I've worked in call centers for the past 10 years and after watching this video I am pretty sure I have this. I've dealt with vertigo, tinnitus and migraines as well. Even the softest sounds such as rustling grocery bags seem so loud to me and the worst is the sound of a refrigerator or a computer in a quiet room. I don't even play music in my car anymore. I'm definitely going to schedule a visit with an audiologist.
What did the audiologist say? My hearing aid specialist told me I most likely have it after a hearing test. He told me I would have to see an audiologist to get an official diagnosis.
Vestibular migraines can damage the middle ear and cause your issues, including dizzy, vertigo, fullness, pressure. Vestibular migraines don’t often always occur w head pain. See ENT/neurologist: Michael Teixido
I am saving this video as a favorite. I am seriously about to share it with family and coworkers. I was injured in 2004 with tinnitus. Then, job related, hyperacuity onset developed both gradually, then suddenly. Now I am desperate to go back to the VA, where the audiologist said she agreed with me that it must be psychosomatic. I suggested it passive-aggressively because she didn’t believe me that I experience pain after having adopted the constant use of earplugs for protection, which of course I am aware has affected my perception sensory threshold. I’m actually pissed off now and want to officially complain because I could have been benefiting from a hearing aid device that is designed with occlusion. I just learned about this watching other videos. Today, my comment here, is 2022MAY29 SUN. Thank you. P.S. I forgot to say that I noticed how the variable of SPL’s (sound pressure levels) were not mentioned or included in this video.
Very good video. At 17:35 some Hyperacusis/Noxocusis sufferers say to always wear ear plugs and stay as quiet as possible at all costs to protect your ears. But I've noticed these people on Facebook etc never improve? I've had H and T for 4 months now and never use ear defence unless of course when doing DIY, concerts etc but I have no improvement yet. The Hyperacusis started with annoying scary fridge, freezer, car sounds, and annoying letter "S" letter sounds. Then that stopped and was replaced by painful kitchen utensil clanging, dishes, cutlery, screaming kids, letter Ssss, and even talking sounds. But now I oddly have no problems with power tools, car, fridge, distant screaming, TV, Radio anymore. Mostly closer up sudden sounds cause pain. As you say I apparently have no hearing loss in the test up to 8000hz, all apparently in normal range. Would the hearing damage if any be in a higher frequency like 15000hz? Was super stessed for 10 years leading up to this and also had Lyme disease in the past but not anymore! Apparently listening to pink noise can somehow improve Hyperacusis? Wtf?
I don't encourage anyone to let a doctor /audiologist perform the LDL (loudness discomfort level) test. It is an invasive test, which means the audiologist put louder and louder beeps to your already damaged ears. It may cause further damage, and your hyperacusis can be even worse. Not to mention, that LDL test has practically zero benefit in treatments. The other test I would avoid if the cause of the hyperacusis is clear (like it was caused by noise exposure) is acoustic reflex test. It is a very similar invasive test that can harm your hearing further.
I got a hearing test and my hearing is within the normal range. I have sound sensitivity and my tinnitus has gotten a lot worse. Just hearing people speak, especially with sibilant noises like “s” and “t” is painful. The ENT that examined me basically said that my hearing is fine and that it should improve with time. I’m not sure if there’s anything I can do to improve the condition on my own because it’s definitely making my life a lot harder.

Where hyperacusis is causing sympathetic nervous system over arousal and they dont normally avoid loud sounds - none of these treatment options are going to do a damn thing. Calming exercises will help, but otherwise you seem to be on your own.
I find it funny that the recommendation for CBT is to think about your problem in a more positive way. I've always thought one would seek out a psychologist because they were delusional but here it seems to be the goal to become delusional. I can imagine the conversation "Doctor, I am having this issue where everything is too loud. I can't go anywhere or be anywhere where it's tolerable." The doctor says, "Have you tried not caring about it? I highly recommend it, it's how we treat every chronic pain issue. There is no timeline on how much treatment you will need, it could be for the rest of your life. I'll get you set up with a referral to a psychologist who conveniently by law can't say no and you can get started not caring about it soon."

It happened the same with me. Also, I had mild hearing loss from the concert. My H has gotten slightly better though recently, after 3 months that it was very bad.
