They would have a bunch of carcasses and he heard about hanging a pig over a pond so the maggots drop into the water feeding the fish then a week later he'd take some maggots and use them as bait and they were so used to maggots already it was bite after bite. He could get a small tin of maggots from outside his work and catch enough fish to eat. This was back in the 50s
if you want free food to use use your scraps/unused leftover standard but if you want more than go dumbster diving for the expired food but bewhere of any laws about dumpster diving some places have them some are fine and dont care about you doing it

The previous days leftover scraps from the kitchen, mostly peelings, bones and anything like spoiled milk or the like, was put in the pan, a small amount of water added, then it was cooked up to make it soft and sterlise it. The chickens did all of the rest of the work.
And how long does it take from the time you put the leftovers in the box to the time the flies produce the maggots and you catch them in the bowl for your chickens?
Instead of putting a plate/bowl inside a box too catch the maggots, just have the plate/bowl dump into the chicken yard and leave the big box for another project. I hope that makes sense. You never need to empty the bowl again.
what stops the maggots from crawling out of the small container? i see maggots crawling on the side of my trash can in the summer sometimes so they can clearly climb plastic
It's what I raise for my girls. Meal worms are very low maintenance and they don't stink nor attract flies. They don't bite/sting/attack or really feel creepy when handling them. Can use veggie scraps from kitchen and don't have to let it rot first. Seen a video where meal worms devoured a fresh Carolina Reaper hot pepper. Made me sweat just watchin them. Ate the whole thing and didn't die.....if one believes the video. I suppose if one could train the flies to not try to get inside the house or become a sorta fly whisperer/herder/wrangler, then no worries, but considering, Imma stickin to my meal worms.

Using premade frozen food instead of leftovers or something cheaper makes me crazy.
