I am watching thus at the lowest point in Welsh Rugby. A reminder of what could be…
What a Buchan cross that was! Absolutely Buchan perfect.
could have easly been 6 all Ireland lost 12 10 Wales lost Barbarians 18 15 and the worst All Black team to ever tour the UK
Dirty English
Great to see that English grand slam pack testing Wales away from home. Odd though that the 1980 England/Wales 5 nations game seems to have been lost for posterity. Maybe the game's been censored by the Welsh devolved assembly!
Haha you what are you accusing us of something sir.
Writing the final result in the title is a deadly sin! Who can be that stupid?
How can Joe Jordan clench is fist and celebrate that your a cheat son everyone knew that then and now 👎
Argie ref provided karma😅
Oh so how the game has changed But Hayden was a dog no different from the Aussie underarm and of course B McKecknie was there for both That should have been a Wales win couldn’t stand Hayden after that an embarrassment as an AB supporter
Great crowd atmosphere. No stupid music, no dumb flames - just rugby.
The smile on my face that day is the same as watching the game just now. Brilliant.
Had phil bennett retired by this time? Gareth Edwards too?

Great Scotland team when you look back brilliant night and dalish. Was class that night with Alan rough great save just as good when we beat the England at Wembley 😂😂 5:09 5:15
A half decent Scottish side I have to admit. Did enjoy watching them make fools of themselves at the World Cup Finals though.
you meant like beating holland? probably better than any england team in history? and scotland blew them away.
Gareth Davies had a superb game. Classy outhalf regardless. These games are much better than the modern fare. Phil Blakeway having to play at loose head!
What a dogs bollocks of a game! That ref could have given Barnes the Barnacle a run in 2023😀😀
