I was three years old when this race was run, and I was asked to predict the winner. My family was stunned that I simply said "Number 10," and would not be dissuaded. They knew Cope didn't have a chance, and wanted me to at least choose a driver with better odds. I refused to change my choice, no matter what. They were absolutely blown away when I turned out to be right. Thanks for the video!
He was the best driver available for that seat? NASCAR sucks hard these days. Best driver in the field is Larson and it's not even close for second and where all missing out on his talents shining due to cars, teams and NASCAR been all about BS and nothing about racing. Larson just put on one of the greatest single year dirt track seasons I have had the privilege to witness and I hope he gets another ban ASAP
@@justicejensen7305They were showing the Wife of Dale Earnhardt, and she was all smiles...until Ol' Dale suddenly had something go wrong with his Car, and moved up the Racetrack! Then, her smile dropped off, and she bowed her head. You couldn't see the look on her face, but she wasn't none too pleased, to say the least! I'm so glad, though, that Derrick Cope won that race. I wish he'd of won a bunch more of 'em!
I went to school with Derrick Cope and his brother Darren Cope and sister Tammy they all always had fast cars Derrick Copes car was out here In storage I was rooting for him to win that race what was real funny they were interviewing his crew chief and he was on the radio with Derrick and Derrick was asking where's victory lane I died laughing🌹
Hertbreaking race for Earnhardt, but yes, 8 years later would come the victory he'd been waiting for. This was pretty much the highlight of Derrike Cope's career.
As for Dale Earnhardt, I didn't rightly know that it was a blown tire, that caused him to go up the track like that. His Wife definitely lost her smile that day!
And 30 years later.... dale gets his revenge 😂 I was really rooting to see how well cope would do 16 years since his last race. Being the oldest guy on the field on Sunday. But during the lap 3 tribute.... he cut a right real 😆 And this year 2021.... another first time winner- first ever cup win came to another driver
I would say that this race, and the 2011 Daytona 500, were the 2 bigest upsets, in the Daytona 500 history. Derrike Cope would also won at Dover later that year.
As much as we all wanted Dale to win, Cope and his team probably appreciated that rare win more than people could realize. I'm glad he got to experience that victory.
I actually dreamt that he didn't blow the tire and Dale Earnhardt did become the 1990 Daytona 500 Champion. Still painful to watch, after leading 155 laps only for it to fall apart with a mile left.
Imagine the bragging rights that Derrick Cope has for the rest of his life. Not only did he win the Daytona 500, but he passed one of the top 3 (and many say the greatest) Nascar drivers in history to win it. Christ.
I remember KIRO 7 (Seattle) was not going to show this race at all (I was lucky CTV showed it), KIRO showed a Sonics game, anyone in the Seattle area had to go south to Chehalis (sp) Wa. to see it. It wasn't until KIRO found a local won they showed it on tape delay.
Cope might've had him anyway. 2, 3, and 4 were all locked together and I think Earnhardt was pulled enough from the pack JUST enough that they could've got a hell of a run.
I think if cope had 4 new tires he would have really gave dale the race of his life that day with copes car being setup so loose that last run thats why he couldnt hold the car on the inside of the track, but it wasnt meant to be dales day. One of my favorite daytona 500s indeed
Earnhardt had led 155 laps and built up a 27 second lead on the field until a late race caution for a spin by Geoff Bodine set up this shootout. Dale ran over a piece of bell housing from Rick Wilson's car on the backstretch, costing him the victory.
Actually, till that last corner, this was a pretty boring race. Earnhardt was killing them all day. But Cope was no fluke as far as this race went, because he was up there right behind Earnhardt for the whole race.
I actually found out that the engine underneath Cope's car was a Hendrick engine from the late Randy Dorton. Bob Whitcomb's #10 had the same powerhouse under his hood as Ricky Rudd, Darrell Waltrip, Ken Schrader, Hut Stricklin (the 68 was a loaned Hendrick car), and of course the Days of Thunder cars which were built by Hendrick Motorsports.
Every time i watch it i think that maybe this time the tire wont go. The most unbelievable bad luck in NASCAR history belonged to that man in that race.
As a fellow Washingtonian like Derrike, it may have been luck, but as of 2015, he is the only driver from Washington to win the 500, so he can't suck totally.
If you notice in the last 4 laps after Earnhardt took the lead back on lap 196, Cope kept up with him until the center of the corner and then would push up on corner exit. Give me your honest opinion: Since Cope was keeping up with Earnhardt, do you think that if Dale didn't have the cut tire, Dale would still have won the race? I'm hoping the opinion matches mine as absolutely, if Earnhardt had not cut the tire, Dale would have won the 1990 Daytona 500.
Yes he would have won all the way. No freaking way Cope could've passed him and won singlehandedly if he tried to. He could of course run with Earnhardt for about five to ten laps and then the 3 car was gone way ahead everyone the whole race except through the cycle of green flag pit stops.
I went to school with Derrick and his brother Darren I lóved this race I cried when he won after watching so long that was awesome lwatched all his name and tail races thank you Derrick for the best race ever ❤️
If you are talking about the kid Teresa is holding I think that is Taylor Nicole the only child who belonged to both Teresa and Dale Earnhardt. Note I did not use Sr. The big E would be ok but the man never used Sr.
He was indeed married to Theresa in 1998 and right up until his death, She in fact, took over DEI after he died and is the owner of the team to this day.

Sounds like Trevor Bayne and Cope had the same problem but who could blame them? Maybe in the future the teams will show the rookies where victory lane before anything else if their miracle comes through and they win the whole thing.
I think he was too serious at times, do down and "oooo look how bad this is". I think he sounded dumb, especially later on. Now, Bob Jenkins, THERE is an announcer. Include Paul Page in their too, and as for analysts: Ned Jarrett, Sam Posey, Tom Sneva, Neil Bonnett, Benny Parsons, and maybe DW. Chris belongs in the pits.
oh no derrike cope is STILL racing in the xfinity along with morgan shepherd WOOOOW! and mike harmon, which he crashed at bristol 13 years ago, is still racing also in the xfinity! maybe bill elliott retired and also schrader retired. michael waltrip races only at superspeedway races except at indy, he races at daytona and talladega, but he said "i won't race again a full season, i will race only daytona 500, geico 500, coke zero 400 and alabama 500". he doesn't even retired from nascar. mark martin retired from nascar after the 2012 season. in nascar there is no age limit. frank kimmell is still racing in the arca racing series.

This made Earnhardt appreciate it about a thousand times more when he won it in 1998.

Probably the same reaction michael cosey Jr. had when he won that 2021 blue emu firecracker 400 in iracing
I just won the Daytona 500..

When Dale's tire goes flat and Cope makes the pass Ned says " Here comes Dope Cope" lol heehee
Willie Heard lol I just caught that after you said that!
And Belly Elliot 🤣
Chris Economacki: "Fred Cope"; Ned Jarrett: "Dope Cope" LOLLLLLLLLL

And it was Cope on old tires.
He had it mounted over the door in their shop. -U10
i remember this race, i was so happy when earnhardt started slowing in turn 3
