I too was with the last 175 btry at 29 Palms. "3rd Guns". I was a section chief and involved in the retubing in 82 & 83 to the 8" howitzer. Before it became part of 4/11 it was part of the 1st Field Artillery Group (1st FAG). It is a gun not a howitzer. The differance between a gun and howitzer is a howitzer relies on low velocity and high trajectory (slow pitch softball), a gun is the oppisite - high velocity and low trajectory (fast pitch).
I was a section chief in Vietnam on both the M107 and M110. The difference between a gun and a howitzer is the relationship of the caliber to the length of the barrel. The M110 was an 8 in howitzer and the M107 was a 175mm gun.
These thing's must never be too heavy or they will get stuck and you will have to blow them up. That's what happened with the bulky "Rhino" SP gun on the Eastern front.
Artillery is the Best

Do the yanks not check for depth of ram or is that drill become obsolete
No it's a self propelled howitzer. It may look like a cannon but it is a howitzer.
Actually, the 8" self propelled is called a howitzer, the 175mm is called a gun. At lest that was the case in my Vietnam days.
This what we call a Gun in the Royal Artillery & what a Gun!
back in 82 i worked with it .... never shot the full distance but still it was impressive to work with .

A M107 175mm is a cannon, not a howitzer.
