Hi Dave! You're not only a brilliant fly-tyier but also a very good teacher! Thanks for all the precious tips and you make dubbing work look soooooo easy.... Keep the videos coming!
Hi Davie, Great wet fly pattern, expertly dressed and tied, particularly the wings. By the way, thank you for sharing the musical credits on “Ayrshire Dreams” …a piece which is very well suited to your videos. best regards, Wayne 😀👍
I really liked this video, you gave us "what is used", "why it's used" and how to tie it in, beautiful dressing, as one becomes expectant of your video instruction. I'll give this a try, but I'd like to hear from you when to fish the flies you are tying, just a suggestion
Hi Sean, I haven't got a video on tying a winged wet coachman but I do have a soft hackle version which was tyed for a friend in Ireland..The hackles that I have used to tye an original coachman is a natural brown hen, Chinese or Indian hen capes are the ones I like.... All the very best Davie
Great to see you tying this old classic! Don't hear much about it these days, but surely still a killer on the lochs. Love the way those wings sit and meet on top in a roof shape!
Thanks Davie for helping explain how to tie this fly today at the Angling Centres open day today many thanks and looking forward to tomorrow Thanks Kenny
Thanks Davie, I've been buying up some white stuff to dye but will give dying some black a go. I'm hoping to get rabbit strip dyed to a butcher blue for tying up some jigs. I'm going to try tying jigs as adaptations of traditional trout flies.
Hi Davie, I've been experimenting by blending different blues and blacks...eg lite brite etc and I'm getting close to the effect I'm after. have also bought a Copic air spray system and done a few experiments with that
Thanks Davie, I will try it and see how it turns out. I have no idea what gets me on these tangents, I think it is reading the old books. Then realizing there is no real pattern for what they are talking about. So I drive myself nuts looking, then, like a smart man I turn to you :) All the best to you, Sean
A superb piece of workmanship this one, as were all the flies I've seen you tie. However, this fly if I could ever anywhere near copy it I would rather put into a display case than into trout waters, as the fish I usually am up against seem to like their food to look more "buggy" than this fine creation.
Hi Davie - Can you explain when you should tie in hackle by the tip versus the stem? Got to say how much I enjoy your videos - my tying has improved leaps and bounds since I started watching. It is really wonderful that you share so freely your tips and techniques. Many thanks, Paul
Excellent as always! I wanted to ask you an off subject question. Is there a way to cut a cape in half so I can dye it two different colors. I would buy two but the cost of whitting capes is prohibitive on my disability. I have done remarkably well buying supplies from auction when fly shops have closed because of the economy. I am sorry to lose them, but why not benefit? I have spent what I can this year on supplies and have a lot, but I want to dye some of the feathers. Sorry off subject. Sean
I am looking for a pattern for the royal coachman wet fly. I want to be sure the wet fly wings are the same as the quill wing on some wets. I also would like to know if the front hackle is a soft hackle or a wet fly hackle that look very much like a dry. I am trying to learn the difference. I have them in packages and some say wet fly hackle and some say dry. I use them accordingly but have no idea what the difference is. All the best to you, Sean
Hey Davie, another question. If I get to be a pain let me know and I will bother someone else. I just spend hours watching you tie. Do you sharpen your own scissors? If so How? I have dulled my scissors more than sharpen when I have tried. I have some really good scissors old good quality ones that I would like to sharpen up. Thanks in advance for answering this question. All the best, Sean
Hirobin watts, What I would do is dye a natural black feather blue to try and get the darkness you need, this is what I do with many of the colours I want....Please let me know how you get on... All the very best Davie

Hi Davie, I wonder if you could help me. I'm wanting to dye various materials in butcher blue. The commercial dyes available are too light
