SIL's family should buy her kid a new car since they are so concerned about her . The step family went above & beyond. I am sooooo glad that OP took the car back . 🕺💃
Each sibling and partner purchased their own children vehicles without help from other family members. Then because the brother who was the step dad to the teen and her mother could not afford any vehicle, the others chipped in to buy her a decent car with two years of insurance. The step mom and step daughter need to get a clue. The step mom contributed nothing to anyone else's car but thought everyone else should cover the cost for her daughter. Unfortunate but not everyone gets a new car. I was 50 when I happily purchased my first new car and also didn't cry when nobody purchased me a vehicle as a teen, or ever.
NTA, Nope, this right here. Don't appreciate it, I'll take it back and you'll never get shit else. If parents have issues they can DEAL with getting presents for their OWN kids and they won't get shit else either. Don't need to do for ungrateful toxic. If the kids are old enough to understand it's their parents conditioning them to feel entitled. NO NO AND NO. Shut that shit down INSTANTLY. 2ND EDIT: YEP THAT MOM IS A PSYCHOPATH setting that kid up for failure. I'm glad the truth got out but that will make any child need therapy dealing with a messy parent like her. Did no one in the comments watch until the end!?!? IMO the brother's wife is a narcissist and should be avoided at all costs. Invite brother and niece to all events, but not the wife/mother. If they can't come (for whatever reason) send them yearly invitations and greeting cards directly addressed to them excluding the wife/mother. The wife/mom has acted unforgivably and almost ripped your entire family to shreds. It is next to impossible to come back from that...especially if she is not deeply apologetic.
OMG! This is incredible! Who does that? Your family is extremely generous! The the car back and sell it immediately! Do not purchase anything for the girl of her mother again! Your sister in law’s parents and siblings can buy the girl a car! The family didn’t buy the other kids cars their parents bought their own kids a car! That Bruja can buy her own kid a car! What a nasty human

Too bad her mother didnt do the same. Scheming, lying, and manipulating, especially her daughter? Oh, heck no! Your brother KNEW about this and still allowed to to go on? NO. I dont give a flying fig it was bc he wanted to keep the peace. He ENABLED his wife, and supported her and their daughter's horrible behavior. Despicable! He was rewarding and supporting horrendous behavior so his home life was comfy for him?! Is he three?
Ii do not sympathise with any of them. Buying a brand new car for a 16 year old whether the family can afford it or not is one of the stupidest things I have ever heard of. That age is much to young to have their own car. You are giving them an enormous sense of entitlement right off the bat.
I have had family drama for years. If this is a true story, she did the right thing in selling the car. I wish someone bought me a car when I was a teen. I bought a use car when I was 18. I also put myself through college. My parents wouldn't have bought me a car or paid for my college. In a way that was the best lesson they taught me which was never rely on them financially. They actually told me if I wanted something, go out and find the money because they weren't paying for it. It taught me to problem solve and not to expect money from anyone.
This is kind of complicated because not only is this a "kid is upset for getting a present they don't like" situation, but this looks like it's a "kid has reasonable expectations for getting a specific present and getting a (slightly) lesser present instead" situation. The kid should have been told ahead of time "we can't give you a new car but we will get you a used car" ahead of time.

Disagree. If I read this right, it is the parents who get the child the car. In this case, he parents could not afford the car, and the relatives chipped in.
