    In the U.S. we call calico "muslin." There are different weights. We use the term "calico" for small floral print cotton quilting fabric. And your muslin is called "gauze" here!

    • @judypierce2495
      @judypierce2495 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      And what you call muslin we called gauze!

      Oh thank you! That's very helpful to know. I hope I didn't confuse too many people - other than myself!

      Calico, gauze and muslin are all different. You can get all 3 in the UK
      Muslin has a very distinctive weave. Its calico in this video.

      In Australia we call this fabric calico, muslin is a really lightweight fabric that looks creased and we wrap babies in, in summer. Gauze is even more open weave like cheesecloth

    You might consider zig-zagging around your openings to reinforce them. That area of the bag can get a lot of wear and tear from the drawstrings opening and closing, gliding repeatedly across it.

    This is really helpful so people can make their own size. Unfortunately I am a particular dunce - when you say 4cm at the top on each side are you basically allowing 8 cm on to your chosen length? (Sorry. 😳) I do have pinking shears though so thanks for that tip! (My mother was a very talented seamstress (and cook and gardener) but she didn’t really like me going near sharp or hot things! 😂)

    This is perfect! I have a lot of silk in my stash and I’m going to make these bags. Also, I knit and get eczema on my hands from the finish on yarn. I have to carefully wash the balls and skeins before I can use them. I’m going to use old sheet material to make bags so I can put the yarn inside the spin cycle on my washing machine. That way they’ll air dry faster. Thank you so much!

    One question: I noticed in your machine that the needle is offset from the centre of the presser foot. Mine is the same, and I thought it must be an issue with the machine.
    But is it meant to be like that? And why? I find it much more difficult to operate than my old machine which had the needle in the centre.

    This is a very helpful video. I had a good idea in my head on how to make a double drawstring bag. After watching the video, I realized my mind was making a bit more complicated than it needed to be. This video saved me from doing a few unnecessary extra steps.
    Unfortunately, I didn’t have ribbon or cord which matched the fabric I choose to use. Instead, I made some double fold bias tape out off the same fabric and sewed it shut. It worked out well and was a good alternative to the ribbon.
    Thanks so much for taking the time to make this easy to follow, informative video and sharing it!

      Thank you, I'm really glad it was helpful, making bias tape for the closure is a great idea.

    Thank you for doing this video and demystifying what I thought (and is) a simple project! I have made a neat gift bag thanks to you. (despite the safety pin opening inside the drawstring channel and trying to scupper my plans 😅)
