If Prince Ruyang had never encountered Shoshang and had that conversation with her, he never, ever would have stood up to his wife or his granddaughter: he would have taken the verbal and physical abuse, the whining and crying, and tried to placate everyone just for a little mental peace. That a young woman opened his eyes to him living 50 years in his own self-made cocoon so as not to ruffle his wife's feathers and have some inner peace when he knew how devious, conniving, evil and selfish she was all these years had to be a rude awakening. That he was finally decisive and proactive with wife and granddaughter and didn't pull any punches in giving them the choice he set before them and, in no uncertain terms telling the granddaughter to give up on her obsession with marrying a man who doesn't want her seemed to take a huge weight off his shoulders. He walked out of that room taller and straighter than he's stood in a long time and the fact neither of the women had a word to say showed they knew that the dynamic of their 'family' had suddenly just shifted in a way that *they* didn't connive or orchestrate for once. The man took his power back.

@@jaybizman8594Have to admit with all the dramas I've watched over the years, men do hit women - all the Chinese 'husband cheats/wife leaves/husband regrets' nonsensical dramas usually have a few "wife" slaps in them when the mistress should be the one getting slapped. But what I find more often is women slapping women, even women of equal status and prominence. Maybe the men just have more restraint because when men are having a confrontation, they don't even physically fight; it is more a confrontation of words, but I also admit there are women in these dramas I would love to see get slapped - in the face - with a chair (if they had chairs back then), and this overbearing, loud, obnoxious, arrogant, egotistical consort would be first in line. What an absolutely tolerant husband she's got, but his tolerance has created the horrid offspring who doesn't know enough to cast her line elsewhere as General Ling has zero interest in her entitled, spoiled, immature self and he's expressed that not just to her but in front of others quite explicitly. Can you see them married and her pulling that fake crying, whining, babyish stunt when she doesn't get her own way in something? He'd go north to defend and protect the country and be happy doing so just to get away from her for the rest of his life.
I read it its so detailed there is a reason the book is always better. Also in the book the emperors' ten daughters were all in love with zisheng plus princess yuchang and there's shaoshang just minding her own business and he chooses her over everyone else
Prince Ruyang is one of my favorite characters. I'd love to see a sequel with him and Niao Naio matching wits.
I want him to meet a nice plump middle aged widow with twinkling eyes and quiet manners.
