      It's also extremely well filmed, had a top notch crew working it. The sets are phenomenal and huge. And visual effects were cutting edge for the day. There is a 30ft long model of the ship they used for incredible shots of it. And what a ship design that is too. Everything about it is designed to be unsettling. And it works.

    When the engineers were building this ship in the shipyard, I guess they were like “so a whole crew of people are gonna work and live on this ship? Then we should make the interior look as unsettling and anxiety inducing as possible!”

    • @xen0bia
      @xen0bia ปีที่แล้ว +37

      The interior and exterior design for the ship was inspired by the Notre Dame Cathedral, hence the archways in some of the rooms and the cross shape of the ship. Not sure any real engineer would be like "Oh yeah, this is an approriate design for a spaceship!". Or maybe they thought if they were going to go to Hell, might as well by in a flying cathedral!

    I was a projectionist and booth manager back when films were on actual 35mm film. We had to assemble adds, policies, trailers plus the actual film. We then had to screen it for problems in the middle of the night. We had to watch everything go through if we wanted to or not. Needless to say I've seen countless horror movies but this was the first film I ever turned the house lights back up to preview level and sat on the back row. Rumor has it that Paul Anderson cast a group of adult film performers to film the "Hell Ship" scenes, and most of what was filmed was unsuitable for release, even with an NC-17 rating.

    • @OpenMawProductions
      @OpenMawProductions ปีที่แล้ว +11

      The edits are often overstated.
      There's a deleted briefing scene at the beginning of the movie, which is semi redundant to the final version of the film, because they play the distress call in the briefing scene. Dr. Weir insists that he has to go on the mission, and we learn that he's basically be disgraced ever since.
      On boarding the Event Horizon they find a tooth attached to its root. This was cut for pacing, and to give the bridge scene with the corpsicle and the blood on the wall maximum effect. They also cut out the pay off from the Hell orgy where we see a man get a hammer to the back of the head and his teeth getting punched out.
      The porn stars are still in the movie as the old crew. The Hell orgy seen is still there, but it featured a few more brief cuts.
      More explicitly shot of the woman doing doggy to the man that we can see... She's shoving a metal rod up his rectum.
      Another member of the crew gets hit int he back of the head with a hammer and nail, and his teeth get punched out the front of his mouth.
      We get a longer shot of the woman eating the man's living out of his belly. (She was supposed to be riding him cow girl, but there's no way for that to logistically work.)
      The guy ripping his guts out of his mouth was originally a few moments longer.
      The "Images from Hell" hallucinations were longer by a few seconds. They were never "minutes and minutes" longer like people claim. They were always intended to be flashes of violent and grotesque imagery, almost painterly in their composition (and if you freeze frame them, there are some very potent images in there.)
      There were more scenes featuring the Weir Beast, when the tank explodes in the grav-couch bay, he was supposed to crawl out and down the ladder.
      There were some bits and pieces of dialogue that were cut or trimmed from the workprint.
      People who claim there were "20 minutes of gore" cut... No. There was never 20 minutes of good. Maybe a total of 20 minutes worth of scenes, trims, and some gore elements. They didn't cut entire sequences like so many people seem to think. When it came to the rating they trimmed, sometimes, just a few frames off the ends of shots. The other concern was runtime. Shorter run time = more screenings per day.

    There is a sci-fi property called "Warhammer 40000" or WH40k that has a concept of an alternate dimension called The Warp which is infested with demons and all manner of evil spiritual entities- The Warp is used as a conduit for travel and various devices exist that prevent weird things from happening while you're travelling through it, but things were not always so well understood- and it is common to consider this film as a sort of unofficial canon to WH40k as far as Warp travel without those safety devices present or the dangers of the Warp known.

      The story behind that is wild. Apparently it was a lot longer, like 30-40 minutes longer. And so intense and gory some test audience members were fainting. And it also gave exposition on crew members greatest fears, that of course end up happening to the crew members, like vivisection, etc.
      So anyway, what they cut was stored in a salt mine in Transylvania for whatever reason, and had degraded to unusability by the time it got popular enough to warrant a directors cut, so we'll probably never get to see the original.

    "Event Horizon" is what you'd get if "The Shining" and "Hellraiser" had a baby together, and that baby happened to be a space ship at the edge of the solar system. Great movie, and the second DVD I ever bought (after "The Sixth Sense"). Like a lot of cult classics, it underperformed at the box office, but was discovered by millions of fans after the fact.

    glad you watched this movie. it was basically a haunted house in space and pretty good imo. great cast that performed well i thought
    fun fact they cut the scene of the crew after the jump as too disturbing and the footage was destroyed at some point so it couldn't be restored when they made a director's cut.

      See how much more effective jump-scares are when they're EARNED? The atmosphere, and, build up makes each one that much scarier. James Wan could learn a thing, or, two from this movie.

    Kat: “The Event’s Over, Horizon!!!” [Then looks to the camera with a smug look of self satisfaction, as if to say, “See what I did there?”, pretending that she hasn’t spent last 2 hours screaming about doors opening in routine fashion.]
    Classic Kat.

    The life force in the ship exploits the vulnerabilities of those within it. Weir wasn't an "evil" person when he arrived at the Event Horizon, but he was perhaps the most damaged member of the crew. He's haunted by guilt over the loss of his wife, and of course as a scientist his worldview has no room for the supernatural, so he's thrust into a situation he literally can't comprehend. But the horizon is the culmination of his life's work, so he is desperate to save it.
    This makes him the most vulnerable and easiest to exploit. Captain Miller by comparison has baggage from his past too, but he has an incredibly strong will. Peters, as a divorced mother of a special needs child, who suffers guilt at being separated from him, was also basically killed by the ship exploiting those emotions. While the ship terrifies other members of the crew, it can't do much to them without a possessed "agent" which is what Weir ends up becoming.

    Such a great movie, like yes there are jumps cares, but the horror of the movie doesn't rely on it. The mere feeling of being trapped on a ship that went to a new universe, and see all your crew/friend brutally disappear at the hands of that first new discovered universe wich happens to be litteral hell! I mean common. .. This is one of the best horror movie of all time imo.

    First of all, damn it you are so good at this.
    Second, I watched this movie when it was brand new, and about 10 more times after that.
    It never crossed my mind that perhaps it was all planned by him, creating the ship and everything else, with the goal of opening such a permanent gate.
    I am not saying that's what it is, but it is an interesting look at it.
    I always thought of it as a "happy accident" that the drive did this.

    20:55 There was a LOT more footage that was supposed to be there but the studio wouldn't let them put it in because it was so graphic, they wouldn't even let them include it in the DVD extras. Apparently there were a lot of very realistic eviscerations, etc.
