  • Took me long enough, but here are the results of the lowering links install. Not the outcome I hoped for. Word on the street is lowering links are OK for street riding, but are no good for dirt riding. Confirmed. At least for my bike and my dirt riding style. I'm still determined to get the seat lower without compromising rear suspension performance, so watch for Part 3 coming soon.

Just purchased a creampuff 2018 with less than 6K miles on it. Will likely install 1" links and was looking at link related vids. I had a XR650L that came with a lowering link and weighing in at 210 fully geared and prone to carrying way too much crap on my rides, it bottomed out easily. The cure was a stiffer spring. The DRZ shock has enough damping adjustment to accommodate a stiffer spring, but if you go much stiffer, damping rates have to be changed to deal with stronger forces. I dont know if the stock shock can be re-valved, if so, it would be much cheaper than an aftermarket shock I've used Race Tech parts, service, and advice for years.

Hi did you ever produce part 3 on the lowering links. If not did you speak to professional? What was your final result? Thanks for the info thus far.

Sorry, no, there has not been a part 3. Due to unforeseen forest closures in my area I haven't been able to ride much. Where I left off was putting the original links back on and just tiptoeing around (and falling over a couple of times). I was advised by a suspension shop not to tinker with the shock's internals to lower the seat height. Opinions vary on that, but I haven't tried it.

@@letsridewithwheels Thanks for the update. You know most of those off road bikes are extremely tall even for a tall 6’ 2” man like myself, if I stop and the ground isn’t level I can’t touch.

what would happen if you were set the preload on the spring all the way down, would it prevent it from bottoming out?

nevermind i saw that answered in the video, i have some 2" lowering links layin around but i also have a 2004 CRF450R shock that im going to rebuild this weekend with some 5W oil to see if i cant get things workin out. The bike is just very tall and in rocky insane sections i just wish it were a bit shorter.

How much were the lowering bones supposed to drop it? -1, -2, -3?

The links I tried are 2". Combined with the Seat Concepts Low-Rider seat the seat height dropped almost 4". It was perfect, but not usable for dirt riding.

Wondering about part 3. Were they 2 inch lowering links?

Hi DC! Apologies for the very late response. Still no part 3. The links I used were 1.5 inch. I've been riding with the stock links back on and just tip-toeing my way around. Sadly, a resident on the road to my local mountain playground decided to put up a gate last year and closed off access to the mountains. So the last few months I've been trying to work with the Forest Service (not helpful) and county (sort of helpful) to get at least one road reopened. In the meantime, my trusty DRZ has developed an engine knock. So I need to figure that out. Thanks for checking in!

    Hi. Where the 3 part?

Still haven't made a part 3 since I'm still riding around on the original links after removing the lowering links. They work great as long as I don't have stop. When I do have to stop, level ground is preferred. Because my toes can BARELY touch level ground. I still don't like it, so maybe one day there will be a part 3!
