I've made easily 500+ campfires in my life & unless the conditions are super perfect that pyramid thing of starting the fire @ the top will fail most times. Start @ the bottom

Best way to minimize smoke imo is to use lots of very small diameter and very dry kindling to get the fire hot fast. Quantity and quality of materials is much more important that how you arrange it all
Log cabin, or what I call the “pitfall”, is my favorite fire. Easy to get a decent sized fire going if you get enough burning material to fall to the base of the cabin after a minute or so of burning. Just stack some decent logs on without smothering your flame licks and you’ll stay warm.
The more airflow to the fire, the more efficiently it burns and the less smoke it makes. I didn't know the #2 style here was called the log cabin but I've done an off shoot of this 90% of the time. It creates a great path for air to enter at the base. Whenever I add wood, I always try to add in parallel pairs with space between them to create a flue effect. The air is why a rocket stove is so clean and efficient.
Sound fire building practices. I have also seen another version of the long burn using a similar technique that can burn for 2-3 days by packing dirt in gaps between the logs, stacking about 3' long logs 4-5 across, then the same the opposite direction and packing dirt in between for a few layers this way. Then as you did, start your fire on top and let it burn down through all layers.
Wondered how anyone's house catches fire by accident since I couldn't get a fire going on purpose. I had tried on my own for about 30 minutes and couldn't get it to catch before looking for a video and this solved it.

Using momentum to split a larger piece of wood into smaller pieces. Start in a kneeling position as seen in the video Step 1: Orient the piece of wood so the grain runs vertically Step 2: Place the hatchet/ax on the top surface of the piece of wood near the middle. Hold the ax in one hand and the wood in the other. (Refer to the video) Step 3: Raise the ax and wood 10 to 20 cm above the ground with the ax still in contact with the top surface. (This may be the most awkward step) Fingers holding the wood must be carefully placed so that the sharp edge of the ax will not move any closer to the fingers. Step 4: Sharply lower the wood to the ground while keep the ax in contact with the top surface of the wood. The stick of wood should be perpendicular to the ground. That is, a the long axis of the wood should be perpendicular to the ground. (If not, the wood may go one way and the ax another when the bottom of the wood strikes the ground, creating a dangerous situation.) Done properly, the momentum of the ax will cause it to drive into the wood. However, the ax will still not be firmly stuck in the wood and if you let go of the wood or lift the ax alone, the ax and wood will separate. (This is not the desired result.) Step 5: Repeat steps 4 & 5 a couple of times, until the ax is firmly embedded in the wood. Step 6: Let go of the wood, raise the ax/stick assembly a little higher and bring the assembly down forcefully on the ground, driving the ax deeper into the wood. Step: 7: Repeat step 6 until the wood splits, It will probably be necessary to re-aline the ax/wood axis so that when the wood strikes the ground, the force of the blow is directed along the axis. FYI: believe it or now! In Vancouver BC strike anywhere & waterproof matches & lighter fluid have all been banned. Merchants are prohibited from stocking them.
I just put 6 slipt logs and wacth it burn.for a hour then I put the big boys on and it burns for three hours straight before I have to put anymore wood on
Please don’t use water to take out a fire unless it’s an emergency, it makes it extremely difficult for others to use the fire pit after you when the pit is full of water and it takes forever to dry, I know this from first hand experience please don’t do that👍
I use the lint from my dryer. Save it and put it in either empty toilet paper cardboard cylinder or better than that paper towel empty cardboard cylinder. They work great. Very lite to carry.
Interesting. Here in utah, I have heard that they request you not bring in your own wood due to bugs and disease that could spread to the other trees. They say to use the dead fall that is at the camp site. But I can see why both ways.

hmmm... seems like she forgot to mention: type of wood, density of the wood, some wood toxic for cooking, wind factor, humidity, sry ive been camping a lot, like everyday for 2 yrs, also did 8yrs of fire prevention and trail maintenance. Awesome video though! Peace.
It was safe enough though. I agree it would've been better if she placed her hand farther from the log, but you could already see where the axe would've gone.
I cant stand people who want to see the flaimes over 6ft tall the people I'm around trows 12 big a logs on just so they can see flaimes nearly 6ft tall and they tell me that's a good fire yeah a wast of wood fire
I note you are using rather large pieces of wood that were obviously cut with a saw and are using an ax to split wood, which, in my opinion, encourages poor back-country practices. Would REI consider making a video about how to build a CAMP fire without using a saw, an ax or a knife and no more than two matches? That is my goal whenever I build a fire although I confess I do not always succeed.

Log cabin is super easy to build, lights fast and big like stated, and easy to maintain. I don't bother with any other type of fire anymore.
And it drains the wood in 20 mins 💀

Making a log cabin base is good i experimented and put a teepee over it and it worked amazing
Teepee is my favorite method. Very easy to make. Dryer lint is great too. Just keep a supply at home over time

Easier method: setting you’re tent on fire
Your tent would be a lot warmer and you wouldn't need a sleeping bag

I usually used sand instead to bury the fire, if there is either no nearby water source, or decided not to use water.

Tried third method, kindling and firestarter burns for a bit until it lights out, no real fire lasting.
