[10th Anniversary Special #1] Unusual Railroad Crossings I've Recorded

- For the first part of my 10th anniversary special, I decided to compile a video of all of the unusual setups I've filmed over the 10 years I've been doing this, ranging from slightly unusual to very strange.
(Also, I will admit I realized I forgot to include a couple of crossings after uploading this, lol.) - วิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี
The first railroad crossing in the video is one of the rarest and the weirdest railroad crossing I’ve seen in my life

Definitely!!

@@Robloxbasicsonly I never seen that type of railroad crossing. Including the lights

1:52:55 There is no other railroad crossing in the U.S. with a "school bell" like that!
Most zoo trains have them on every single one
WHHHHHHAAAAAATTTTTTTTT
@@finnythao1548 Okay, so basically, this railroad decided to reuse a Simplex mechanical school bell from an actual school. Very odd for it to be on a crossing.
I like the way the school bell sounds on it! I wish every single mechanical bell (most of them) made for crossings sounded like that
Location?
Dude... 10 years and still going... keep up the great work
Thanks!
What can I say he is a legend
@@freebrickproductions Any chance are you able to post the street view locations of the crossings? 😊
2:35:56 is by far very unusual bc it's using drawbridge gates
11:07 Bru not the gate getting stuck lol
Other signal: DUDE GET OUT THE WAY ME TRYNA GET THE GATE DOWN Up Signal: no lol
38:47 this made my day..reminds me of when my uncle was around the steam train whistle :)
My favorite part is 0:00 all the way to 2:45:40

They need to put those light on a cantilever besides hanging down like that because the pole on the left is leaning that it could possibly snap and that’s not safe to have it like that. And also the gate on the left didn’t fully go down either. So who ever runs this line needs to upgrade that crossing
NS owns it, and yes, it's in dire need of TLC. The gate wasn't helped by the fact it was bent.
the gate on the left actually hit the set of dangling lights and sign :[]
I agree because I’ve seen that crossing malfunction before when the gate got stuck on the overhead lights or the crossbucks which kept the crossing activated for a while until it was fixed
34:35 they overdid it on the cantilever
3:00 - 10:44 Thanks for stopping by in my hometown of Savannah, GA!
There use to be a mechanical bell originally, but replaced it with a e-bell.
I'm aware, lol.
I’m from Savannah GA as well!
Sounded like a Belgium or UK railroad crossing bell at 1:52:50
That thing literally gave me a headache! If I had to hear that everyday, I'd go nuts!
That’s bcuz it’s a school bell. That isn’t your average crossing bell, they used a school bell for this
It is a simplex mechanical school bell
59:47 That's one thing that pisses me off more than drivers going right through activated crossings; taking the time to stop, showing common sense, only to say "screw it" and throw their one brain cell out the window by going through anyway....
they likely stop to see if there’s a train near them, not defending them though, its still a bad move
2:23:20
Cool video. These crossing's would be interesting modeling subjects for an HO layout. I always wanted to make my own combinations. Thanks
Thanks!

Happy 10th anniversary! It's been a pleasure viewing your vids all this time!
(At 2:23:20 who's bright idea was it to put a roundabout in at a crossing? 😂)
Thanks! It's an improvement over the previous intersection there it appears, TBH.
Was this taken in Sanderville I kind recognize that railroad roundabout
my cat loves this video you know why becuse the nose that one of the CSXtrain carts was makeing it made her come to me and watch it with me 😆🤣

