The Sanna 77 was a semiauto copy of the Czech Sa 25 submachine gun. It was first produced in Rhodesia by the GM Steel company for the Rhodesian military. In this form, it was the GM-15 and GM-16 (available as either civilian semiauto or military full auto), and was made without and licensing agreement. The Rhodesian military wanted more submachine guns, and a captured Czech example looked like a simple and effective weapon that would be easily manufactured.
It appears that when the tooling was made for the GM-15/16, a second set was also produced, and brought into South Africa. In 1978, the Sanna 77 was put on the market as a semiauto only version of the GM-15/16. It differed only in the stock, which was a single polymer part (instead of a the metal stock of the Czech original and the Rhodesian copy). A substantial number were made and sold by 1983, when production ceased. The remain relatively common in South Africa today, although they have a poor reputation for reliability and virtually all of the stocks have broken.

I saw czech SMGs next door to south africa in Mocambique during late 70's and early 80's. I do not know the source, but I assumed that maybe they got them from cuba since they were getting some aid from cuba and the cuba did at one time have the czech guns. I am not mentioning model because I am not sure if the guns I saw were 9x19 or 7.62x25 both of which chamberings were in use by FRELIMO at that time. FRELIMO had a lot 9x19 weapons from Portugal and the eastern combloc nations gave them pistols and SMGs in 7.62x25 (edit).
FRELIMO was close to the one of the guerilla groups operating in the former Rhodesia and perhaps the captured guns came from those provided by Mocambique.

As always fun to have a video about our native firearms industry. I must confess I watched this video with the main aim of hearing Ian pronounce "Sanna" which is a distinctly Afrikaans word with accompanying pronunciation. Just a note, the word Sanna is no longer colloquially used for guns but was so used by the early Afrikaans speaking settlers or "Boers" to describe any muzzle loading long arm.
    Thanks Ian, keep em coming

Due to international arms embargo's S.A. had to produce most of it's own weapon systems. Most Apartheid era weapons were designed under a philosophy of operating independently in small units in hostile 'bush' environments and were designed to balance affordabillity and durability (with one usually triumphing over the other).

Евгений Макаров, yes, the AKM rifles hold up better in harsh conditions than the Vz 58. Other than low cost that is there only advantage. For arming the entire soviet army the AKM style of rifle makes sense. The Vz 58 is a better balanced and more compact rifle. Vz 58 rifles have better accuracy due to having better barrels and being striker fired. The biggest Advantage the Vz 58 has over the AKM is it has a last round Bolt hold open.

"Sanna" is short for Susanna, a typical girl's name in Dutch and Afrikaans. Despite our sense of humour being perceived as derogatory, the Afrikaner named their firearms after women because, like their wives, these faithful albeit temperamental weapons would not let them down in hunting or battle. "Sanna" was usually a muzzle-loaded rifle, and "Grietje" was a wheeled cannon.

With the progressive trigger of the SA series this would have been super easy to convert to an open bolt semi auto like they did. The stock is silly as they needed to revise the mounting mechanism in order to effectively make one in plastic or modified the stock to make the "swivel" piece out of metal instead. Sad they bungled the mag too/I don't remember the SA26 mags I have holding anywhere near 40 rounds. Would be intrigued on the OAL of these although they do seem longer with what I can see.

My dad had one of these Sannas for many years but traded it for a revolver a couple of years ago. Yes the stock was broken. Broken in half, between the but plate and hinge. Yes it was prune to jamming and firing doubles ocationaly. Unreliable and quite dangerous at the same time.

Forgotten Weapons isn't demonetized formally. InRange stopped monetizing their vids a ways back.

@@SlavicCelery I thought they said that both channels where demonetized.
I am just curious if Forgotten Weapons is still monetized or if TH-cam has gotten to the point where they are greedy enough to put adverts on any video.

Ghost963 they had a Soviet style ‘communist’ regime that was installed by the Soviet Union. When they tried to go for a more moderate socialist regime, the soviets intervened to prevent that and put a more loyal centralized authoritarian regime in place.

I'll go out on a limb; if this, obviously low cost handgun, was made in the USA, dealers would be able to sell box cars full.

    • @JunkCCCP

Considering Jimenez and HiPoint still exist, you can make just about any vaguely gun-shaped and semifunctional firearm and sell boxcars of them in the US
