    PLEASE READ THE DESCRIPTION BELOW:
This time, a cover of another two treasures from BoC. This is from their unofficial tape "A Few Old Tunes" from 1996. Details about the release: www.discogs.com/Boards-Of-Can...
I prepared to do this for some time, because it is a real gem in their crown. It took some time because I wanted to do it right and not modify their vision too much. Yes, I know "A Few Old Tunes" was intended for their friends only and it was released before they became well known but fortunately someone shared it once and I'm not sad because of this. ;) At first I wanted to make a cover of "5.9.78" only but then, when I progressed, it became clear to me that "5.9.78" can't live without "Boqurant" because both tracks are integral and the beautiful transition between them confirms it totally.
Why am I doing this, you ask?
    1. To express how I admire BoC!
    2. To set a challenge to myself so I can learn something new in audio production. Even if you do it for about 20 years there's still something more to learn.
    3. I love covers that are faithful to the original (as much as possible) and especially with BoC certain sound and emotion are two most crucial elements. Besides, you can not improve on perfection, so the best way is to totally immerse in the mood of original work
I stress, it's not easy at all. I had to spend some time to tweak the patches and recreate the sound, it took many evenings.
All sounds were created on Yamaha AN1x, except the base intro patch (made on daHornet vst: nusofting.liqihsynth.com/freep...) and the mellotron type flute from Kurzweil SP 4-7. The beat was produced in Reaper. Everything was mixed in Reaper also. I used some wow and flutter effect, VHS tape emulation, the mix was even sent to my trustworthy AKAI cassette deck (without recording to tape but using cassette tape adaptor) and recorded again from its output. The tuning of the track is 31.3 cents higher from a standard A440 tuning.
If you are interested in some more details please leave a comment. Don't forget to subscribe and share my work if you like it and if you are a fan of BoC like me. You can watch my other BoC covers on my channel.

F aug5 sus4 (F Bb C#) (you can play this chord optionally only once as an anacrusis before 1st section, it comes frome fade out of „Boqurant” and actually it's a part of it but it gives a nice overtone)
      1st section:
      bass: Bb, chord: F sus4 (F Bb C) (1 bar)
bass: Bb, chord: Bb (F Bb D) (1 bar)
      bass: F, chord: Fm (F G# C) (2 bars)
bass: Bb, chord: Bb (F Bb D) (2 bars)
      bass: F, chord: Fm (F G# C) (2 bars)
      2nd section:
      bass F#, chord F# (F# Bb C#) (1 bar)
bass Bb, chord Bb (Bb D F) (1 bar)
      bass G#, chord G# 6th (G# C Eb F) (2 bars)
      (repeat infinitely :))
These are just basic chords, but the same synth sound plays some melody. I recorded the melody separately, because I played chords with two hands (bass note + chord). I plan to record some „behind the scenes”, where I'm gonna show some more details.

A beautiful cover of my favorite song (this cover might even be better than the original). Seeing how you play the notes on the synth, aswell as some beautiful nostalgic clips of random memories. And the really cool vintage filter making it look like the video was some recently found footage from the 70s. The video as a whole emits a special kind of nostalgia to childhood before the digitalization. I was born way after the 70s yet it's making me feel like I experimented it. Good job.

As a fellow AN1x owner, and admirer of BOC, I am strangely proud that the AN1x could pull this off!!! - What am i saying!? - Of course it bloody can! - Fantastic Synth! - It's even speculated that BOC use the AN1x

      @xoio 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

@@jesdaniels3166 - Alas, Boqurant + 5.9.78 were created before the AN1x existed, it didn't come out until 1997. However the AN1x IS modelled on the Prophet 5, as well as Yamaha's own CS synths. (Yamaha bought the rights to Sequential Circuits & Dave Smith himself lay the foundations for Yamaha's Virtual Analogue technology). Given the closeness to the sounds the AN1x can make to actual BOC tracks, It does make one speculate that perhaps BOC's 'secret weapon' is some kind of Sequential Circuits synth or CS synth? There is also speculation that the 'blue synth' that BOC have been seen using in their early live gigs, may well be an AN1x and not the CS1x rompler. - If it were ever 'confirmed' that BOC do use & have an AN1x, I'm sure 2nd hand prices would rocket! - But the Synth HAS been used by the likes of Nine inch Nails!!!

BOC has been my all-time favourite band for a decade, these guys are pretty much gods among men to me and where many covers/tributes manages to mimic their sound they fail completely at capturing that BOC magic . Not only does your cover live up to its original counterparts, I actually find your version superior. Apart from the obvious improvement in recording quality your overall sound has a greater depth and nuance to it with none of the originals soul and emotion being lost in the process, something I've thought of as damn near impossible.