Happy 10th Anniversary to Your TH-cam Channel Co-Railfan! greetings from Philippines!!
Wow 34:30 was really unusual crossing.
Happy 10th Anniversary to your TH-cam Channel
Thanks!
Cool
Thanks!
Ok
34:39. OK, that is through the roof in unsualility.
43:33. Why does only 1 side have a gate?
For the second, I think it's due to the highway intersecting the road right next to the crossing. CSX probably felt that there wasn't enough room to fit a gated signal there, especially with how long the gate would need to be.
For the first one, it appears to be a half signal gantry, turned sideways for use as a railroad crossing… very neat
34:47 is that a signal gantry?! alright, this is THE most unusual crossing i’ve seen this side of the Mississippi 😂😱
Yeah.
Great video! Congratulations on 10 years :)
Thanks!
1:52:55 When it’s time for the train to go to school
Very interesting crossings, congrats for the 10 years!!
Thanks!
49:43 Where is this?
Broad Street, Headland, AL
What are the traffic signals for on the first crossing?
They let the train crews know the signals are active.
I love these videos not only do you get the crossing signal but also the train, Norfolk Southern has to be one of worst railroads with terrible locomotive horns.
I like the wig wag lights though.
dude the 3rd crossing was so weird that the crossing signal on the other side failed to go down
Railroad Crossings that do have signals always need a bell! What if there's somebody crossing the track when there's a high speed train approaching?
There's a reason why trains blow their horns on approach to crossings, unless it's a quiet zone (though, even then, the crew can still blow the horn if they see someone on the tracks).
34:26 I've saw that video before it's by the central Texas railfan
We recorded that crossing on that side together as we met-up that day and I was showing him around a bit. The video included in this video was my video from that day.
0:01 that looks so disturbing
Fantastic video David!
Thanks!
Ooh! I love that K5HL In That 3rd Railroad In CSX
1:13:31 Woah that is cool!
Where is the crossing at 2:09:05
Outwater Lane in Garfield, NJ.
Some crossings on the Metra in Chicago have this feature
The crossings where i live have those talking signs, i hate them, the voice is so annoying
50:00 What bell is that? It looks so weird! Also, this movie is better than Rise of Skywalker and The Last Jedi! Also happy 10th anniversary!
That ain't a bell, lol.
@@freebrickproductions Then what is it?
@@jdrailfan391 It's a US&S light, used to let train crews know the signals are active. Both signals have one.
@@freebrickproductions makes more sense, I was wondering the same thing
@@freebrickproductions its white
Where's that crossing located at 2:36:02? I remember somewhere in Wisconsin had that type of gate but it's been replaced years ago. It looks interesting and I wonder if it's still there
US 231/AL 10 in Troy, AL. Was there as of 2019, but reportedly, they've since been replaced (street view hasn't been through since 2019 though, so no idea if that's true or not). Believe they are/were the last ones in service in the US on a railroad crossing.
@@freebrickproductions ah that sucks. But thank u for letting me know so that I don't have to travel to see.
@@DolenzFan5 Yea, but again, there's no confirmation that they are gone, the only way I even know that they might be is because someone commented on my original video of the crossing that they went through a while after I recorded that video and they claim that they saw they were replaced.
@@freebrickproductions I wouldn't really be surprised if it was replaced.
Same here, TBH. Don't believe they were ever fully approved by the FRA as apparently the FRA doesn't have any regulations governing how they're supposed to operate and/or be maintained, per the State of Wisconsin's reasoning for getting rid of the ones the WSOR had up there.
Either way, I'm glad I was able to film these ones in action, regardless of if they're gone now or not.
Where is that second crossing located?
Savannah, GA.
Depot Street’s bell sound is funny
At 49:51 why is the back of the bell open
There are no bells there.
Happy aniversary 10th
Thanks!
2:36:20 Why is the gate sounding like this?
Because they liked to creak, and I think some metal pieces were rubbing against other metal pieces.
Great crossings
Thanks!
2:36:20 what was the screech
The arm sliding into position in the holder on the right-hand side of the road.
So where is that first crossing at? I’ve never seen a crossing like that and I find it very interesting
Mountain Gap Road, Huntsville, AL.
The only thing different about it is that it has traffic light mast arms as cantilevers which is pretty interesting
35:40 where is that I need to go there
32nd Street in Birmingham, AL.
So that second crossing has a bell and no lights? They should definitely put a nice loud mechanical bell there 😂😂
Used to be a WCH mechanical bell, but I guess it died.
Hi there guys
At 11:10, if you look at the gate on the other side closely, it is stuck on the signal.
Don't need to "look closely" at the other signal, it's fairly obvious.
@@freebrickproductions LOLOL
I don't really know why that crossing is like that. I think that crossing is dangerous due to the gates getting stuck on the hanging crossbuck with signals. Still kinda cool though
For the first one why did they use traffic signal mast arms as cantilevers?
No idea, think it was something the city may have done.
@@freebrickproductions oh okay
Congrats on Ten Years Bro!
Thank you!
@@freebrickproductions log on my computer is in fact is in good condition
This one is a fatal accident waiting to happen no lights or gates
1:37:59 What is the point of the second cantilever signal. They could have just built another median
The one at 11:00, is this Birmingham, Al?
Yes.
11:11 the crossing on the left looks like its about to fall down
What crossing on the left? There's only one crossing there.
@@freebrickproductions the signal that has the gate stuck on the lights,
@@molossis Yea, the pole for that is rotted and warped badly. Don't believe they've replaced it yet, probably due to it being a state highway and ALDOT not wanting to put money towards upgrading it for some reason.
5:17 The second railroad I actually live near
3:08 what street is that
It's in Savannah, GA.
1:52:52 It's Sound Like School Bell!🔔
What are the traffic lights for on the first one? 00:18
Winkomatic.
Heyo David! Why is there only a bell there but no lights whatsoever @ 7:32
No idea. Just something that the ACL decided to do.
59:15 looks like it used to have cantilevers!am I right?
Still does, but the arms were cut off.
Cool video! Wow, two hours and fourty-five minutes of amazing trains and railroad crossings?! That's what I call a movie!

Anybody else thinking about 1206’s horn from unstoppable?
Also did you do a Crossing tour of the crossing
Not really, but I do have at least one malfunction video that you could argue counts as one.

@@freebrickproductions okay 😊
1:13:29 This one took me a moment. Gate parallel to the track instead of perpendicular to the road. Not sure what the signals department was thinking there.
More of the off-set rear lights for me, putting the arms parallel to the tracks seems to have been a thing at least some railroads liked to do back in the day. You can still find it with modern installs on occasion as well, especially if there's an intersection on one side of the crossing.
@@freebrickproductionsOh I see that now.
10:45 where’s this
1st Avenue (US 11), Birmingham, AL
aww man I’m from oregon
50:26 what kind of bell is that? it looks like a destroyed mechanical bell of some sort. or maybe its one of those white lights some railroads use to tell the engineer the signal is working. i dunno
It's the latter, a flashing lunar white indication made by US&S and installed with the signals by the ACL many years ago.
@@freebrickproductions k thanks
Awesome
Thanks!
Where is the crossing at 15:54 and how often is it used?
1st Avenue in Baxter, TN. Dunno how often it's used these days, probably whenever the NERR needs to get out to Cookeville, which I think is as needed/a few times a week?

34:37 they wasted so much money on this signal gantry they could have a cantilever from the left side of the road

RR crossing in roundabout? Dumb
I called depot street

2:03:02 why do the lights keep going in and out?
LEDs do that sometimes I’m pretty sure but it only happens through a camera
47:38 why did they stop?
So the conductor could get off and line the switch, open the derail, and/or at least make sure the coupling on the cars they were about to pick-up was open.
