I have now tried the De Garre and I totally agree with you, if I was offered both I would choose/pick De Garre every single time, if only had the option of Westmlle than happy days I would certainly not turn it down!
As I'm watching your review im drinking a Westmalle Trappist Tripel, and when you said De Garre was like getting a hug from someone or your mother, I said out loud to myself and this is like getting a sharp slap around the face, I had just taken a big sip when you then said about the Dad thing, I nearly spat the thing everywhere nearly choking to keep it in my mouth while belly laughing! Your reviews are just spot on! I've not tried the De Garre but I will be doing my upmost to get a bottle or two to try, I love the idea of Trappist beer, more for the history of it and the taste is just a bonus, while drinking it like a king out of the chalice/goblet glass, it's a lovely experience and a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon while whiling away the time.
My experience with triples is when compared with other Belgian styles such as dubbel and Quad is the driest and most hoppy. So by description the Westmalle seems themore standard for the style.
Can't wait to try de garre, on a side note from tripels the best readily available beer in the world for me is la trappe quadrupe.l I'm in love with it
Great review. Their both awesome brews. I enjoyed the westmalle a few days back and sinking the de garre this afternoon. So both fresh in memory. For my taste i lean towards the westmalle. But that's not to belittle the de garre their both good. And worthy of status but if the Man upstairs says sorry only one bottle aloud in my friend then the westmalle would get the edge. Cheers very interesting.
Ordered 20 bottles of De Garre 2 weeks ago. Shame about DPD!! Parcel now held for 1 week at my local depot ,just 1 mile away ,and they refuse to deliver ,or allow collection, as there has been a breakage / leakage. Beeronweb very helpful ,but DPD useless ,they initially said they would have to send the box back to Belgium. Wasted many hours online /phone . Just placed a second order as this could go on for weeks, fingers crossed this time Oh, Tesco had Saison St Feuillien for £1.25 yesterday. Bought 6 ,went back today but non, non online either ,but offer is running until mid September if it reappears Finally Hoegaarden 33cl bottles for just 79p in Home Bargains
Not a big fan of Westmalle, and have now had the De Garre the last 2 nights. The De Garre is good, but although it tries to hide the alcohol ,at 11% it is impossible ,and as a consequence you know you are drinking a very very strong beer.Even the small bottles are the equivalent of half a bottle of wine. So I'm sticking with LeFort,followed by Gouden Carolus as my favourite Tripels.Ok neither can be exactly described as weak at 8-9%abv ,but for me this is the optimum amount, and a lot different than 11

I'm drinking a cheeky sunday afternoon westmalle triple ,and I'm ashamed to say ,not a big fan ,its okay but I'm just not appreciating it ..tastes like a strong larger to me ,this or duval I take duval all day over this ..I love the dubble .maybe my taste buds ain't quite there yet ..I'll give myself 50 lashes with a rose Bush for my ignorance lol ..the Belgian beer adventure continues....
De garre over Westmalle? Bollocks! De garre is good, but doesnt even come close to a proper tripel like Westmalle. Westmalle is like the godfather over all the beers in the world… nothing comes close to it. Kind regards, a proper belgian 🫡

In the end it comes down to personal preference like in almost everything that is not pure numbers
