  • This is the Sierra Classic scramble of Mount Deerhorn’s North East ridge. It is a 3/4 class route. We hiked from Onion Valley trailhead, over Kearsarge Pass to Vidette meadow, then off trail up to the Vidette Lakes.
The was a lot of route finding, Boulder hoping, and scree scrambling before getting to the ridge proper. Lower on the ridge we encountered class 4 with a few class 5 moves. Higher up the climbing got easier and the rock got much better.
Do not take the chute down if there is no snow in it. We witnessed a large rock avalanche as we were descending the East Buttress.
Route total was about 27mi with roughly 9,000- 10,000’+ elevation gain and loss.
